Overview
Prepare for an Internship
Set goals
Setting goals that align with your work will look different than anyone else. Here are a few broad goals most people can use as inspiration.
- Identify key technical skills and connections to prioritize during the internship. By focusing on these, even small tasks can be seen as contributing to your long-term career goals.
- Use this time to strengthen academic skills and develop a plan to apply insights to the classroom or office. Connecting theory and practice turns work experience into a lasting asset that improves future performance.
- Challenge personal boundaries by seeking tasks just outside comfort zones at work and in personal growth. Growth rarely occurs in safety, so embracing manageable discomfort unlocks new capabilities.
- Define specific professional traits and mirror those values in supporting colleagues. Reliability goes beyond deadlines; it builds integrity and makes you a desirable team member.
Understand the benefits
Canadian internships are well-regarded and offer a good base of benefits:
- Real-world experience that aids academics or professional development. Interning in a large country like Canada offers dynamic, hands-on experience.
- Networking with like-minded peers and mentors. Interning in a field that excites you means there are plenty of connections to make.
- Experiencing new cultures. While part of the program, you’ll experience how people in different parts of the world live professionally and personally.
- Build your education and resume. The rest of the benefits all build up to this, in a professional manner! People pay attention to those who’ve interned abroad.
Things to know
Interning in Canada combines valuable work experience with the chance to explore its diverse culture and landscapes. Here’s what to know about life and logistics before you go!
- Living basics. Affordable housing, including company-arranged options, is available, and many internships are paid. Interns gain job experience, amenities, and exposure to Canada’s bilingual culture and varied climates.
- Permits & visas. Interns need a work permit, sometimes a study permit, often arranged by schools. The visa process is straightforward, with many companies offering support. Internships last 6 to 12 months with flexible hours.
Location
Choose a Location
Canada offers diverse internship opportunities, but the benefits and programs can vary between provinces and cities. Here are three top choices for internships.
Vancouver
Vancouver attracts thousands of interns annually, with its otherworldly location on the coast and proximity to the United States. The city's high quality of life, opportunities, and beautiful surroundings make it a highly desirable location for interns.
Toronto
Toronto is known for internship placements in the arts, sciences, architecture, and finance sectors. The city is home to prominent media companies, making it an excellent choice for aspiring arts and culture-related students. Toronto's competitive business environment provides valuable training for interns in the corporate sector.
Ontario
Ontario offers a unique blend of urban and rural internship opportunities. Urban internships focus on finance and information technology, while rural placements often revolve around agriculture. This balance makes Ottawa an exceptional location for interns seeking diverse experiences in both settings.
Fields
Choose a Field
Canada’s multicultural environment, strong economy, and emphasis on creativity in all sectors make it an ideal choice for those looking to start a career in these fields. Here are a few highlights available!
Business
Since business is one of the most popular and largest-reaching fields, it’s no surprise that Canada has great offerings. Learn anything from the administrative side to marketing in a large and successful business landscape.
Sustainable Development
Canada has been actively working on its sustainable development goals, so of course, there’s an opportunity in the field to intern. Regardless of your interest, you can bet that internships can offer you plenty of opportunities!
Marketing, Advertising, & PR Internships
Canada offers excellent options for marketing, advertising, and PR internships. Cities like Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal host vibrant industries, providing hands-on experience in diverse sectors. While not necessarily as large as the USA's field, it still has a lot to offer.

I spent 4 weeks on the FMBP course in August 2023. During this time I learnt to identify over 20 families of vascular plants and was additionally trained in the use of GIS software. This experience subsequently assisted me in obtaining a job in the conservation sector in my home country. During my stay , Dave wasaninc iredibly knowledgeable and helpful teacher and also welcomed me into his community which supported me when being so far away from home. I would recommend his courses to anyone.

I had the best 6 months of my life so far in Canada with EA. It provides you with great development to your skiing as well as aiding you to become a confident instructor. Furthermore, I met some great friends whilst being away that I will have for life. Couldn’t, recommended more. It was quite pricey though.

Thanks for recommending our instructor program, Deacon! We’re so glad that you had an amazing experience and have made lifelong friends. -The EA Team
Best training program out there
August 20, 2023by: Omri Raor Baratz - IsraelProgram: Winter Gap Year - Become a Ski or Snowboard Instructor!
I did the EA level 1 and 2 program in NZ last year and it was amazing. The EA crew did everything they could to make sure our time in NZ will be the best they possibly could, the accommodation was really good, they made a lot of efforts to make us feel welcome and have fun and we had a lot of activities outside of training. Training wise, the course was amazing, we had small groups with the best instructors the mountain had to offer, and the program his built to make sure you'll pass your exam, it focuses on the riding skills and also the teaching and analyzing skills you need to pass the exams. I highly recommend to everyone that wants to pass the instructor exams or just have fun and get better in snowboarding on taking the EA program
Hey Omri, we loved having you join us in New Zealand. Thank you so much for recommending the program and congratulations on your achievements! -The EA Team

February 10, 2023by: Jane Daley - United KingdomProgram: Become a Ski Instructor in Canada - Training + Job Included
My daughter set off for the EA Lake Louise internship program in November 2022 and she is having the time of her life. She was assigned her own contact, Kerie, in the run up to her trip who was very helpful with information regarding the whole process, visa applications and flights. The Level 1 training took only 2 weeks and she is already training for her Level 2. A job at the end of Level 1 training was guaranteed which is a huge bonus! The work/life balance is perfect and she is teaching a mixture of private lessons, and group lessons to adults and children. She is also able to work additional hours on the resort lifts. We have been to visit and met some of her new friends from all over the world. In addition to her skiing she is now proficient in snow boarding and ice skating. The area is breathtakingly beautiful. This is an opportunity that should not be missed. We are so happy for our daughter and very proud parents.
Hey Jane, we’re thrilled to read about the fantastic experience your daughter had on her internship. Thank you for your kind words and we hope she holds these memories and friendships close for the years to come! -The EA Team
Field botany mentorship program

Field Botany Mentorship Program - an excellent opportunity to increase your skills in field botany and surveying practices. I particularly enjoyed the work with species at risk and applying ELC throughout each trip.
Earthquest mentorship
November 06, 2017by: TiliaCordataProgram: Mentorship Program in Field Botany
The time I spent working alongside Dave was valuable in increasing my knowledge on plant families, genera, and general surveying methods. I learned a lot about the environmental industry, whether it was consulting itself, or the process of restoring at-risk species, and it was very useful to interact with someone who as experience in these fields as well. It was quite helpful for guiding my goals, and for knowing the next steps in bettering my skills and becoming more qualified for a job in the environmental industry. It felt nice to re-immerse myself into field ecology and conducting botanical surveys, and I am happy to have taken the time throughout the summer to learn more about the plants in our backyards and see some of the rare plant populations that exist in southern Ontario.
