- Start with a passion. Are you drawn to adventure, meaningful goals, or cultural exchange? Let your interests guide your path.
- Mix structure with spontaneity. Schedule your core activities but leave room for exploration, side trips, and unplanned moments.
- Live with locals. A homestay offers complete cultural immersion and keeps your Spanish skills sharp daily.
- Be open to challenge. Peru’s pace, customs, and infrastructure can differ—go with the flow and embrace the growth.

Things to know
Peru is a safe, vibrant, and life-changing destination, but it helps to arrive prepared. Consider some of the must-know tips before you go.

- Visas are required. Check the latest rules through the Peruvian consulate and apply early to avoid delays.
- Expect basic infrastructure. The internet may be limited in remote areas, so download what you need in advance.

7 weeks I will never forget!
May 29, 2026by: Charlie Mackenzie - EnglandProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
This was the teip of a lifetime. The other people in my group were from all over the world, yet we bonded almost imeadiately. Even though the activities, treks and itinerary were all fantastic, the 7 weeks was made unforgetable by the people. Collin, the group leader, was also extremely kind, funny and energetic the whole trip. He gave the group support whilst giving us the freedom to tailor the trip to our preferences, spend time alone or do other activities which we all really apreciated. This trip not only keeps you very engaged with the nature and culture of South America but also physically active aswell. You will be challenged mentally and physically at some point of the trip in the best way possible. I would highly recomend for any gap year students looking to get out of their comfort zones and meet new people. I am truly bonded for life with my group and will never forget the time we shared together.

Gap Year in Peru
May 16, 2026by: Sven Wannenwetsch - GermanyI did a 8 month long gap year in Peru with Maximo Nivel doing various voluntary works. Each one of them was truly amazing, organized by great people and unbelievable hospitality. Special shoutout goes to Fanny, my homestay for all of my time here. She really made us part of her family and shared the Peruvian culture to us. The working staff at the Maximo Office are also super supportive and trying to max your experience the country (shoutout to Lucas!). I would recommend this organization to anyone.
Had an Amazing Time in Cusco, Peru
January 22, 2026by: Tobin Walker - United StatesI have lived in Cusco, Peru, for the past 4 months while participating in the Gap Year program with Maximo Nivel. I have already had so many amazing experiences in my time here. I worked at a local zoo for my first month, which gave me exposure to some of the coolest animals in South America, up close. I worked at a travel agency, where I appeared in Instagram videos promoting travel packages and was driven to the coolest travel spots in and around Cusco while doing so. Now, I am working at a specialty coffee cafe, where I am learning a lot and gaining incredibly valuable experience in Social Media, Marketing, and Logistics. With the advice and help of Maximo Nivel, I have explored the most amazing locations in the greater Cusco area. My host family has been incredibly kind and welcoming; it really feels like a new family away from home. The other volunteers in the program are always very nice and super interesting. Cusco itself is beautiful and very fun with an active nightlife. I can't wait to see what the rest of my time holds for me here as I cross my halfway mark. Travel with Maximo Nivel!

November 19, 2025by: Greta TodProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
I had an amazing time on my gap semester. I learned so much and loved pushing past my comfort zone in activities, trying new things, and bonding with the group. I not only grew as a person but created lasting memories and connections.
Not a walk in the park but it's a program that I would recommend for someone who genuinely wants to be challenged
November 19, 2025by: Kaden SmeenkProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
Rager of a program. I found myself struggling, thinking, and then growing constantly. It's not a walk in the park but it's a program that I would recommend for someone who genuinely wants to be challenged in order to be molded into a better version of themselves.
Achieved lots more
November 19, 2025by: Anouk SethiProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
The two and a half months I spent in Peru and Ecuador flew by, and I still can’t believe everything we did. I came in hoping to improve my Spanish, but I achieved lots more. I overcame my fear of heights, learned practical life skills (like plunging a toilet), formed a close group bond, became a stronger hiker, and so much else.
Amazing Gap Year Experience
November 07, 2025by: Abigail Bishop - United StatesProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
Doing the South America Explorer trip was one of the best decisions i’ve made in my life! I got to experience some amazing things, like spending so much time in a foreign country, volunteering with animals for over a week which has been a longtime dream of mine, and trekking in the jungle seeing amazing landscapes!! I think my favorite activities were the white water rafting, walks around cusco, the spanish school and the chance to play fútbol at a local venue. Gaz was an amazing leader and made things fun and adventurous the entire time. I felt so lucky to have such an amazing and knowledagable leader and great group of people to travel with!! I would recommend this trip to anyone in a heartbeat. Even the harder things we did, pushed me to do things out of my comfort zone and I am so glad to have had the opportunity to experience all that we did

