How to Study High School Programs Abroad
Overview
Can you study abroad in high school?
You can absolutely study abroad in high school! Your best options for participating in teen travel programs are to either go abroad during a school break, like summer or spring break, or to go on an exchange program for a full academic year. The right choice for you will depend on your budget, how old you are, and your GPA.
Doing high school study abroad during a school break is considerably cheaper than studying abroad for an entire year, and there aren’t as many logistics to consider, like making sure you’ll get the school credit you need. However, if you have serious academic goals for yourself in college, a high school exchange program will leave college admissions officers impressed!
The requirements to study abroad in high school are usually:
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Permission from your parents and/or school
- Financial capability
- A certain level of maturity and sense of responsibility
Finances
How much does it cost to study abroad in high school?
The cost of studying abroad in high school will depend on your program duration. If you’re only going abroad for spring break, you can probably expect programs to be $2000-$3000 (not including airfare). Summer programs will be a bit pricier, and probably start at around $5000. Full academic years will be a serious investment, and cost $10000 or more. Is it possible to study abroad in high school for free? Kind of. If you apply for the right scholarships and grants, you could get a decent amount of your tuition covered.
Getting Started
How to study abroad in high school
If you have your mind set on studying abroad in high school, here are some vital steps to take towards making your dreams a reality:
- Figure out why you’re interested in high school travel programs. Studying abroad in high school sounds awesome (and it is!), but that shouldn’t be your only reason for pursuing teen travel programs. Do you have academic goals, like taking an extra class you can use for college? Or personal goals, like learning a new language? Figuring out why you want to study abroad in high school will not only make your experience more fulfilling—it’ll also make it a lot easier to sell the idea to your parents.
- Decide where you want to go. You might already have a destination in mind, but don’t forget that this is one of the most important decisions you can make prior to high school study abroad. Do you want to stay somewhat close to home, or head to the complete opposite side of the world? Is there a culture you’ve always wanted to experience firsthand, or are you open to anything? Deciding where to go will obviously shape your entire experience!
- Talk to your parents or guardians. This might be the hardest step to studying abroad in high school, but it’s one you can’t skip—especially since your parents will most likely be the ones funding your trip. Luckily, if you prepare and anticipate their reactions or questions, there’s no reason the conversation can’t go well!
- Apply for high school study abroad programs. Once you know where you want to go, what you want to do, and you’ve secured your parents’ permission, it’s time to start applying! There are hundreds of high school travel programs out there, so you may need a bit of help finding the right one for you.
Benefits
What are the benefits of studying abroad in high school?
The benefits of studying abroad in high school are many. There’s no denying that traveling abroad can open your eyes to the world and give you perspective on what really matters. You’ll mature faster, gain confidence in yourself earlier, and maybe find that your goals for the future have completely changed! The culture shock can be challenging to cope with, and it may be difficult leaving your comfort zone, but trust us when we say those feelings are always 100% worth it.
Locations
Where are the best places to study abroad in high school?
The best place to study abroad in high school for you will depend on your goals and budget. If you’re not interested in learning a new language, maybe the United Kingdom, Australia, or South Africa are the destinations for you. Or, if you’re trying to stay within a reasonable budget, maybe you’ll want to stay closer to home and head to Canada, Mexico, or Central America. Truly, there’s no wrong place to go for youth travel programs—but there are some destinations that will fit you better than others.
When
What is the best year to study abroad in high school?
Most likely, you’ll want to study abroad later in high school. Being 16-18 years old will afford you a bit more freedom and independence during your teen travel program. However, the best year to study abroad in high school is any year! There’s no wrong time to study abroad as long as you have clear intentions and focused goals for your experience abroad.
And don’t forget that after high school travel programs also exist! You can go abroad during the summer after high school, take a full gap year, or even wait to study abroad in college. The latter is sometimes the better option, since there’s a chance you can apply your financial aid or student loans to cover part of your study abroad tuition.

Arcos in Santiago de Compostela
August 18, 2026by: J S - United StatesI had a very excellent time on my Arcos Journeys Abroad program, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and on the Camino de Santiago. The host families were incredible, as were all the chaperones and teachers. The activities were always very fun, and there was a nice balance of structured time and free time. The Camino was also amazing, and I was unexpectedly delighted by that aspect of the trip. Thank you!!
Best summer and best memories!

