A Guide to Gap Year Skiing
Popular Locations
Go where the snow is dude—you probably won’t find gap year skiing programs in Mexico… duh! But where is the softest powder with the longest winter season? Can’t forget about the wicked mountain ranges. Well, there’s heaps of places in the world that has snow, but you have to find the gnarliest location to call home. Luckily, GoAbroad has the inside scoop on where the best gap year skiing locations are.
Canada. O Canada! My home and native land… of maple syrup and steep mountains. If there’s one thing that Canada knows what’s up, it’s winter. Hit the slopes at Whistler and Blackcomb, one of the best ski instructor gap year locations with breathtaking views-home to the 2010 Winter Olympics. Just north of Vancouver, British Columbia, the town of Whistler hosts hundreds of cool gap year ski instructor jobs to teach kids and adults how to hang loose and ride the wild mountains. Not ready to teach? Sign up for ski instructor course in Canada—they’re really easy to come by.
USA. Take a ride on the wintery wild side of Colorado and sink your skis into Cooper Mountain. This place is a (once kept) secret of the locals and it’s waayyy less touristy than Breckenridge (20 minutes away) or Vail (30 minutes away). While there are a few noble ski bunnies who know of this beautiful oasis, Copper Mountain offers notorious ski lessons. Want to join in on the success? Sign up for a paid gap year ski instructor program here!
Switzerland. Ok, who doesn’t enjoy one of the tallest mountains in Europe AND Swiss chocolate? *cough* Toblerone saves lives. Come to the heart of the continent to find gap year ski instructor courses in Europe. Hop on a gondola at Zermatt Ski Resort in Switzerland. Famous for the location of Matterhorn Mountain, tons of people flock to view the iconic nature structure. In Zermatt, you’ll never go a day without meeting someone new or teaching a couple new tricks to a first time snow bunny. Find cool gap year ski instructor jobs here!
Everything else you need to know about gap year skiing
Costs. Ultimately, the cost of your gap year skiing will depend on if you decide to bum the powder days away on your own or if you become a ski instructor yourself. You can get paid to have all this fun, but keep in mind that the cost of living might be a bit more expensive than most other locations. Even though you’ll be making dough by cruising the mountains, it’s best to start saving asap. Start earning money for your ski instructor gap year and visit FundMyTravel.
Accommodations. Most programs will give you options to live in dorms or apartments on the ski resort. If you get hired on sooner than later, they’ll hook you up with great housing spots. If you’re interested in saving, you can always live off of the resort and sign a cheap apartment lease for a year. But living with your fellow ski bums—at a walking distance from work—would be quite the set-up.
Visas. Unless you live in the country you’ll be having your ski instructor gap year, you’ll absolutely need a visa. They’re a variety of visas out there, so call up your advisor and get their advice. You can usually fill out the necessary paperwork for your visa online, and then you have to visit your local consulate to apply for your visa in person. Find the nearest one near you in the GoAbroad embassy directory.
Safety. So mom always to you hold hand while crossing the street, but when traveling on your own, you need to have common sense too—no matter where you are. When skiing, make sure that you’re safe on the mountain, especially at night. It’s fun to take shortcuts and try out new tricks during the day, but once the sun sets, it can be the bad kind of dangerous. Make sure you’re never alone on the powder if you can help it.
GoAbroad's Inside Scoop
Load up on sunscreen! Even though it may be negative degrees outside, at the top of the mountain, the sun is still shining. People never realize it, but the solar waves are still very powerful, and can cause serious sunburns. Pack your own just in case you can’t get it easily in-country.
Oh yeah, also, say “Yes!” to every social or après ski. It’s the best way to meet people with similar passions as you, and to later see familiar faces on the mountain. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and start a conversation! Pro tip: people love warm chocolate cookies...
Alrighty, ski bums, what are you waiting for? The snow, the friends, and endless white memories are headed your way for the best gap year ski experiences! Imagine—every morning waking up to mountain vistas that reach the skies and air that is crisp and clear. If you don’t sign up for gap year ski instructor programs, I think I just might…

New Zealand is an amazing place, the sights and landscapes are absolutely incredible. From the time i arrived and even before i arrived i was guided through everything i needed for the trip and had things waiting for me. Although only a few weeks into my trip i feel that global work and travel have made this incredible trip feel amazing and i feel like I'm at home already.

