A Guide to TV and Media Production Degrees Abroad
Why Earn Your Degree Abroad
Pursuing your TV & media production degree abroad can undeniably be a daunting prospect. You will be leaving the comforts of home to explore the unfamiliar, immersing yourself in an entirely new academic and cultural context. Yet by doing so you will find that, in a profession which is largely centered around communication, the skills and knowledge you gain by earning a TV and media production degree abroad will bring you to entirely new heights; both personally and as a budding professional in the field.
Locations
Most international students choose to pursue their TV and media production degree abroad in countries where the media industry has a global reputation for success and high quality production. For example countries such as the United States, Australia, and England are all exceedingly popular destinations; both because of the prestige of their television and media industries, and the stellar reputations that their institutes of higher education enjoy on the global stage.
Other countries that are popular destinations where to earn your TV and media production degree abroad include Argentina, France, Germany, and China. By pursuing your degree abroad in a non-English speaking country you will be challenging yourself to become fluent in a second language, a skill-set that can help you greatly down the line during your career in television and media. The flipside is that you will have to know enough of the local language at the outset to understand what your professors are talking about!
TV and media production is a fairly specialized degree track, so do not expect every foreign university you research to offer a program in the field. Many programs are also located at smaller film or arts schools. Browse the programs listed on this page to get an idea of the many different types of programs through which it is possible to earn your degree abroad in TV and media production.
Academics & Degrees
TV and media production requires a wide range of skills encompassing every aspect of the production process. Earning your TV and media production degree abroad therefore will generally require you take take a diversity of courses that cover film, audio, design, editing, script development, and other aspects of communications and technical production. Students of TV and media production may also be required to pass their host university’s basic requirements and/or take a set of additional general education courses while earning their degree abroad.
TV and media production degrees abroad are conferred at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Undergraduate programs generally last for three or four years and will require you to take many basic courses introducing you to the fundamental concepts of the industry. Graduate programs (usually issuing a Master’s degree) last for one or two years and will give you the opportunity to specialize in an area of interest while gaining further work experience through research or an internship.
While the technical knowledge behind TV and media production remains largely a constant from country to country, cultural norms can also play a large role in determining the role of media in society. This means that the location of your TV and media degree abroad program may significantly affect the content of your education; something to remain steadily aware of while looking for the perfect program!
Benefits & Challenges
Communication Skills. TV and media production centers around communicating a message to an audience. Earning your degree abroad in the field will challenge you to develop greater communication skills both in and outside the classroom on a daily basis.
International Experience. It is no secret that television and media is becoming an increasingly global industry; get a valuable head start by breaking the mold with a degree abroad.
Expanding Perspective. As you prepare yourself for a career in TV and media production, entering yourself into a global mindset by earning your degree abroad will help bring you (and your future audiences) toward a more all-encompassing perspective.

Studying my bachelor's in Beijing was the best decision
June 16, 2026by: Nina Koskinen - FinlandProgram: Bachelor's & Master's Degrees in China | Apply with GAC
I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.

May 31, 2016by: Brittany - EnglandProgram: Degree Programs at the University of Westminster, London
I enjoyed my time at Westminster University. I studied in the post-graduate course Media, Campaigning and Social Change. This course exceeded my expectations. It covered everything listed on the information site plus so much more. University of Westminster is very diverse and I always met so many people from all over, studying various and interesting topics. The academic staff are very professional and know their topics well. The foundation of learning at UW is based in critical thinking. I loved how I was allowed to express my own opinions, hear others and learn from them and also and analyse an idea from all angles. I would recommend this university and this course.
