This experience was truly unforgettable. The beach clean-up volunteering had a real environmental impact and an amazing vibe—sometimes we were even singing while collecting trash and protecting nature. Healing Through Creativity: My Art Therapy Volunteering Experience
February 19, 2026by: Mary Flowers - United StatesProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
Volunteering in the Art Therapy program at Instituto Hemingway was one of the most meaningful experiences of my time in Spain. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed into a supportive, professional environment where creativity was truly valued as a tool for connection and healing. The program allowed me to work alongside dedicated coordinators and inspiring participants from diverse backgrounds. Each session offered a safe space for self-expression through painting, drawing, and creative activities. It was incredible to see how art helped people communicate emotions they couldn’t always put into words. Even simple exercises often led to powerful moments of reflection, laughter, and personal growth. What I appreciated most was the human side of the project. The focus was not on artistic skill, but on the process itself — exploring feelings, building confidence, and strengthening social bonds. I learned how art therapy can support emotional wellbeing, reduce stress, and encourage mindfulness in a natural, accessible way. Every participant was respected, listened to, and encouraged at their own pace. The team provided clear guidance while also giving volunteers space to contribute ideas and interact directly with participants. This balance made the experience both educational and empowering. I developed new communication skills, deepened my empathy, and gained practical insight into how creative therapies are used in real community settings. Beyond the sessions themselves, the volunteering experience helped me connect with local culture and people in a very authentic way. It was deeply rewarding to feel useful, to share time with others, and to witness small but meaningful changes week after week. Each day reminded me that creativity can be a bridge between people, cultures, and emotions. I would highly recommend this Art Therapy volunteering program to anyone looking for a purposeful experience abroad. It combines learning, service, and personal growth in a unique way. I left with unforgettable memories, valuable skills, and a renewed appreciation for the power of art to heal, inspire, and bring people together.

Football Volunteering Program in Northern Spain
October 25, 2025by: Felix Springer - United KingdomProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
The football volunteering program in Bilbao is an incredible opportunity for anyone who loves sports, culture, and community work. It combines football with social inclusion, offering participants a meaningful way to contribute while discovering life in the Basque Country. What makes this program so special is its holistic approach. Volunteers not only take part in football activities but also enjoy Spanish courses, cultural excursions, and comfortable accommodation. These experiences help participants fully immerse themselves in local life and understand the rich traditions of Bilbao. Moreover, the program plays a vital role in integrating immigrants and local residents through football. The sport becomes a common language that breaks down cultural barriers and promotes teamwork, respect, and friendship. It’s inspiring to see how football can unite people from different backgrounds and create a strong sense of belonging. Overall, this volunteering experience is more than just a sports project—it’s a bridge between cultures and a chance to make a positive impact on the community while growing personally and socially.

Where Compassion Found Its Wild Heart
October 16, 2025by: Lucy Felicia - FranceProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
Volunteering at a wildlife rescue changed me forever. Caring for animals once victims of trafficking—feeding them, cleaning their spaces, walking and comforting them—taught me empathy in its purest form. From parrots to foxes, each creature had a story of survival. Helping rebuild their habitats helped me rebuild a part of myself too. It was not just service—it was transformation.

Colors of Healing: Empowering Lives Through Art and Emotion
October 08, 2025by: Lucy Chulapova - United StatesProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
Last year, I took part in an inspiring art therapy volunteer program that completely changed the way I see creativity and healing. The project focused on helping patients express their emotions through painting. Every day, I worked alongside therapists and volunteers, guiding participants to use colors, shapes, and textures to tell their personal stories. It was incredible to see how art became a safe space for people to communicate feelings that words couldn’t express. Over time, the participants grew more confident and proud of their creations. What made the experience even more meaningful was that their artwork was later exhibited and sold, allowing them to share their voices with the community and raise funds for future sessions. I felt deeply fulfilled knowing I was part of something that brought hope, beauty, and empowerment to others. Beyond improving my artistic and interpersonal skills, the experience taught me that art can truly heal and connect us all.

Waves of Change: Volunteering, Friendship, and Spanish Adventures in Northern Spain
October 08, 2025by: irina Hart - SwedenProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
Last summer, I joined a fantastic volunteer program in the north of Spain, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I met wonderful new friends from different countries, and together we worked hard cleaning beaches and collecting litter along the coast. It felt amazing to be useful and contribute to protecting the environment while surrounded by stunning landscapes. In the afternoons, we took part in cultural activities organized by the school — cooking classes, dance workshops, and local festivals. Every day, my Spanish improved as I practiced with locals and other volunteers. It was the perfect mix of helping others, learning, and having fun.

Volunteering for beach cleanups along the northern coast of Spain was an inspiring and eye-opening experience. Working side by side with people who care deeply about the environment showed me how collective action can create a real impact. Each day, we collected plastic, fishing gear, and other debris, helping restore the natural beauty of the beaches and protect marine wildlife. Beyond the physical work, I learned about the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems and the importance of reducing waste at its source. The fresh sea air, breathtaking landscapes, and sense of purpose made every effort rewarding. I left with a stronger commitment to sustainability and a deeper appreciation for the ocean. This experience proves how small actions, when shared, can protect our planet for future generations.

