A Guide to Volunteering in Youth Development Abroad
Why Volunteer Abroad
There are few things more rewarding than seeing the joy on a child’s face after they have accomplished a new goal or knowing that you in some way contributed to a child achieving success. Knowing that you helped a shy child overcome stage fright through dance or resolve conflict with their peers through baseball can provide you with tremendous pride in having helped foster essential life skills in young people through fun, engaging activities.
Youth development projects use thoughtful, interactive activities to engage kids with their peers, and caring adult role models to teach skills that are essential for success in school and in life. Programs dedicated to youth help them build leadership and problem-solving skills, promote teamwork and communication, and encourage the development of a positive attitude and strong work ethic. Volunteering in youth development projects abroad will provide you with the opportunity to be a caring adult in a child’s life when they might not have someone to fill in those shoes, helping them to realize their potential, create attainable goals, and achieve success along the way.
Providing this type of developmental support abroad, particularly in rural areas that may not have access to many resources, helps to instill important values in kids who may grow up to become leaders, working to make widespread improvements in their community. In this way, youth development projects are especially impactful in small, remote villages, where they can serve as catalysts for future community development and change.
Locations
When selecting a location for your youth development volunteer program, you may want to consider ways you can combine a location’s economic and/or social needs with your own passions and skills to create lasting change.
South Africa is home to the highest proportion of adults living with HIV; just over 19 percent of the country’s adult population is infected with HIV. It is estimated that there are over 3.7 million orphaned children in the country, over half of which resulted from deaths due to this devastating disease. Many youth development programs in South Africa devote themselves to the care and wellbeing of orphaned children, fostering safe spaces that promote independence and resiliency in the face of adversity.
With hundreds of gangs located among its largest cities, youth development projects in Colombia are vital to the safety and wellbeing of the country’s young people too. Youth development programs in Colombia often focus on academic preparation, language instruction, and technological literacy. Volunteers can help young people develop confidence in their schoolwork, as well a sense of responsibility, while promoting the value of education and staying in school, all of which contribute to lower dropout rates and levels of gang involvement.
In India, a country where the literacy rate for women hovers around 65 percent, women’s empowerment projects are key to building young women’s self-esteem and independence, and promoting the importance of education for women. Youth development projects in India range from providing childcare so teen mothers so they can focus on their studies to discussion groups on employment opportunities, education, and women’s rights.
Youth Development Projects Abroad
Youth development projects abroad are as diverse in scope as the volunteers who contribute to them. Those who want to volunteer in youth development abroad can, therefore, search through projects based on their own interests and easily find a placement that is right for them.
If soccer is your thing, you can seek community teams seeking to improve their skills, while cultivating leadership skills and promoting teamwork. If you prefer the arts, check out opportunities to work with after-school programs ranging from music to painting to performing arts, through which youth can simultaneously develop their sense of self-expression and communication skills. If gardening is more your niche look for programs that teach young people about sustainable gardening, either for their own benefit or to sell for profit, while learning about entrepreneurship through the creation of a small business.
Regardless of the type of youth development project you pursue, previous experience working with children and teens will most likely come in handy, although it may not be required. However, obviously there are exceptions; youth participants will most definitely get more out of a photography class taught by an avid photographer (even if a non-professional), than from someone who has never picked up a camera. Yet, it should be noted that passion goes a long way in contributing meaningfully to a youth development program abroad. Don’t shy away from projects that might seem slightly out of your comfort zone, but do use your better judgment when considering which youth development project is right for you.
Due to the diverse nature of youth development projects, volunteer placements can range from a few days to several months, or even year-long volunteer positions: the length of your stay will vary depending on the type of project in which you engage. That said, chances are, the more time you have to spend in your placement, the closer you will become with participants, and the deeper impact you will have.
Benefits & Challenges
The absolute best thing about volunteering for a youth development project is getting to make a difference in the life of a child. That’s what makes volunteer programs in youth development so popular!
Additionally, volunteering with youth development projects can be beneficial for your own future employment opportunities. These types of projects provide volunteers with valuable experience working with youth in professional settings, especially in a mentorship role, which can translate well to resumes. If you aspire to advance your career in a given field, volunteering in youth development will boost your credentials by showcasing your talents as a coach, teacher, workshop facilitator, entrepreneur, etc.
However, with youth development projects, you won’t always see the fruits of your labor. Unlike construction volunteer projects which allow you to watch your work come to life, your impact on program participants may not necessarily be as immediate or as visible. With some kids, you will be able to see that you are making a difference in their lives right away – through their smiles, the way they interact with you, and the way they may use what you have taught them in your presence. With other kids, you might not see the difference while you are there, but your impact on their lives will most likely be felt long after you’re gone.
Many of these kids come from challenging backgrounds and living environments. It can be difficult to see their living conditions. You might doubt yourself and your contributions, eventually concluding “I’m JUST coaching basketball, maybe I should be building a school or teaching a class.” While it is great if your experience springboards you to consider other volunteer opportunities, it is important to recognize the immense value of youth development projects. Many of these kids may not have strong role models in their lives. Your contribution and teachings can go a long way to providing them with a positive example of the skills they can develop in a given area, and the type of person they may aspire to be.
Youth development opportunities allow volunteers to interact and connect with kids in meaningful ways. If you’re looking for a way to impact young people’s lives while having fun and sharing your unique talents, abilities, and passions, a youth development volunteer position abroad may be the perfect opportunity for you.