Best experience ever
August 14, 2026by: Sofia Bertoli - ItalyProgram: Young Adults Summer Program in Spain
I spent two weeks of July in Barcelona with Expanish School and it was one of the best experiences of my life. In two weeks I learned a lot thanks to the teachers and the trips we did during the week and in the weekends. I got to know some amazing people that became my friends and with them I shared this magnificent experience. My host family was so lovely, they immediately made me feel comfortable and at home. Now that my experience has finished I find myself thinking about the days spent in Barcelona with Expanish. I already recommended the school to my friends because I think it is really really valid.

I had a great time

My host family was amazing, the teacher was very nice and helpful and I could learn a lot. The activities were fun and were helping me learn more about the place and the culture. Unfortunately not many people my age were attending them but they were still very fun
Highly Recommend!
August 13, 2026by: K. S. - United StatesWe had a wonderful experience with Expanish! Communication was excellent from the time we enrolled and throughout the entire program. They were always very responsive whenever we emailed with questions, and everything was extremely well organized. The paperwork was easy to complete electronically. We dropped our 14 year old son off and picked him up in person, so we also had a chance to see the facilities and meet the staff. The facilities were clean, modern, and well maintained, and the counselors were very friendly and welcoming in person. Most importantly, our son had a great time. He attended just one week this summer and enjoyed it so much that he’s already asked to go back for three weeks next summer. I think that says it all! We would definitely recommend Expanish!

August 06, 2026by: Anaya Brown - Simba - United StatesPutney Student Travel’s Career Costa Rica program was the most rewarding experience of my life. In many cases, it was my first time doing so many things that I wouldn’t typically imagine myself doing, such as snorkeling, adobe construction, night hikes in the middle of the rainforest and sea turtle patrols. Alongside the incredible activities, the lodging was also amazing. We stayed in numerous eco-lodges (each with similar sleeping arrangements to attending camp; 1-4 per room) that gave us the opportunity to experience some form of luxury while still immersing ourselves in local Costa Rican beauty. Each location also offered incredible Tico, American and some Italian food with vegetarian options. We dined alongside each other at a family-style table for all three meals of the day and occasional snack. We genuinely were like family and I felt fully supported by both the students and staff. I honestly miss everyone so much already (it’s been a week). The group leaders were also very chill and shared so much wisdom about the customs, culture and different wildlife we encountered. In one instance, a student had to be taken to the doctor and it was a smooth process, with the kid being able to receive appropriate care. However, the worst part of the program was probably the late nights and early mornings during the few days that we were helping out with sea turtle night patrols. I truly had a blast and sincerely hope that I am able to travel again with Putney. From the commute there to our very last moments together, I don’t have a single regret.

August 05, 2026by: Emy Yoshida - EnglandProgram: GLA Ghana: Children of Africa
I went to Ghana as my second GLA program, we were so warmly welcomed into the community as we taught at the local schools, played in the park with the children and were welcomed into local homes to learn the language. The teaching at the school however was the highlight of the trip, we got to know all our students well and teach them some new things, like songs and harder vocab. I would definitely recommend!!
Best time ever
August 05, 2026by: Patrick Turner - American SamoaThis program was an amazing experience and gave me the chance to travel to Spain while improving my Spanish. Living with a host family helped me learn about the culture, and the classes were fun, interactive, and easy to follow. I also enjoyed exploring different cities and trying new foods with the group. Overall, I would definitely recommend this program to anyone looking to study abroad, meet new people, and create unforgettable memories.
I had an amazing time here.
August 04, 2026by: cheyenne flamer - United StatesThis GLA program was such a life changing experience for me. During the trip I not only learned about different cultures, but I meet so many awesome new people. The other students I meet on this trip, I still talk to often. This trip allowed me to take into consideration what future careers I may be interested in. The staff were amazing and made the experience so much better. I would recommend this trip to everyone.

August 03, 2026by: Neila RumfeltProgram: High School Abroad in Costa Rica with Greenheart Travel!
My experience studying abroad in Costa Rica was truly unforgettable, and I am so grateful for the support and opportunities provided by my program. From the very beginning, the agency made sure I felt safe, supported, and prepared. They genuinely cared about my experience and my individual needs. Anytime I had a question or needed assistance, they were quick to respond and took action right away. Throughout my time abroad, I had countless opportunities to explore Costa Rica both within the city where I lived and beyond. The program provided many cultural activities that allowed me to better understand the country, experience new traditions, and practice my Spanish in real-life situations. These experiences helped me grow more confident and connected to the culture. My host family was another incredible part of my journey. They were kind, welcoming, and made me feel like a part of their family. They included me in everyday activities like grocery shopping, family game nights, and other moments that allowed me to experience authentic Costa Rican life. This program gave me memories, friendships, and personal growth that I will carry with me forever. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful and supportive study abroad experience.
