A Guide to Interning Abroad in Phuket
Internships Abroad in Phuket
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and one of the most desirable travel destinations in the country. It not only has a flourishing tourism scene, it is also a great location to develop skills for your future career. With internships in Phuket available in a range of fields, it is a prime location for those who want to further their portfolio while literally soaking up the sun.
Tourism. It is no secret that Thailand thrives off of the tourism industry, and Phuket is home to some of the most sought after beach destinations in the country. From hotel management and hospitality to ecotourism, Phuket is a great place to intern abroad if you want experience in the travel industry. Direct field experience from tourism internships in Phuket will provide you with irreplaceable professional skills as well as a clearer picture of the field. Tourism internship placements can range from working at luxury resorts to leading travel tours.
Marine Research. Why enjoy the wonders of Thailand after work when it can be a part of your everyday job? By interning abroad in marine research, you can become a certified diver while exploring one of the most desirable diving locations in the world. From assisting on dive excursions to conducting reef surveys or helping out at local dive shops, getting involved in the marine life of Phuket offers a wide variety of opportunities. Marine conservation internships in Phuket will also make for some especially beautiful memories too.
Real Estate. Internships in Phuket with real estate providers (such as internationally renowned real estate groups) are another great option. By learning new marketing techniques, training to be a real estate agent, fostering global relationships, and developing key skills, you can advance your knowledge of the field and the international real estate market. Interns may even have the chance to work under one of the largest real estate networks in the world all while living in the stunning city of Phuket.
Life in Phuket
Phuket is the essence of a beachfront lifestyle for internships abroad. Not only does it have great opportunities in a number of fields, but it also houses some spectacular scenery that interns can enjoy on their time off. Whether you choose to relax at the beach, go diving in the Andaman Sea, or go out in Patong (the main town on the island), Phuket is an incredible place for internships abroad in Thailand, and possibly an even nicer place to explore. While daily life for interns will vary based on the specific internship placement, interns can expect to work four to five days a week.
Relationships in the workplace are of high value in Thailand and it is considered impolite to conduct business before interacting with colleagues on a more personal level. While it is important, as a professional, to be punctual, time is much more fluid in Phuket. However, clothing choices should be conservative, especially in business placements, but some positions may be more casual or informal. Body language is also very important in the workplace, and it is vital that you always show respect for your boss and fellow co-workers.
Salary & Costs
Many internships in Phuket will not provide specific monetary compensation for their work. However, there are many other significant areas of compensation offered. Most internship programs will provide meals and a small stipend in overall program costs. On top of this, interns should plan on bringing a small sum of money to allow for beachside activities and flexibility. Life on the beach is slightly more expensive than in the inland cities.
Thailand is known as an affordable place to intern abroad. The average meal in Phuket will range from $2 to $6, and souvenirs can be found from $5 to $10. Lavish services can be purchased in higher price ranges. Yet, if you want to live as the locals do, you can eat, work, and participate in activities within a reasonable budget.
Accommodations & Visas
Most internships in Phuket will include accommodation, but each intern will be provided with various types of housing options. Homestays are the most common housing arrangement, because it allows interns to dive into the culture, eat the most authentic food, and develop language skills. Dormitory style living is another standard housing type offered to international interns in Phuket. If you’re responsible for arranging your own housing, be sure to ask your internship provider for help to ensure you have safe and reliable accommodations.
Visas are required for most individuals to intern in Phuket. Most organizations will help interns through this process, but make sure that everything is submitted at least three months before departure. Once you’re in and interning in Thailand, the government will require you to obtain a work visa and a work permit. While the visa will be processed through the embassy in your home country, the government issues the work permit upon arrival. Work these fees into your budget as many programs do not cover these expenses. Visa requirements change frequently in Thailand, so make sure to research what is needed when you start your visa application process.