Amazing Learning Experience
September 08, 2026by: Yadira Ortega - United StatesProgram: Volunteer to Teach English & Study Arabic in Germany
I came to the Excellence Center as a volunteer Photographer and was amazed to see how an establishment that started from humble beginnings has become a safe space for refugees with community and compassion at the forefront of its daily operations. You can learn either Arabic, English or German here without feeling embarrassed about any language barriers. The center provides weekly community activities in which you get to experience cultures and customs and in the end you most likely make a new friend. The staff here is amazing, very friendly, inviting, supportive and best of all, flexible! I studied Beginner Arabic here and loved the fact that the classes ranged from single to small group settings only, make the learning curve feel easier to overcome. There were opportunities to visit other German towns with a teacher as a tour guide and those were very fun and exciting to be able to join. I definitely recommend this center for anyone wanting to learn either of the languages mentioned above. The teachers here are excellent and provided so many immersion opportunities!!!

My volunteering experience in Sri Lanka
September 07, 2026by: ANTONINO LA PAGLIA - ItalyProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
My volunteering experience in Sri Lanka with International Volunteer was truly one of the most rewarding and enriching experiences of my life. From the very first moment I expressed interest in the program, the organization supported me step by step until my departure, making the entire process smooth, clear, and stress-free. The team was always available to answer my questions, provide guidance, and ensure that I felt fully prepared for my journey. Their professionalism, dedication, and genuine care gave me confidence and peace of mind throughout the whole preparation phase. The teaching project I participated in was absolutely wonderful. It was an incredible opportunity to work with enthusiastic students, immerse myself in the local culture, and make a meaningful contribution to the community. Every day was filled with learning, personal growth, and unforgettable moments. I am extremely grateful to International Volunteer for creating such a well-organized and impactful experience. I highly recommend this organization to anyone looking for a volunteer program abroad. Their support, commitment, and the quality of the projects they offer make them an outstanding choice for volunteers. Thank you, International Volunteer, for helping me live such an amazing adventure and for making a real difference in the lives of others while also changing my own life for the better.

September 05, 2026by: Ziyi Pan - ChinaProgram: Volunteer in Latin America! Costa Rica, Guatemala, & Peru
As a 16-year-old traveling alone in Costa Rica, Maximo Nivel made me feel safe, supported, and welcomed throughout my entire experience. The staff and my host family gave me all the support and guidance I needed, which made being away from home so much easier. I especially loved how Maximo brings everyone together, allowing me to meet so many amazing people from different cultures, countries, and backgrounds. This has been one of the best experiences of my life so far, and as my first solo trip, I feel like I’ve grown so much as a person. I gained more confidence, independence, and a new appreciation for different cultures and perspectives. I truly don’t think I would have had this experience or grown as much without Maximo Nivel.

Zanzibar IVHQ
September 03, 2026by: Matteo Vinicio Viccardi - ItalyProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I had an amazing experience with IVHQ during the Coastal and Marine Conservation programme in Zanzibar. From the application process to the end of my stay, everything was well organised and I always felt supported. The application process was simple and straightforward, and the IVHQ team provided all the information I needed before travelling. Communication was clear and any questions I had were answered quickly. The pre-departure information was especially useful because it helped me understand what to expect and prepare properly for the experience. Once I arrived in Zanzibar, the local team was welcoming, friendly and helpful. The orientation was well organised and gave me a good introduction to the local culture, the area and the programme. I always felt that there was someone I could rely on if I needed help. The Coastal and Marine Conservation project was definitely the highlight of my experience. I had the opportunity to take part in activities focused on marine conservation and learn more about the importance of protecting Zanzibar’s coastal ecosystems. It was very rewarding to see how our activities could contribute, even in a small way, to the local environment. The experience was not only educational but also practical, allowing me to get involved rather than simply learning about conservation from a theoretical perspective. The accommodation was comfortable and suitable for a volunteer programme. Living together with other international volunteers was also a great part of the experience. I met people from different countries and backgrounds, and many of them became good friends. Sharing everyday life, activities and free time with other volunteers made the experience even more memorable. The meals were another positive aspect. The food was generally tasty, fresh and varied, with a good opportunity to experience local flavours and dishes. The staff were also very attentive and accommodating. I also really appreciated the opportunity to experience Zanzibar beyond the project itself. The island has incredible beaches, landscapes and a unique culture, and having the opportunity to interact with local people made the experience much more meaningful. Overall, I would absolutely recommend IVHQ and the Coastal and Marine Conservation programme in Zanzibar. It is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to combine travelling, meeting people from all over the world and doing something meaningful for the environment. I came home with new knowledge, unforgettable memories and a much greater appreciation for marine conservation. Thank you to the entire IVHQ team and the local staff in Zanzibar for making this such a special experience. I would definitely consider doing another IVHQ programme in the future!

