My daughter came back a different person

May 09, 2026by: Freja Lauridsen - Denmark

Program: Teen China Program: Learn Chinese, Homestay & Summer Camp

My 15-year-old daughter spent 6 weeks in Beijing with GAC's high school program. I was nervous at first, but the coordinators sent updates and photos regularly. Her homestay family treated her like their own child – even celebrated her birthday with a traditional cake. She went from knowing zero Mandarin to ordering food, taking taxis, and even helping me translate during a video call. The weekend trips to the Great Wall and Forbidden City were unforgettable for her. She came home more confident, independent, and mature. Thank you, GAC – we're already planning her next trip.

My 16-year-old son spent 6 weeks in Beijing with GAC's high school program. We were nervous sending him alone, but the homestay family treated him like their own child. He studied Mandarin in the mornings and went on cultural tours in the afternoons — the Great Wall, Summer Palace, and even a visit to a local high school. He came home speaking more Chinese than after two years of classes here, and with a second family in China. The 24/7 supervision gave us total peace of mind. Highly recommend for any teen wanting a real cultural experience.

Best summer of my life

I'm 19 and this was my first time traveling without my parents. Honestly, I was nervous, but the coordinators made everything feel safe and fun. My homestay mum taught me how to make dumplings, and my host brother taught me to play basketball. Classes were actually interesting — my teacher made learning Mandarin feel like a game. Made friends from all over the world. I'm already planning to go back for a full gap year after graduation. I learned more, experienced more and was way more more different than i have heard about China.
