The Real Uganda's volunteers assist our partners with a variety of empowering community-based activities. Volunteers split their time between these locally requested interventions: Public health and clinical work: Volunteers work in rural clinics providing testing, treatment, counseling services, and prevention education. Nutrition, vegetable gardening, and community sanitation programs are also ongoing. We aim to support rural public health in Uganda. Teaching and childcare: Volunteers work in rural classrooms, choosing what ages and topics to teach. Art and sport are the most popular. Traditional teaching in Uganda is rote learning and memorization. We aim to encourage teamwork, fun, creativity, literacy, and general knowledge in primary schools. Organic farming: Volunteers work alongside women and community members to maintain gardens. Depending on the season, volunteers prepare the soil, plant seeds, spread mulch, weed, harvest, and chase birds and other pests. Learn from Ugandan farmers, and share your ideas as well. We aim to teach efficient land use, organic pest control, and nutrition.

Volunteers play a crucial role in this program, delivering vital services to address the challenges facing drug users and the community in Diani Beach. They work alongside a local team of volunteers running a drug awareness community center, which carries out daily outreach walks in areas where drug users are known to spend time. This project is not for the faint of heart; it requires a high level of maturity and strength. Volunteers are desperately needed to help keep users and non-users safe, raise drug awareness, and assist with other program initiatives. Our international participants must be aware that they will work hands-on with users of hard drugs and WILL witness people injecting drugs during the daily outreach walks. Thus, a strict minimum age of 21 is necessary to join this program. Volunteers do not need a medical background, though nurses, doctors, and pre-med students are welcome.

Lima, the capital of Peru, is located on the west coast of the Pacific along the Rímac River. This large, international city balances both modern and traditional influences, which evolved from Peru's history as the home of the Inca and numerous other civilized cultures dating back as far as 2000 BC. Opportunities vary from rehabilitating marine life to working with disabled or at-risk youth to creating environmental protection campaigns. By partnering with community-based organizations and following a structured, reflection-based curriculum, you will learn how local experts address these issues with available resources while developing intercultural and leadership skills in a real-world context. Each of our community-based organizations is unique, so visit our website to learn more about your options. Although all our programs are great, we especially recommend Lima for students who are interested in marine biology or human rights.

A Guide to Volunteering Abroad in Gender Issues
Why Volunteer Abroad
Gender inequality is has been around for generations, in every culture across the globe. While progress has been made over the years, inequality tends to manifest itself in new ways, creating the need for further advocacy and societal change. Although gender injustice tends to primarily affect women, the issues faced by men and children should not be forgotten either. Poverty, violence, and illiteracy are just a few of the continual worldwide struggles that make gender issues even more complicated and in need of attention.
Volunteers can give their time to educate and empower marginalized groups (namely women) and ultimately combat gender inequality across the world. While there is a great deal of need among individuals experiencing specific unequal treatment, there is a greater need to challenge and encourage the world at large to implement the necessary changes. Change can not be made through passivity; it is passion, dedication, and service that can create the ripple effect needed to solve gender issues abroad.
