Why Earn a Degree in Social Sciences
Individual people and whole societies are wildly diverse. Each country offers a fascinating array of knowledge about its people and its cultural, social, political and geographical history. No matter if you are studying anthropology, psychology, or economics, getting a degree in social sciences translates to a higher exposure to a wider range of experiences
As cross-disciplinary as social sciences can be, every aspect of living and studying abroad offers a multi-faceted worldview. Whether it’s a general social sciences degree or a specific study in a field, the world offers complex layers of relations between these areas, much like experiences in everyday life will mingle and affect one another. Looking at the past through archeology and anthropology can give you a chance to apply what you learn to the future, say through finance or politics.
By getting an international degree in social sciences, you get a first-hand understanding of how different society functions. Both in and out of the classroom, you’ll get to see how every action affects the socio-political climate of the land. This knowledge and experience helps you make better decisions when later in life you are given the chance to make effective changes.
Internships and practical applications completed abroad also amount to some major brownie points when it comes to future job applications. It’s one thing to study population movements and another to live them. Job recruiters value first-hand experience and appreciate the personal growth that naturally occurs overseas from being thrown into new situations.
Where to Earn a Social Science Degree
Social sciences encompasses everything human, so you can literally study social sciences anywhere in the world and each place offers its own distinct way of looking at things. Due to its cross-disciplinary nature, not one place alone can be said to be the best place to study social sciences. Sometimes, it requires delving into different fields or visiting different countries may be the exact thing needed to understand a subject.
Some of the best places to study social sciences are the ones that play a major role in shaping the world. As such, the USA is a hoppin’ place to get a degree in social science. There are a multitude of universities offering both a general social sciences degree to specific degrees such as linguistics, psychology, sociology, etc. The major players are Harvard, Stanford, and Yale. The research options are numerous too! For hands-on work, this is a good place to be.
If you are interested in studying politics or finance, the UK is the way to go. Its universities and research options provide the best academic and social experience possible, especially in fields such as politics, philosophies, and economics (PPE). Universities and research programs play a major role in shaping not just the socio-political climate of UK, but the entire world. Nothing opens a career door faster than saying you studied in Oxford!
For a degree in subjects such as humanities, public administration, and psychology, cities such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam offer exciting programs. The Netherlands have been at the forefront of social issues and international debates for decades, and this is often where new ideologies are born. See what all the buzz is about before it spreads!
Social Science Degree Programs
Most universities offer a degree in the social sciences field in one form or another. Social science is vastly interdisciplinary, and you can customize the subjects you wish to learn so as to better suit your career goals. Social sciences is a field of study that includes various subjects, such as economics, political science, human geography, demography, sociology, and theology. It also relates into various humanities fields like archeology, history, linguistics, and some of its branches merge with even natural sciences and computer sciences.
You can broadly learn about the subject by getting a bachelor’s in social science, which touches upon the many different fields it holds. If you’re already certain which specific field you’re interested in, you can earn a BA or a BSc, depending on your subject. Some universities even have a degree for individual subjects, such as a bachelor’s in economics.
Getting a bachelor’s in social science also provides strong groundwork for going on to do graduate level programs in fields such as law or medicine — in the same country or an entirely new one. Investigate specifics, such as Greek literature or Egyptian anthropology, with a master’s or a doctoral degree in the various fields of social science.
To study social sciences at university level, a high school diploma or a GED is enough, though some programs require college level coursework. Throughout the course, you need to complete research projects, practical experiences, and internships. Just think of what this translates to — demographic or environmental research on Caribbean islands or longitudinal studies and survey polls about the current political issues in Turkey.
GoAbroad Insider Tips
Discovering a new culture and its societal implications. Visiting a country as a tourist is one thing, but when you are getting a social sciences degree abroad, you experience society differently and gain a new perspective on your own culture. This is not limited to culturally significant subjects either — even studying finance in another country teaches all sorts of cultural implications.
Beyond theory and into practice. Getting a degree abroad in social sciences allows you to study and understand problems inherent in a particular society and offers you a chance to go beyond the books and do some real change. Many of the research programs and internships offer a chance to help the local society in some way; rack up karma points while having the time of your life.
Interconnectivity. While the cross-disciplinary aspect of social science is usually an asset, sometimes taking a broad course might result in you being confused within the web of interconnectivity. This is especially hard when getting a degree abroad, as you might not be as familiar with the particular society and getting into new disciplines might lead you down avenues you didn’t intend to go down.
Getting a degree abroad in social sciences is perhaps one of the best ways to learn about both the society and yourself. Humans are complex, so learning about them and what makes a society tick may be a daunting prospect, but one full of promises of adventure!

I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.
