With the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC), students will join the team to collect and analyze data we intend to use as supplemental data. This will be handed over to the Belize Forest Department, helping them to establish the Placencia Lagoon as a Wildlife Sanctuary and protect the critical habitat from further development. The program will take a holistic approach while studying several species, including manatees, within the crocodile habitat. Drones will be flown systematically and students will count and identify manatees and crocodiles to create a baseline population count. They will review footage from camera traps to collect data on crocodile nesting and images of elusive terrestrial species such as jaguars, tapirs, and birds. They will also learn how to analyze parasites in var...

September 21, 2021by: Ness Benjamin - United StatesProgram: Belize Crocodile and Manatee Research Fellowship (Online)The Belize Crocodile and Manatee Research Fellowship allowed me to learn so much more in depth about the conservation of crocodiles and manatees. You will learn about what is affecting the ecosystem in Belize and how multiple species are being affected by this. It was really interesting to listen to Marissa and Jane talk about their past work experience in Belize and what they are currently working on. You learn a lot about how they conduct research when in the field. During some of your time as a research fellow you will review current data being collected in Belize through camera trap data and drone surveys. This fellowship is a great way to kickstart your research experience or even just to learn more about wildlife conservation.
