This program is designed for applicants aged 18-28 who want to live in China, study Mandarin, experience local family life, and share their language and culture with children in a warm home environment. Yohoo has operated inbound China au pair and cultural exchange programs for more than 10 years. We support participants with host family matching, Mandarin study arrangements, visa guidance, arrival support, cultural activities, local life guidance, and ongoing coordination throughout the stay. Participants usually receive host family accommodation, meals, monthly pocket money, Mandarin classes, insurance, airport or train station pick-up, and local support. Host family cities include Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Chengdu, and Qingdao, subject to family availability and mutual matching.

July 01, 2026by: Anonymous Anonymous - ItalyMy experience in Guangzhou was amazing thanks to my host family, surely not thanks to the agency, especially after getting to China, the agent following me was not interested in me and disrespectful. I was forced to anticipate my flight two days before my expected departure, not even a little bit of empathy or understanding, she was just forcing me to make a decision quickly, furthermore on the day of my departure and the following days, no one asked me about how the flight was, if I was home safe, she just texted me on the morning of the flight, no good morning or greetings, just telling me “don’t miss the flight”. Quite disappointing approach.

What's it like to be an au pair in China versus other countries?
In most countries, au pair activities revolve around childcare tasks and housekeeping related to the children. In China, au pairs are expected to accompany kids to and from school and tutor them in English. Very light housework is involved, as families usually have nannies and housekeepers. Au pairs are expected to act as role models for children and teach them English, foreign cultures, and manners useful in daily living.
What's the cost of living in China?
Generally, a single meal costs around RMB 18-40 yuan, a bottle of water is 2-4 yuan, and toothpaste is about 10-20 yuan. Expenses like haircuts, clothes, books, and even shopping online are considerably cheaper, so living in China isn’t too expensive. On the other hand, you may have to spend more on drinks in bars, imported fruits, skincare products, and Western and Japanese restaurants.
How does Chinese public transportation work?
Taking an e-bike, bus, metro, or taxi in most major cities is common and convenient. E-bikes are everywhere in China, on nearly every corner and street, for a low cost of 1 yuan per hour. The bus and metro usually cost 1-5 yuan for a single trip. Taxis cost 12-45 yuan within the city center area. Taking a train to nearby cities is cheap and fast, with China boasting the world’s fastest train—Shanghai Maglev.
