What inspired you to go abroad?

The decision to go abroad was one of the most transformative choices of my life. For years, I had dreamed of immersing myself in another culture, learning a new language, and seeing the world through a different lens.

What truly inspired me to take that step was my curiosity about how people live, communicate, and connect beyond my own cultural borders. When the opportunity to study and volunteer in Spain appeared, I knew it was exactly what I had been waiting for.

Spain attracted me for many reasons. Its language, history, and passion for life fascinated me. I wanted to experience that warmth firsthand—walking through old town streets, sharing conversations over tapas, and understanding the Spanish daily life rhythm

Living abroad wasn’t just about learning Spanish; it was about personal growth and developing independence and adaptability. In Spain, facing challenges taught me patience and open-mindedness, such as navigating new environments, adapting to schedules, and building cross-cultural relationships. Daily victories, like confidently ordering food in Spanish or finding my way in a new city, boosted my confidence.

One of the most meaningful parts of my experience was volunteering at a natural reserve with animals. Many were rescued from trafficking or poor conditions, and caring for them gave my stay purpose. Feeding them, cleaning habitats, and being present reminded me that kindness is universal. That experience connected my passion for travel with my desire to make a positive impact.

Going abroad to Spain didn’t just teach me about another culture—it taught me about myself. I learned that stepping outside your comfort zone is the best way to grow, and that the world is full of lessons if you’re willing to listen.

What inspired me most was the realization that every experience, no matter how challenging, is an opportunity to become a better version of yourself. Spain gave me that gift, and I will always be grateful for it.

Why did you choose Instituto Hemingway?

I chose Instituto Hemingway in Bilbao because it offered the perfect mix of Spanish language learning and cultural immersion. The school’s personalized approach, local activities, and volunteering opportunities allowed me to connect deeply with the culture while improving my Spanish in a supportive, inspiring environment.

What was your favorite part about Bilbao?

My favorite part about Bilbao was how perfectly it blends tradition with modernity.

Walking through the city, I could feel its transformation—from an industrial town to a vibrant cultural hub—while still keeping its Basque soul alive. The Guggenheim Museum was, of course, a highlight, not just for its architecture but for how it symbolizes Bilbao’s renewal and creativity.

But what truly made me fall in love with Bilbao was its atmosphere. The people are warm, proud, and deeply connected to their culture. I loved exploring the Casc Viejo, where every street seems to tell a story, and sharing pintxos with friends in lively local bars.

Surrounded by green mountains and so close to the sea, Bilbao felt like the perfect balance between nature and city life. Every corner inspired me—its art, its food, its rhythm. Bilbao didn’t just surprise me; it made me feel at home.

What made your experience abroad extraordinary?

What made my experience abroad extraordinary was the deep cultural and personal growth I experienced.

Living in Bilbao, learning Spanish, and volunteering with rescued animals allowed me to connect with people and nature in a meaningful way. Every challenge became a lesson, and every moment inspired gratitude and transformation.

How did local staff support you throughout your program?

Time in Bilbao

The local staff were incredibly supportive throughout my program. They guided me in language learning, organized cultural activities, and helped with daily challenges. Their encouragement, patience, and personalized attention made me feel welcomed, confident, and fully engaged in both the learning and volunteer experiences.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?

One thing I wish I had done differently during my time abroad is to have embraced even more spontaneous opportunities.

While I fully engaged with classes and volunteering, saying yes to extra local events, trips, and cultural experiences would have allowed me to connect even more deeply with the people and culture of Bilbao.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

A typical day abroad began with Spanish classes at Instituto Hemingway, followed by volunteering with rescued animals—feeding, caring, and improving their habitats. Afternoons were for exploring Bilbao, practicing Spanish, or enjoying local cuisine. Evenings were spent with fellow students, reflecting on the day, and immersing myself in the city’s vibrant culture.

What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?

During my free time abroad, I loved exploring Bilbao’s streets, enjoying local cuisine like pintxos, and visiting cultural sites such as the Guggenheim. I also enjoyed walks in nearby parks, meeting locals, and practicing Spanish in everyday situations, which made my experience both fun and immersive.

One thing I loved about my free time in Bilbao was that it served as a perfect base to explore not only the city but also other nearby towns and even countries. Traveling was fast, affordable, and convenient compared to my home country, allowing me to make the most of weekends and discover new cultures easily.

What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?

I stayed in a shared apartment with my own private room, located in a safe, central, and vibrant area of Bilbao. The apartment had all the necessary comforts, making it a convenient and comfortable home base during my stay abroad. The neighborhood was cosmopolitan, with shops, cafes, and public transport nearby.

What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?

One thing every future participant should know is that the program requires curiosity and openness.

Bilbao and Instituto Hemingway offer endless opportunities to learn, explore, and volunteer, but the experience is what you make of it. Being proactive, engaging with locals, and embracing new challenges will make the program truly unforgettable.

Would you recommend your Instituto Hemingway to others? Why?

I would highly recommend Instituto Hemingway in Bilbao to others.

The staff are supportive, the classes are engaging, and the cultural and volunteering opportunities make the experience unique. Living in Bilbao allows students to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and culture while feeling safe, welcomed, and inspired every day.

What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?

The biggest benefit of traveling abroad is personal growth.

Immersing yourself in a new culture, navigating challenges, and connecting with people from different backgrounds expands your perspective. It builds independence, adaptability, and empathy, while creating unforgettable experiences that shape both your worldview and your character.

Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?

Now that I’m home, my time abroad has had a lasting impact on my life.

Living in Bilbao and volunteering with rescued animals taught me independence, resilience, and empathy. I became more confident navigating new situations, communicating in Spanish, and embracing different cultures.

The experience also inspired me to seek meaningful connections and pursue opportunities that combine personal growth with making a positive impact in the world. It truly changed how I view life and my future goals.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

Meaningful travel, to me, is about connecting deeply with people, cultures, and the environment.

It goes beyond sightseeing, allowing you to learn, contribute, and grow. Volunteering, engaging with locals, and immersing yourself in new experiences transform travel into something memorable, impactful, and truly life-changing.