I mainly used global work and travel to keep me on track for going to NZ. This was because I was already on a visa in another country not through glabal work and travel and I also wanted to meet/know people before hand. Global work and travel did both just swimmingly! I was able to meet the 5 other global work and travel people coming in to Auckland right when they arrived. I talked to 2 of them prior to me landing. We hung out and did activities everyday! It was cool to see pictures of the inclusion with All the Global work and travel people together. Even though our jobs are in different towns we still plan to meet up somewhere along the way! Also Hannah was very good at keeping me on track.

I booked pretty much everything with with Global Work and Travel which took a big stress off my shoulders. From the flights here which were really good to getting to the Attic it was really smooth. The Global team were really helpful and had good response times to any emails for questions. The team set me up with an interview for a job which I've now been at for almost a month and I'm loving it. I also decided to join the rugby team in the town I work and I'm really enjoying playing for them. I decided to keep the Sky walk in Auckland towards the end of my trip which I'm really happy i got the option to do. Overall I've had a really good experience in New Zealand and would highly recommend a visit.
Worth Every Penny

"For my first long-term international solo trip, Global Work & Travel has been such a reassuring asset that provided excellent support throughout the entire travel process. Without them, I would've hesitated at every step while planning my trip, questioning whether I checked every box I would need to or found the most suitable options. Their coordinators really streamlined the entire thing and set me up for success! Not only did they ensure that I followed a good time-frame to acquire all the necessary documentation, they would even arrange some of the transactions on my behalf after going over the service details and price with me, much of which I would have been poorly informed on otherwise. If you would prefer to obtain any of these things yourself, then they are more than willing to work with you. For example, you may want to secure a job and a place to stay way ahead of finalizing your trip as it was a bit nerve-racking having to wait until I was only a couple weeks out from my departure before they set up an interview. However, for me the most intimidating aspect of living abroad for an extended period is finding a reliable source of income. So I really appreciated how they work as liaisons for various businesses, though of course they can't work miracles as you'll still have to compete with other applicants. Many employers are looking to hire rather quickly and expect you to already have all that's required for you to begin working including your visa, bank account, and tax number. So GW&T gives you the best chance of landing a gig by ensuring you've covered all your bases, that you apply to opportunities relative to your experience and to companies that are familiar with hiring foreigners, and do so all on a timeline that's feasible for them to meet their workforce demands. Having put my complete trust in GW&T, it all worked out as they helped me find a real sweet position that fit my interests and came with accommodations! The initial hostel arrangement for when I first landed was also great and very convenient! They chose a clean, reputable place in a prime location and booked it alongside plenty of other travelers using their program so it was easy to make a lot of friends. Now that I've been through the planning procedure once myself, I could likely book another trip of this duration again on my own, but all the resources they provided and activities included were well worth it! I was able to learn about the culture and get a taste of what it has to offer while engaging in enjoyable experiences I likely wouldn't have bothered to organize personally. Although I can't guarantee you'll get as much as I did out of their services, I would definitely recommend them and would certainly work with them again myself!"

Global made planning my whole trip easier and less stressful. I didn't have to worry about where to find official documents or where I needed to go for insurance, flights, and immigration because they did that work and research for me. Megan my trip coordinator was always lovely to speak with and very helpful.

Easiest Decision I Ever Made
June 10, 2026by: Gabrielle G - CanadaProgram: Working Holiday in New Zealand | Your Kiwi Adventure
The sign up process was very easy, I had quite a bit of time to prepare for traveling to NZ. Upon getting here, my arrivals coordinator set up for me to do the Auckland bridge walk with AJ Hackett (10/10) would recommend doing that. As well as wine tasting on Waiheke island. I got a job in an awesome little lakeside town and have had the opportunity to go white water rafting with Kaitiaki Adventures (captain jack was awesome) and got to do the bungy swing in Taupo.

