Anthropology Degrees Abroad

Anthropology is the study of just about everything that has to do with humans. Students who have a strong inclination toward both the sciences and the humanities will find the perfect medium in this highly interdisciplinary field, which encompasses elements of biology, sociology, archaeology, psychology, and about a dozen more “ologies”. Earning your anthropology degree abroad will give you real insight into our human condition, and start you well on your way to success in this globally oriented field.

Why Earn A Degree Abroad

In order to develop a strong fundamental understanding of anthropological studies, traveling the world and experiencing life within different cultures is a vital step to take. Earning your anthropology degree abroad at a foreign university will force you to adapt and acclimate to life in ways which will never cease to challenge, reward, and surprise you. Along the way you will come to understand the underlying biological sameness as well as the manifested cultural differences which make humankind such a unique and fascinating species, which will inevitably propel your interest in the field.

While much of anthropological research takes place within primitive cultures and de-industrialized societies, the best place to earn a full degree abroad is typically at a larger university with the literary and scientific resources to supplement your education. Undoubtedly you will get to participate in fieldwork at some point in your anthropology academic career, but for now lets focus on some of the regions of the world where it will be most fruitful to pursue an academic degree in anthropology abroad.

As an English speaker, most of the best anthropology degree programs you can enroll in are located in the United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia. Schools such as Harvard, Cambridge, University of Toronto, and University of Melbourne are the cream of the crop for anthropology degrees abroad, but also extremely competitive to get into. Luckily most other major schools in these countries offer anthropology degree programs too, so your options are quite deep.

If you want to earn your degree in a non-English speaking country then good for you, this will be an immensely rewarding cultural experience and surely enhance your anthropological perspective. The major challenge however is that you will have to learn the local language well enough to understand what your teacher is saying in class. Countries such as France, Germany, Japan, and China have many prestigious universities where you can earn an anthropology degree abroad, but generally you can expect that classes will be taught in the local language.

Anthropology Degree Programs

Anthropology students should consider earning their bachelors, masters, or Ph.D. abroad, or all of the above! Typically undergraduate anthropology degree programs last three to four years, graduate programs last two years, and doctorate programs last three to six years. While anthropology is a fairly popular field of study, not all universities offer each level of the degree, so your options of where to earn your degree abroad may become more limited the further you advance in your studies.

Research is a major part of anthropology, so it is likely that at whatever level you will have the opportunity to specialize and bring your studies out into the field. Examples of areas you can specialize in include sociocultural anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeological anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. Further, within each subfield there are many more manifestations of human activity, such as art, religion, and economics, where you can place your focus. The options are endless!

Students of all levels might also be expected to complete a thesis as part of their track toward a degree in anthropology. Undergraduates will typically be expected to complete general courses in related fields, such as geography, biology, and sociology too.

Live in the Field. While earning a degree in anthropology abroad, it is possible to treat every moment as a learning moment. Among other things, anthropology is a discipline which focuses on how different cultures come to be, and by living in a foreign context you will literally spend every day in the field experiencing these things firsthand.

Challenge Your Perceptions. It is easy to come to a comfortable notion of the human condition by remaining at home and attending a local university. However, anthropology requires a greater degree of broad-mindedness, and by earning your anthropology degree abroad your scope of the field will expand and sharpen immensely.

Get a Head Start. Anthropological research is global by nature, because it deals with the human species as a whole. By earning your degree abroad in anthropology you will start to make connections all over the world and plant the seeds for a successful career in the field on an international level.