Definitely one of my favourite trips!
November 07, 2025by: Imogen Holliday - AustraliaProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
I really enjoyed this trip! I loved the Salkantay trek as well as the other hikes we did as it felt very accomplishing and also found it to be a really beneficial way to connect with the group. The volunteering at the animal rescue centre was definitely a highlight as it was a unique experience that I’m very grateful I got to interact with such amazing animals I would have never seen otherwise. Overall I really loved the trip and would say our guide had really made the trip as well. He really helped to me to make the most of the opportunities and I think really brought the group together.
5-star South America Explorer
November 07, 2025by: Molly McEvoy - United KingdomProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
I absolutely loved the South America Explorer trip organised by Gapforce! All the activities, food and accommodations were amazing - personal highlights include the Salkantay trek and the volunteering at the animal rescue centre. My leader, Gaz, was also incredible, from his organisational skills to his insane jungle knowledge! I would thoroughly recommend this trip for anyone who wants to explore Peru and Ecuador whilst getting to know others and visiting places off the traditional tourist trail. It also offers a combination of pre-departure support and support during the trip as well as a a certain level of independence. Overall, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am so grateful to Gapforce for allowing me to experience this and create special memories!

100% recommend: best 7 weeks in South America
November 06, 2025by: Ashton Kay - United KingdomProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
It has been an amazing trip. I have had the best time, and enjoyed all of it. There have been such a wide range of activities, so I've not gotten bored at all, and the timings of staying at each place have been really good. Everything is organised really well, it seems really smooth, and the leader was above my expectation: a really nice, friendly man, who was also very experienced with what he does. Volunteering at the animal sanctuary was my favourite part of the trip, it was an insane experience, doing things you won't do again, such as being so close to all the animals. The trip exceeded my expectations so much, and those who came on the trip as well were so nice and friendly. The trip included so many things I wouldn't think to do if I booked my own trip, making it really good. I have had such a good time, and 100% recommend people to go on it. I will remember this forever.
Amazing!
May 21, 2025by: Clo Debray - United KingdomProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
Peru and Ecuador are now my absolute favourite countries, the salkantay trek was breathtaking and truly a one in a lifetime experience that you have to see- the best five days of my life. Met loads of amazing like minded people too, friends for life for sure!!

Coolest 7 weeks of my life
May 21, 2025by: Connor Mackenzie - United KingdomProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
I had never been to South America before this programme, and now I feel I have thoroughly experienced what the continent has to offer. The Salkantay trek was probably the most insane 5 days of my life. Other highlights include getting to know my peers in Cuzco, and the plethora of outdoor activities in Baños.

Life changing experience
November 28, 2024by: Callum BuchananProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
I was nervous about the decision to take a gap year. Pacific Discovery facilitated a life changing experience that not only made me a better person but connected me with life long friends. I’ll recommend this program to anyone who will listen.
The opportunities and emphasis on the 'discovery' aspect of the program
November 19, 2024by: Peter GrumanProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
Pacific Discovery was recommended to us by parents of a PD alumni (Aus/NZ) and it made a huge difference to us in our review of alternative programs. The points highlighted by the parents that appealed to us centered around personal growth, world/cultural/travel experience, great planning, and excellent guides; our student's experience was terrific in all these aspects, and we so appreciate the guidance he received during the program to help contextualize all of the amazing and mundane experiences he had on the progam. The opportunities and emphasis on the 'discovery' aspect of the program particularly for his individual development, was, for us, the main reason for selecting PD, and we couldn't be more pleased with how that purpose was achieved.
An experience of a lifetime!
November 16, 2024by: Allie Gladen - United StatesProgram: Country Jumper Gap Year - Costa Rica | Guatemala | Peru
My time in Costa Rica with Maximo Nivel was definitely one that I will cherish and hold near and dear to my heart for forever. There were so many amazing people to meet and so many amazing experiences to be had. My host mom, Marisol was an amazing host and made us all feel very comfortable and happy, all while keeping a fun and lighthearted atmosphere in the house. The campus in Quepos, Costa Rica is very comfortable and well made and I enjoyed spending time there as well!
The spontaneous discoveries the group was making
November 12, 2024by: Diana GrumanProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
We loved the communication between Pacific Discovery and parents. The portal offered detailed information and forms prior to the trip. During the trip, the weekly summaries gave us a window into the activities and the spontaneous discoveries the group was making in their towns, service sites, and local hosts.
I feel like I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot about myself from stepping out of my comfort zone.
November 03, 2024by: Gemma ColeProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
The South America Gap Semester pushed me out of my comfort zone both mentally, physically, and socially. Pushing my body beyond what I thought it could do, opening up to - and being vulnerable with- a new group of people, and communicating in a different language in a place so vastly different than I’m used to, were all challenging and rewarding experiences. I feel like I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot about myself from stepping out of my comfort zone and opening myself up to new opportunities and possibilities.
Very fun
October 18, 2024by: Sawyer Hartman - United StatesProgram: Country Jumper Gap Year - Costa Rica | Guatemala | Peru
I had a very nice time here in Costa Rica, my family was very nice and ever was welcoming to me. Both of my projects were fun and I have learned a lot since being here! I am exciting for my trips to Guatemala and Peru