I appreciated how organized and well-structured the trip was. The itinerary was thoughtfully planned, and everything ran on schedule. My Trip Coordinator played a key role in making the experience smooth by providing timely updates, managing logistics efficiently, and being consistently available for any questions. Their professionalism made the trip significantly easier.
My Unforgettable experience in the Canadian Mountains
May 21, 2025by: Aron Horemans - BelgiumProgram: Pre-arranged Jobs in Canadian Summer and Winter Resorts
During my gap year, I had the incredible opportunity to work abroad in the Canadian mountains. Surrounded by amazing landscapes I gained hands-on experience in a dynamic environment. Whether assisting guests at a ski resort or living in the mountains, I developed valuable skills in teamwork, adaptability, and communication. The process for applying for an internship was made really easy as I was offered all the help I needed. This experience helped me grow personally but also professionally and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about doing an internship abroad.
My project in Namibia
August 12, 2024by: Emily Ormond - United KingdomI have recently come back from my gap year and while I was there I spent a month working on the relationships between humans and elephants. So why would I recommend Oyster? I am so glad I picked to do this project with Oyster because they made me feel very well taken care of and looked after me before and during the project. They talk you though everything you need to know before the project takes place and what clothes and necessities you may need to pack. So what does the project consist of? I would do this project a million times if I could, and if you don’t believe me lots of people who were doing the project had already done it before and had come back because of how much they enjoyed it. So the project is on a two week program and you have the option to stay from two weeks to 3 months. The first week is amazing because you build walls for the local community. Some days some of the locals will come and help, or a few kids will come and keep you company, that is amazing because you feel so immersed, it’s definitely a once in a lifetime experience. The second week is spent tracking elephants. This was my favourite out of the two because you learn all about the elephants foot prints. We also managed to see a two day old elephant which we were lucky enough to name !!! So why pick this project? I think this project and Oyster have a lot of selling points. For starters Oyster takes very good care of you and help you organise yourself before the project starts so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Secondly you are in the middle of the desert, I don’t think you could get anymore rural than that. You don’t really have much service so it’s lovely to disconnect for two weeks. You get to spend some time with lovely people who you may not meet on a day to day basis, people from different countries, locals, and different ages. You camp under the stars which is also amazing. Overall I would always recommend this amazing project, such a special experience!!
Wonderful to read about your experience, thank you Emily! The Oyster Team
An amazing experience!!!
December 15, 2023by: Kayleigh Falconer - AustraliaProgram: Winter Gap Year - Become a Ski or Snowboard Instructor!
The Slopes at Castle Mountain Resort in Alberta are of great quality! You won't get bored here, regardless of your skiing/board skills. The powder in the 2022/2023 season was off the charts ? Having skilled instructors help you though getting your level 1 & 2 was so helpful and having a helping hand when you first arrive in Canada was amazing and so easy! 100% recommend this program ?
Kayleigh, we’re so glad to have supported you on the journey to becoming an instructor at Castle Mountain Resort. It’s our mission to make this process smooth and provide high quality training. It’s fantastic to know that our team made a positive impact on your development and that you had a lot of fun. Thank you for recommending our program! -The EA Team.
Amazing experience. Professional and helpful company.
June 30, 2023by: Bailey Crossland - EnglandThe last few weeks I have been travelling around South East Asia with Oyster Worldwide, completing my Gold The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. This has been a truly once in a lifetime experience, meeting many new people from all around the world and learning about the Asian culture and lifestyle. From volunteering at an ethical elephant sanctuary in Chaing Mai, Thailand to partying on a yacht in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, I enjoyed every second of it. Oyster Worldwide have been super professional and helpful throughout the whole experience and made a complex and daunting trip, a breeze in the park!