Working with kids in the Incan Capital
September 03, 2026by: Keelin Wittkamp - United StatesProgram: Working with Kids—Volunteer in Peru!
My experience in Peru has been absolutely amazing! Working with the kids has been such a wonderful experience, not only do I get a ton of new friends but I get to learn with them. The teachers are so wonderful and are very patient with my Spanish. The kids are the sweetest ever and are so eager to learn. I get to work with the 3 year olds and it is such a rewarding experience. I am learning so much in the classroom and the kids help me with my Spanish so much. Overall, I recommend working on this project to really feel like you are part of the community and see the culture first hand. Exploring cusco has also been so rewarding. I get to take the bus to my placement everyday which is super cool because I am with all of the locals and get to see real life peru. I am grateful to be experiencing this more as a local rather than a tourist. My host family has been super kind and makes me feel like family. I have felt extremely safe and can even walk around at night by myself with no worries. My host siblings and I have also often talked about how the food has never been bad since we´ve been here. This country is so so beautiful and I cannot wait to keep exploring all that it has to offer.

My best weeks
September 02, 2026by: Liel Naumov - IsraelProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I had the time of my life. At first i was a really scared kid, afraid to even speak and then one night i sat with Sarah, my Coordinator and she let me feel that talking with other people is not that scary even if u have a thick accent. And i’ll never forget that night because it gave me the push to talk with people. Everybody were heartwarming, always listening. The day care was amazing, i cried so hard when i had to leave the school and also when i needed to leave the house it self. Best weeks of my life.

I had a fantastic experience.
September 01, 2026by: Natan Schwartzman - United StatesI did sports education volunteering in Kenya for 7 weeks, and the program was everything I was looking for and more. The hostess at the apartment was super kind, the other volunteers were really friendly, and the volunteer placement was awesome. I really felt that I was able to immerse myself in the Kenyan culture, and I learned a ton. Go in with an internal locus of control, and you will have an amazing time!
An eye-opening experience I'd recommend to anyone
August 28, 2026by: Harper Dunne - United StatesProgram: Volunteer in Bocas del Toro, Panama
I cannot recommend working with Give and Surf more. Overall the experience is fulfilling and super fun! A huge part of the success of my visit was the flexibility and supportiveness of the staff - they make traveling abroad and living in a new place a really smooth experience! Another thing that is extremely important to me when traveling or working with organizations abroad is that the organization is ethical, and I can unequivocally say that you can feel good about working with Give and Surf because it is community embedded, in it for the long haul, stable, and collaborative. The work they do is greatm and the experience they provide is worth it!
It’s and incredible experience, I would totally recommend it
August 28, 2026by: Andrea Funes - SpainStaying in a local house is something you have to experience at least once in life, also have the ability to see how life works in another country and the local people, is an amazing way to find another version of yourself, and learn how you can live the life with “pura vida”. It was also too beautiful the volunteering with the kids, you are always welcome by them and they are expecting you with a lots of love and happiness. The only thing I don’t like about this experience is saying goodbye and had to come back home. Also I recommend takes some tours because you get to know better this beautiful country!! (Specially Nauyaca Waterfall tour if you like risks)

An organization that stays with you
August 25, 2026by: Georgie Hawfield - United StatesProgram: Volunteer in Bocas del Toro, Panama
Give & Surf is such a special organization, and I’m incredibly grateful to have been able to volunteer with them multiple times. Every visit has been such a rewarding experience—not only because of the incredible work they’re doing, but because of the amazing people who make the program what it is. I’ve formed genuine friendships with several of the teachers and staff, and some have become lifelong friends. There’s such a strong sense of community, kindness, and purpose within Give & Surf. It’s one of those organizations that stays with you long after you leave, and I feel very lucky to have been a small part of it. I would highly recommend getting involved or volunteering if you ever have the opportunity!

Incredible experience
August 25, 2026by: Martina Gasparotto - ItalyProgram: IVHQ Teaching English Project in San Jose, Costa Rica
IVHQ did a wonderful job in organizing a beautiful volunteer program in Costa Rica. I took part in the teaching project in San José for two weeks, and I was welcomed into a loving home, with delicious food and several roommates (fellow volunteers from all over the world). The locals are so welcoming and sweet; teaching them english was the best experience ever, and they taught me a lot about life as well. IVHQ sent me multiple emails before, during and after the program to make sure that everything was going alright and I received my volunteer certificate once the project was over. Absolutely recommend!
