Argentina is gaining traction among IGS students. We landed there in 2015 for a site visit and found a fertile market with companies eager for English-speaking interns. One of our students graduated in hospitality management and requested a boutique hotel to learn the trade. We placed her at a coastal property where she worked directly with the owner. She quickly demonstrated her competence and was given a high level of responsibility within a week of arriving. Buenos Aires is the most popular city for our students and offers the greatest diversity of placements and things to do. Excursions include flying to nearby Peru for a glimpse of the Amazon Rainforest. And for those seeking the bottom of the world, a trip to Ushuaia is in order.

The Glacier Bay Semester offers an unparalleled opportunity for young people aged 18-24 to develop as leaders, community members, and global citizens. Based at our twin campuses, students will explore a mossy old-growth forest, paddle through icy fjords, and climb the rugged alpine summits of Glacier Bay National Park and the Tongass National Forest. The program is built around three central pillars: academic work in the liberal arts and sciences, service labor performed in support of the campus and community, and democratic self-governance. Close-knit community life and wilderness exploration round out the experience. Join us and immerse yourself in the communities and wildlands of Southeast Alaska, home to tidewater glaciers, alpine meadows, humpback whales, and brown bears. All students must be legally permitted to reside in the United States for the entire duration of the program. This means that DACA recipients are eligible for this program. Unfortunately, Tidelines cannot currently sponsor visas for international students.
A Guide to Gap Year Travel Programs
Prepare for a Gap Year
Understand the benefits
Taking a gap year for adventure travel is all about mixing exploration with personal growth. Here’s why it's such a great choice:
- Build resilience. You’ll be stepping out of your comfort zone a lot, which is a fast track to building confidence, independence, and the kind of resilience that only comes from real-life adventures.
- Embrace new cultures. Go beyond being a tourist. Adventure travel lets you connect with locals and really immerse yourself in new communities—you get a taste of life as a local!
- Gain practical skills. From outdoor survival to teamwork (and maybe even picking up a new language!), you’ll come home with a backpack full of new skills you’ll actually use.
Things to know
If you’re considering an adventure travel gap year, a little planning goes a long way. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Budget wisely. Make sure to plan for all the costs—program fees, travel, and daily expenses. It’s way easier to enjoy the experience when your finances are sorted.
- Safety first. Look into local health and safety guidelines. Knowing what to expect will help you feel more confident and prepared.
- Respect local culture. Take time to learn about cultural norms where you’re going. Respecting local traditions and ways of life makes your experience richer and builds great relationships.
Stay flexible. Let’s be real—adventure travel doesn’t always go exactly as planned. Embrace the unexpected and stay adaptable; it’s all part of the journey!