Sounds like you made the most of your time Bailey and had a wonderful tour - thanks for sharing!
Epic winter season
November 26, 2019by: Mark Crichton - United KingdomProgram: Become a Ski Instructor in Canada - Training + Job Included
I’d always wanted to do a ski season but had never considered becoming an instructor as I didn’t think I was good enough. As soon as I heard you could get all the training you needed and a guaranteed job I was in! The whole process with EA was awesome, from speaking with their training consultants on the phone to finally arriving in Canada meeting the program reps and all the other interns. Almost instantly I had a massive group of new mates and over the course of the season we became a weirdly dysfunctional family! The training we received was incredible, i’d always thought I was a decent enough skier but the improvements we all made in just 3/4 weeks at the start (and over the course of the season) was insane! Would happily do this all again if I could!
Teaching in Chile
August 06, 2019by: Amy Green - United KingdomI had a really great time as a volunteer teaching assistant at a school in Coyhaique, Chile. I was teaching a huge range of ages (4-17) and it was great to be able to interact with classes at various stages of their English development. The teachers I was supporting were amazing and very eager for the help, particularly with the younger years and keeping their interest. I absolutely loved my time living with my host family as they were so welcoming. Being able to speak a little Spanish already definitely helped my integration but they were also incredibly helpful in helping me improve and understanding of my many mistakes! Coyhaique in itself is a smallish town with not too much to offer however there are two national parks surrounding it with some good hikes. It is easy to travel out of Coyhaique by bus (just book in advance) either going north or south and getting to Balmaceda airport is also simple should you wish to go further afield. Having people on the ground in Coyhaique was encouraging as you knew you had support should you need it but we didn't interact much. The Spanish lessons were fine but I feel they would be more helpful to someone of a lower level, as for me, I just needed to practice speaking so the best thing was just being with my host family! Overall a good experience and I'm so glad I did it.
Thank you so much for leaving a review!
Best decision I ever made!
February 01, 2019by: Lauren Underhill - United KingdomI had just finished my A Levels and wasn’t sure whether uni was an option for me - so a gap year was on the cards. My friend and I had a passion for animals so decided to go on a trip to see some of the worlds most magnificent. After lots of research, Oysters promise of responsible travel and support was what made us sure they were the best company to go with. I went to South Africa for 4 weeks to volunteer as a wildlife conservationist with the Big 5. I cannot even begin to describe how much I loved the programme. I got to see and experience a culture and lifestyle I never thought possible, made life long friends all over the world and have memories to last a life time. Oyster provided non-stop support as soon as I applied until the very moment I returned home. It would take me a whole book to write all the amazing things I saw and experienced and why Oyster Worldwide was the best choice - cliché as it sounds, taking a gap year with Oyster was the best decision I have ever made and I cannot wait to get on a plane to another one of their awesome projects.
Many thanks for taking the time to review us!

Oyster Team
Mislead
February 21, 2018by: Sam Smith - JapanProgram: Winter Gap Year - Become a Ski or Snowboard Instructor!
Though I've had a great time in Japan meeting great people and getting the opportunity to ski amazing powder I don't feel as if I got what I paid for. Though I have thoroughly enjoyed ski instructing in the few months I've been here I was less to believe I'd have work and accommodation November through April. In reality though mine and the majority of the EA staffs contracts have not been extended due to lack of work available. I now can not afford to stay in japan until the date of my flight I was told to book in mid April and can not afford to stay on the meal plan not ski. Great few months but now feel as if I've been left out to dry march through April.
Trip of a lifetime! - Cypress mountain, Vancouver
December 07, 2017by: Mitch Cartwright - AustraliaProgram: Become a Ski Instructor in Canada - Training + Job Included
A piece of advice, if like me you were looking into this program but not sure if you are gonna do it, just take the plunge and do it, you won't regret it! Cypress is a beautiful mountain with a huge variety of terrain and mountain views on one side, and ocean views on the other, truly no other resort is quite like it, as for EA, these guys are with you from start to finish, making sure you have visas, accommodation, orientations all set up on arrival, they give you everything you need and are willing to help out as much as they can I cannot recommend this program highly enough, it's incredible and if you can, you should do it
