A Guide to Volunteering Abroad in Salamanca
Popular Ways to Volunteer Abroad in Salamanca
Salamanca is known as Castilla’s liveliest city, home to a massive Spanish and international student population. Not only does the university atmosphere contribute to the constant vibrancy of the city, but it also means the educated-oriented society happily welcomes volunteers to teach the community. Volunteers abroad in Salamanca will have endless opportunities in the education field and beyond, while eating tapas along the way.
Popular causes in Salamanca. In a city buzzing with students, education is key. For this reason, teaching is the most popular placement option for those volunteering abroad in Salamanca. With recent economic crises in Spain, locals constantly seek to improve their English in order to gain new job prospects, and teaching English is the most sought after placement type. Volunteers can get involved in other ways, too, running tutoring programs for disadvantaged youth, organizing arts and empowerment classes, assisting in childcare, or even giving public health talks. You would basically be the Spanish version of Superman! Those wanting to experience a different side of Salamanca can find placements in conservation, maintaining walking trails, planting trees, and beautifying the community.
Summer and short-term programs in Salamanca. While most placements in Salamanca tend to be long-term, those who don’t have enough time may be able to find placements as short as one week. Usually these take place in the form of conservation volunteering or short-term language exchanges with a host family. You can spend your holiday time teaching English to a local family while brushing up on your Spanish skills!
Long-term volunteer stints in Salamanca. Volunteer placements in the education field tend to require a long-term commitment, so volunteers can find opportunities from six months to a year. Optimize your impact in the community while building relationships and making Salamanca your cozy Spanish home.