GoAbroad Insider Tips
Island Internship. The most prevalent benefit is the ability to intern in one of the most beautiful waterfront regions in the world! You will have the opportunity to further your skill set while living in one of the most beloved tourist destinations in all of Southeast Asia.
Peaceful Phuket. Thai natives are notably peaceful and avoid violence, making Phuket a considerably safe destination to intern. Practice caution when in areas largely concentrated by tourists, in order to assure safety. For the most part, petty theft is the most common form of crime foreigners should keep in mind.
Thai Terminology. Many interns coming to Phuket will not have prior knowledge of the Thai language. Some interns may feel distanced from the native people because of the language barrier. Luckily, the tourism boom in Phuket means English is more readily spoken and locals are kind and willing to go out of their way to help you.

Teaches you how to be a GREAT Divemaster
January 28, 2025by: Scarlett Taylor - CanadaDid the Divemaster Internship with Robert and Ulysse and then stayed on and worked for Merlin as a DM for 10 months after. Clearly, I must have liked it. Robert can be a tough boss, but he has a heart of gold, and he gave me a great experience of what it was like to work in the diving industry. You're not required to spend any time in the shop selling fun dives or courses, or filling tanks or other grunt work, you are just there to learn how to be a great DM and you will get tons of experience guiding customers through the internship. Big shoutout to Instructor Ulysse. They say that the only thing that matters when choosing where to do a course is the instructor, and man, I lucked out. He is the most capable and thorough instructor I have ever met and I would trust him with my life 100 times over. Miss you guys already!

So much learning
February 24, 2021by: Pamela S - United KingdomChildren and women are being exposed to so many risks, like emotional, psychological, sexual, and physical abuses. While society are doing its best to address these issues, there are still a handful of cases left unheard and unresolved. In my internship, I was tasked to answer hotline calls from abused women and children, interact in their therapy sessions, and even organize parties for the children in the shelter. These kids are so adorable and I could not bear the fact that some people are finding it easy to resent them. At the outset, before we started our internships, we are trained by licensed guidance counselors and psychologists and told us what to and not to do. I learned a lot.
An honor to be chosen as an intern
February 24, 2021by: Leanna U - UgandaIndeed, domestic violence poses serious threats to women and their children. I have witnessed it first hand in my own home, and I regret every second of it. When I was presented with the chance to work with women and children in their care shelters, I was ecstatic. Even told it to my mom and she was very supportive. Internships like these are rare, and being chosen as an intern here is an honor for me. Happy to do it with IGS! :)
Fulfilling
February 24, 2021by: Jordyn T - United StatesAs a policy student, I really am very interested with this internship. When my classmate told me her experience with IGS, I did not hesitate and applied. Good thing, IGS's courses are available the whole year, so I was able to find an internship suitable to my needs and preferences. I got to experience 3 weeks of fulfilling and rewarding internship, and actually make a difference on others' lives.
Sepanx is real
February 16, 2021by: Alixia L - MyanmarSepanx is real! (separation anxiety) I gained so many charming friends in my internship in USA! My workmates are adorable people. As to the job duties, we did leisure travel arrangements, cruises, tours, independent packages, corporate travel-related sales. We also arranged their service - air, car, hotel reservations. I got to try a lot of hotels (for free!) because we "develop incoming leads and turn them into bookings". They also told me that I have potential to become a full-time consultant after the internship period. I am thrilled!
Got new set of mothers and sisters
February 16, 2021by: Tyra F - United StatesI really love traveling. They say that when you do something you love, you won't have to work a day in your life. So this is my first step to being a travel consultant. The firm I was assigned to is very hospitable - was welcomed by an all-female staff, which made me really comfortable. They are like sisters and mothers to me. I got particularly close to Jessica, my partner in our Japan project, and to Ms. Lilia, who is my boss in one of our arrangement/ deal with a rude customer! They are so nice even if some customers are so rude, that's why I really admire them. It was grace under pressure, in the most literal sense!
