This research project supports ongoing research at Lory Park Zoo in Johannesburg, South Africa. Projects include black-footed cat rearing, leopard and serval husbandry, the effects of lockdown on animal welfare, and improving welfare through enrichment projects. Students spend time learning to identify animal behavior and analyzing several camera traps. Each fellowship is comprised of four blocks. The first block develops the basis of animal behavior, ethograms, and enrichment. The second block sets baseline observations by analyzing camera traps. After the enrichment project has been designed, block three analyzes camera trap footage after the project has been implemented. In block four, students work with the research team to combine data and statistically analyze it to present findings. Students are supervised and mentored virtually in group and one-on-one sessions. Each six-week fellowship requires 100 research hours. They can earn 200 research hours with our twelve-week sessions. Upon completion, they earn a Captive Animal Behavior Monitoring and Enrichment certificate from Loop Abroad.

Asia-Pacific Academic (APA) offers both offline and online internships in the Asia-Pacific, welcoming students across the world to step out of the classroom and apply acquired knowledge to real work experiences in a multicultural environment. Join the research team at the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) to collect and analyze data, a critical step needed to protect the Placencia Lagoon as a wildlife sanctuary and gain government protection. Fellows conduct research on various species (including crocodiles and manatees) within local habitats and involve various community members to promote a local supervising task force for the lagoon. This is delivered 100% online and is limited to 20 Fellows. This fellowship involves wildlife research methodology, crocodile ecology and biology, parasitology research, and translational ecology. The Director of the CRC also promotes discussion of the challenges of wildlife conservation and management by utilizing her experience with local, national, and international regulatory organizations. After learning basic techniques for wildlife research and conservation, fellows are introduced and assigned to current research projects necessary to protect the lagoon. All fellows have the opportunity to earn 100 research hours for their veterinary medical college applications while making a significant impact on the protection of crocodiles and manatees in Belize.
