How to Get Economics Internships Online
Overview
Prepare for an Internship
Understand the benefits
Online economics internships aren't just resume padding — they're where theory meets the real world, and the payoff is immediate. Here's what you stand to gain:
- Real-world application of economic theory. You'll take the models and frameworks from your coursework and apply them to live projects—market analysis, policy briefs, financial forecasting, and more. The gap between academia and professional practice closes fast.
- Global exposure without relocating. Remote economics internships connect you with international organizations, NGOs, startups, and research institutions across Asia, Latin America, Europe, and beyond. You build a global perspective from wherever you already are.
- In-demand remote work skills. Employers increasingly value candidates who can thrive in distributed teams. A virtual economics internship puts cross-cultural collaboration, digital communication, and independent project management directly on your CV.
Things to know
Going in prepared makes everything smoother. Here's what to keep in mind before you start your online economics internship:
- Time zones matter. Some meetings may fall outside your standard hours. Confirm overlap expectations up front and factor them into your schedule.
- Technology setup is your responsibility. A stable internet connection, a working microphone, and familiarity with platforms like Slack, Zoom, and Google Workspace are baseline requirements. Get these sorted before day one.
- Professionalism is still expected. Even across a screen, your communication, punctuality, and quality of work reflect directly on your professional reputation. Treat it like you would an in-person role.
Getting Started
Tips & Advice
Finding the right online economics internship takes a little strategy, but once you've got the right program, the experience practically runs itself. Here's how to get there.
1. Get matched

3. Choose how long to stay
The length of your internship shapes what you'll actually accomplish, so think about what you want to walk away with.
- Short-term. Best for getting exposure to professional economics work and adding a credible line to your resume without a major time commitment.
- Semester. The sweet spot for most students. Long enough to take on a real project from start to finish and build meaningful relationships with your team.
- Academic year. Designed for students who want deep immersion and the chance to contribute to larger, longer-arc research or organizational projects. Strong for those pursuing post-grad roles.
- Long-term. Best suited to recent graduates or career changers who want comprehensive professional development and a robust portfolio before entering the job market full-time.
5. Funding & scholarships
Cost shouldn't be the thing standing between you and real-world experience. Fill out GoAbroad's scholarships & deals application to get instantly matched with funding opportunities, discounts, and deals for online internship programs.
6. Apply

Inspirational Team and Impactful Project
April 15, 2026by: Pablo Quintanilla - SpainMy experience with the Fundraising & Partnerships Internship at Future for Africa was both eye-opening and empowering. It gave me a practical, behind-the-scenes understanding of what it really takes to sustain impact-driven projects. From the start, I was actively involved in designing and supporting fundraising strategies not just observing, but contributing ideas that were genuinely considered. I had the opportunity to work on grant writing, develop campaign concepts, and assist in planning outreach efforts to both local and international partners. This hands-on exposure made the learning experience very real and valuable. One of the most rewarding aspects was engaging with partners and supporters. Whether it was helping draft communications, contributing to newsletters, or supporting relationship-building efforts, I could see how strong partnerships directly translate into meaningful community impact. The collaborative environment stood out as well. Working closely with the Fundraising and Partnerships Manager and other teams helped me understand how different parts of the organization connect toward a shared mission. I also appreciated the creative freedom especially in developing content for social media and campaigns which allowed me to bring my own ideas to life. This internship is ideal for anyone interested in nonprofit fundraising, communications, or partnership development. It’s not just a learning experience; it’s an opportunity to actively contribute to something meaningful while building practical, transferable skills.

My time at this internship has been an incredibly valuable experience. I was initially very nervous to commit, even during the interview. However, I had nothing to worry about since, looking back, I was able to choose the internship field based on my interests and career. They help you along the whole process and answering your questions is just an email away. My experience at my internship organization was your usual spreadsheet task and helping with whatever the team needed. Due to the remote nature, there is only so much you can do to help; they do have in-person ones also! Each organization is different, and depending on the organization, it can affect your experience. My university also offered credits (usually an online class) and covered any costs of the internship as part of the program. I recommend it to any student because not only do you get credit, but you also have the freedom to do other summer activities; the best of both worlds. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to advance my career path, help out a genuine and impactful organization, and learn what real-world work looks like.

The process was seamless, and I felt supported every step of the way. What stood out most was how invested the team was in my success they provided guidance, resources, and encouragement that made all the difference. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity they helped me secure, and I’d highly recommend 123 Connect to anyone looking to take the next step in their career journey.