Knowing the ins and outs of travel consultancy
February 16, 2021by: Pedro Gonzales - MexicoWorking for a travel consultancy firm made me realize how interesting this field is for me. I talked to clients, created itineraries, did research on fares, and communicated with a lot of people. When I said phone calls are main part of my job duties, I ain't lying. But the fact that I learned about the operations (ins and outs) of travel consultancy is very significant to me. Very valuable, since I plan to open a travel consultancy firm in the near future!
Working for an art gallery is my dream!
February 16, 2021by: Jeraldine Ong - ChinaWorking for an art gallery is my dream! And to do it in Paris is way beyond my expectations. Everyday, there are prepared different units of the gallery. And everyday there are some seemingly daunting tasks. But I am glad that my supervisors are mentoring me all throughout the process. I also did some research, printed some captions, worked with the marketing and creatives team. This internship gave me my dream and I would always cherish it. <3 I would like to give my sincerest thanks to the IGS group for this amazing adventure. Your programme opened doors for me to meet a lot of people and travelled different places.
Different gallery set ups everyday
February 16, 2021by: Dana Farhad - IranIGS gave me a position in a medium-sized museum and I loved everything about it. I super like that it's not too big to be filled with so much people, as it trigers my social anxiety. I love also that it isn't too small to not do anything. i was trained in how to communicate with visitors, and was oriented on the history of the majestic pieces of art. Thankj you very much, IGS!
Good times
February 16, 2021by: Jomar Obien - IndonesiaHappy to have good times with my co-interns. happy to bond with them and visit tourist destinations on Saturdays and Sundays and on days when there are not much work in office. happy because this internship is really organized
Gear preparations, reef surveys
February 15, 2021by: Christine Margareth S - American SamoaMy major is actually Journalism, but the diving world really draws my attention that much. So, I took the plunge and tried this IGS internship program. What we did everyday was preparing gear for dives, conducting reef surveys and even website management to highlight threats to reef systems. My journ experience was also used, as I have created contents for the shop's website, also some SEO stuff, and some copywriting. Staff are always smiling, and Hawaii is extremely beautiful. How I wish I could spend eternity there.
Insane experience
February 15, 2021by: Andrei K - AustraliaIn general, a Divemaster course will take on average anywhere between 6 weeks - 6 months to complete. Here, it took me 3.5 months. :) On mornings and afternoons, we assist visitors in their tours, coordinated with the other staff, did researches in the back office, and even did some marketing stuff when there are just few visitors. On days when no visitors are around, they teach me towards my PADI certification goal and really made time to orient me. Grateful for this beautiful opportunity. Serving dual purpose - enjoying and learning in the internship... also getting a certification. Insane.
Cebu is beautiful!
February 15, 2021by: Jordin S - United StatesGot the chance to work with local and foreign staff in Cebu, Philippines. Working in the dive shop got me an opportunity to meet diff kinds of people, so I get to learn their language also. Good thing Cebuanos are very fluent in English, I had no difficulty in understanding them. Among the many tourist destinations I went to, I think that taoist temple, tops lookout, and the whaleshark spotting are my top favorite adventures.
Wide range of housing options, amenities, good cost of living
January 07, 2021by: Jameson Peters - United StatesI thought that living in Australia for this aquaculture internship would cost me so much. Glad to be proved wrong. I liked that there is a wide range of housing options, provided to me by Dr. Adams. The hotel has so many amenities too. I enjoy that it also has a pool for tenants and that they have nice showers. As to cost of living, it's fantastic. My college savings aren't totally used up. Good internship, over all.
Truly an amazing internship
January 07, 2021by: An Dung - VietnamEver since I was a kid, I really have this burning passion for the environment and marine ecosystem, so when my mom knew about this internship she really took the time to message the IGS staff to accommodate me. luckily I passed the standards and screening of IGS and they assisted me in every way possible. i am grateful because I got to see hawaii in person and got to visit Haleakala National Park and the Waikiki beach. truly an amazing internship for me!