A Life-Changing Experience Volunteering at an Animal Shelter in Northern Spain
September 20, 2025by: Julia Reed - SwitzerlandProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
Volunteering at an animal shelter in northern Spain was an unforgettable experience. Spending time with rescued dogs and cats, many of them abandoned or mistreated, taught me the real meaning of empathy and responsibility. Each day was different: feeding, cleaning, walking the dogs through the stunning countryside, or simply offering affection to shy animals learning to trust again. The dedication of the staff inspired me — their patience and love create a safe space where every animal has a chance to heal and find a new home. Beyond helping animals, I met amazing people from around the world who share the same passion. This experience not only improved my practical skills but also deepened my respect for animal welfare and teamwork. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful way to give back while discovering the beauty of northern Spain.

Best experience ever in animal welfare
September 13, 2025by: Frank LLopis - United StatesProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
This volunteer program at the animal shelter was absolutely awesome! 🐾 From day one, everything felt super smooth — they even picked me up from the airport in a school taxi, which made arriving so easy. The Spanish course was a total game changer; it helped me connect better with everyone and made the whole experience even richer. The cultural activities were super fun too — such a cool way to get to know the local vibe and meet new people. Yeah, the shelter was a bit far from the city center, but honestly, that makes sense (you can’t exactly have a bunch of rescued animals downtown 😂). And it was totally worth the trip every time. The people — especially Antxon, Rodrigo, and Jose — were incredibly kind. I learned so much about animal care, teamwork, and Spanish, and I left feeling inspired and grateful. Highly recommend it if you’re up for an unforgettable adventure! 🌟

An amazing experience with a real impact
February 16, 2025by: Lucy Merkel - Northern IrelandProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
Volunteering for beach cleanups was an unforgettable experience. The people I met were fantastic, and the apartments were great—comfortable and close to everything. I loved how easy it was to explore the area and enjoy all kinds of cultural activities in my free time. The best part was knowing that my work made a real difference for the environment. Collecting waste and helping to keep the beaches clean was incredibly rewarding. On top of that, my Spanish improved so much thanks to the morning classes included in the program. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for meaningful volunteer work and cultural immersion. I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

February 16, 2025by: John Stew - United KingdomProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
Volunteering at this animal shelter and sanctuary just outside Bilbao has been the most incredible experience of my life. The people I met were amazing—kind, passionate, and truly dedicated to caring for the animals. The sanctuary itself is breathtaking, with a unique biodiversity that makes you feel like you’re in Africa, even though you're still in Europe! Every day was an adventure, working with all kinds of animals and learning so much about their care and conservation. It’s a place full of love, respect, and a deep connection with nature. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for meaningful volunteer work. I can’t wait to go back!
Unforgettable Volunteering Experience with Animals
February 02, 2025by: Mary Meier - United StatesProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
From the moment I was picked up at the airport and taken to my accommodation (which had everything I needed), everything about this experience was simply amazing! Taking care of rescued animals, giving them love, walking, grooming, and playing with them was truly rewarding. It helped me regain a sense of purpose and the joy of helping others. My apartment mates were about my age but from different countries, which made it even more fun. We went on excursions together and joined activities organized by the school, where I met so many incredible people. Plus, the Spanish classes included in the program helped me improve so much—I can now communicate with no problem! ??✨ The atmosphere was fantastic, and Bilbao was the perfect location. The metro took you to beautiful beaches, and if you preferred the mountains, you could be there in just 30 minutes. It’s such a hidden gem—not the most famous tourist spot, but an absolute treasure! This experience was truly life-changing, and even my university recognized its value when I returned. I couldn’t recommend it more! ??? Let me know if you’d like any tweaks! ?

This volunteering program in permaculture and gardening was absolutely fantastic! ?? Not only is Bilbao an incredible city, but the whole experience was beyond my expectations. The accommodation was super comfortable, and the cultural activities organized by the school were a solid 10/10! The Spanish school was excellent—I improved my Spanish so much in a fun and relaxed environment. My classmates were all super friendly, and I had the best time. The school was also really welcoming (LGTB+ friendly), and I always felt safe and valued. ? I can only say great things about this program! I learned a lot about permaculture, the importance of being useful, and how rewarding it feels to do something for others. If you’re thinking about it—go for it! You won’t regret it. ?

Wonderful volunteering experience in Spain
December 08, 2023by: Lucy East - GermanyProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
The volunteer teaching program was a great experience. Having never taught children before the first couple of days were a bit daunting but by day three I was very comfortable. The kids were adorable and loved interacting with us. Just seeing their faces light up each day when we arrived was amazing. I will never forget them. This is a great option for short term volunteers. Bilbao is gorgeous, safe and really welcoming. There are loads of lovely restaurants, shops and markets so it is a nice place to explore when you are not with the school. Instituto Hemingway will organise great tours for you too.
Volunteer trip in Spain for transition year
December 04, 2023by: Tim Schneider - GermanyProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain
I went on a projects abroad trip to Spain with my school during transition year. I went for three weeks. We worked on conservancy, worked with the kids and painted in the school, and climbed Mt Pagasarri. The communication before and during the trip really put my mind at ease. I had an amazing time and projects abroad made the whole process easy and worry-free. Myself and my classmates enjoyed the time we had together. I had an incredible, life- changing experience! I would definitely recommend projects abroad (and already have)