February 03, 2026by: Christine NProgram: Top-rated Internships Aligned with Your Goals & Interests!
During my internship with an autism research network, I contributed to an international project focused on autism screening and community research priorities. My work involved systematically screening studies, reviewing inclusion/exclusion criteria, and extracting detailed data into shared spreadsheets. I gained experience in critically reading abstracts and full texts, interpreting methodologies, and paying close attention to performance metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, and AUC values. Beyond technical skills, this internship gave me a deeper appreciation for the nuances of autism research — especially the importance of ethical considerations, community involvement, and shifting away from overly medicalized models of disability. I learned how to apply exclusion codes consistently, collaborate with peers across time zones, and manage large datasets precisely. This experience strengthened my research skills and my ability to reflect on the broader impact of scientific work. It challenged me to think critically about equity in autism research, including representation across countries, age ranges, and support needs. I now feel much more confident navigating scientific literature and contributing to conversations around research priorities. Overall, my internship was both practical and meaningful. It reinforced my academic interests in neurobiology and psychology while developing transferable organizational skills, critical analysis, and teamwork skills. I am grateful for the experience and for the opportunity to contribute to research that has real-world impact.

I got matched with a company relevant to my interests and worked with some amazing people. In my internship I created lead magnets and developed an operations manual/cultural handbook for a film production company. The skills I developed most while interning have been communication, adaptability, and time-management. Xena showed a genuine understanding of my goals and challenges. She was always responsive and open to addressing any questions. Her willingness to help made me feel heard and supported throughout the Connect-123 internship program.

I am truly so thankful for Connect-123 for helping me find my perfect internship. Both my internships have been through Connect-123 and both were amazing experiences. My program director, Xena Pulliam, has been such a wonderful source of guidance and support throughout this entire process. The company I was initially interviewed by was about an hour late to the interview, and though the deadline for finding a placement was approaching, she didn’t give up on me. She found me the perfect placement at another company and even communicated on my behalf to ensure the work I was given aligned with my goals and interests. Through this experience, I was able to build valuable connections, develop new skills, and gain hands-on experience that has shaped my career path. I’m so grateful to Xena and Connect-123 for making both of my internships not only possible but truly meaningful.

I’m incredibly grateful for the support I received from Connect 123 and my supervisors throughout my internship experience. Their guidance made it possible for me to secure an internship quickly, and over the course of eight weeks, I learned an incredible amount—not only through the internship itself, but also through the professional and skill development opportunities they encouraged. Beyond gaining hands-on experience, I developed stronger communication, time management, and problem-solving skills that I will carry forward in my career.

Landed me my dream internship!!!!
August 03, 2025by: Naj AB - Saudi ArabiaOne of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I originally planned to do one of their in-person internships, but due to some unexpected circumstances, I switched to the virtual option, and it turned out to be the best decision I could’ve made. From the beginning, Matthew was incredibly thoughtful and attentive. Every opportunity he shared with me aligned closely with my goals, and the one I ultimately accepted ended up being exactly the kind of role, company, and work environment I had envisioned. The Spanish classes included in the program were also a game changer. They introduced me to an amazing teacher who has helped me make more progress than I ever expected. I genuinely can’t recommend this program enough. Don’t think twice, it’s 100% worth it. Trusting them took so much pressure off my shoulders, and it’s honestly made life feel lighter. More than anything, see it as an investment in yourself. They don’t just place you anywhere, they carefully match you with respected companies and NGOs that fit your goals and values!

January 25, 2025by: Michael Cheng - CanadaProgram: Go Global from Home! International Virtual Internships
It was a positive experience. I wish I could have used my construction experience but there was no work available in that area. We mainly did painting and sanding down paint. It did not feel as if we were directly helping anyone other than making walls look nice.
A Warm and Welcoming Community Experience
November 28, 2024by: Bing YouThe best part of my time here has been the incredible sense of community. The environment is relaxed and friendly, with people on the street greeting you, which makes everything feel very welcoming. A Valuable Real-World Experience in Public Health and Nonprofit Work
November 19, 2024by: Soo In KimThis experience provided me with a meaningful opportunity to apply my studies in epidemiology and public health to real-world projects. Being able to work on a public health project similar to what I do in university allowed me to immerse myself practically and deepen my understanding of the field. Collaborating with Alejandro, the supervisor of Research Program on the impact report was especially valuable, as I'm considering a career in nonprofit work. This experience gave me insight into how nonprofits operate and what it's like to work in this sector. Alejandro was incredibly supportive, offering guidance and always ready to help. Overall, this experience was highly beneficial for gaining practical knowledge and exploring potential career paths.
A Positive Experience with Real Responsibility and Autonomy
November 12, 2024by: Osbert Xiao HanOverall, my experience was very positive. I appreciated being placed directly into an environment where I felt like a true part of the organization. The level of autonomy I had was one of the best aspects, as it allowed me to take ownership of my work and manage my responsibilities independently. Alejandro, my supervisor was instrumental in providing this opportunity for autonomy, which made the experience even more rewarding and engaging. This experience gave me a genuine sense of responsibility and hands-on learning that I greatly valued.
