Get the chance to work with injured animals from the Amazon rainforest or at a shelter for sea turtles in one of our internships abroad. At the Institute for Global Studies, we help students gain invaluable work experience in their field from an international context. Wildlife shelter work can bring out the best of human nature. Connecting with abandoned animals instills a sense of accomplishment that few tasks provide. Apart from bonding with animals, gain insight into local communities and their interactions with wildlife in their area. Meet with students, residents, and the general public to learn about their customs. Common duties include food preparation, checking in animals, interpretation to the public, medical assistance, and community outreach.

Volunteer at an Elephant Camp in Thailand. You will work in a camp located about 40 miles from Chiang Mai. The area has a stream dividing it in the middle and is surrounded by mountains. Volunteers work alongside and assist elephant trainers and staff, working from Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 5:00 pm. The Camp has been open for 20 years, has over 70 elephants and roughly 250 workers. Many of the workers are of minority, ethnic, hill tribe decent. The camp has many day visitors. Once a volunteer has spent a decent amount of time at the Camp, the volunteer may be asked to help present the different safety precautions the Camp has for its day visitors. Before working directly with the elephants, all volunteers will go through a three day safety course at the Camp. During those three days, volunteers may take part in some of the teaching and other roles that they may be involved with later. Elephants are gentle creatures, but are incredibly big and strong. Safety is of the utmost importance, to insure nobody gets hurt during their volunteer service.

The internship program offered by the KS Elephant Sanctuary is a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about animal welfare and conservation to gain hands-on experience in a dedicated elephant sanctuary located in Thailand. This immersive program allows interns to make a meaningful impact while learning about the complex and fascinating world of elephants. At KS Elephant Sanctuary, we offer two internship programs: one focused on elephant research and the other on photography. These internships are available year-round, but availability is subject to capacity constraints. Interns in the Elephant Research program work from Monday to Friday, allowing them to enjoy their weekends for personal exploration. Interns hike in the mornings to observe elephants, assist visitors, and collect data. Afternoons involve data entry, project work, and occasional presentations on elephant research and conservation. As a photography intern, your days will encompass a variety of activities, including hiking with the elephants to capture high-resolution photos for our social media, as well as occasional visits to the school or village to document community-related shots.
