During my two weeks in south africa i was able to see the true struggles that locals face, which you don’t always see on social media it felt amazing to be able to be part of a program which helps the people who need it most out. Furthermore during the program it was incredible to be able to form new friendships especially as a solo traveler, we were able to have help from the local team in planning trips out and have transport everywhere to help us see all the sights and african culture.

A Valuable and Inspiring Volunteer Journey

My experience volunteering on a childcare project with International Volunteer HQ was incredibly rewarding. I spent two weeks there, and it quickly became clear that this was more than just a short trip—it was something meaningful. The time I spent with the children was the highlight of the experience. Each day involved different activities, and I really valued the opportunity to interact, support, and simply be present with them. Their positivity and openness made every moment feel worthwhile. What I appreciated most was how this experience allowed me to step out of my usual routine and focus on giving back. It helped me realise how even small contributions can have an impact. At the same time, it encouraged personal growth and a better understanding of different environments and people. The program was well structured, and the support from the team made everything run smoothly. I always felt comfortable and guided when needed. Overall, it was a very enriching experience that left a strong impression on me. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to volunteer and make a difference.

The most amazing and fulfilling experience! would do it all over again

I want to begin by expressing what an incredibly fulfilling and life-changing experience these past two weeks have been. I had the privilege of joining the childcare program in Arusha, Tanzania, and from start to finish, everything exceeded my expectations. From the moment I registered and paid my program fees, the level of communication and support I received was outstanding. As this was both my first solo trip and my first volunteer experience, having clear guidance and reassurance was extremely important to me. Every question I had—no matter how small—was answered promptly and thoroughly, which gave me so much confidence leading up to my departure. Despite the time difference, the team remained consistently responsive and helpful. I was provided with detailed, step-by-step instructions on everything from applying for my visa to preparing the necessary documents, along with a comprehensive program guide outlining essential items to bring, vaccination information, and what to expect at the volunteer house. Every detail was thoughtfully covered, leaving me feeling fully prepared. As my trip approached, the Zoom call was another highlight—it addressed additional questions and helped me feel even more at ease. The level of organization and care put into every stage of the process truly set this experience apart. This journey has impacted me in ways I cannot fully put into words. It has opened my eyes, filled my heart, and inspired me to continue volunteering as a meaningful part of my life. I am so grateful for this opportunity and excited to share my experience with others. I sincerely hope to continue participating in future programs and making a difference through this incredible organization.

My time volunteering in Cape Town with IVHQ was truly life-changing. Working with the children was the highlight. Their energy and resilience are unforgettable. The program also excels at fostering community. I met incredible people from around the world, and sharing a living space made the experience even richer. From impactful volunteer work to exploring the stunning city and coastline, every moment felt meaningful. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to give back and grow!

Volunteering in South Africa was one of the most rewarding and eye-opening experiences of my life. I worked in childcare, and while entering disadvantaged communities can feel overwhelming at first, the local staff provided incredible support, education, and guidance every step of the way. They helped me process the emotions that came with witnessing inequality and hardship while also showing me the strength, resilience, and joy within these communities. Safety was a top priority, and I never once felt unsafe. The staff ensured we were well-prepared, educated about local customs and realities, and always looked after. Their kindness, patience, and willingness to answer questions made a world of difference, allowing me to focus on the work and the connections I was building. Seeing the impact we could have, even in small ways, was truly life-changing. The children’s laughter, the warmth of the community, and the bonds I formed with fellow volunteers and staff will stay with me forever. If you’re thinking about volunteering, I highly recommend this program—it will challenge you, inspire you, and leave you with a new perspective on the world. IVHQ prepared me for everything. While some parts were a shock at first, it was nothing that wasn’t already discussed before arrival. I felt prepared months in advance and my program managers support was unmatched. I would highly recommend IVHQ for any volunteering program abroad.

Exploring with reliable partners for kids' chance

I love being greeted with smiles and hugs everyday by the little kids. It was very important to me to have a better understanding on how educational projects can give kids a chance in risky neighbourhoods. Your experience can't go wrong if you choose a reliable partner, start with a less complex program that will make you feel safer and treat this as an opportunity to explore the country as well.

Just do it - changing perspectives

I love when one morning we were hiking all together and we reached the top of the mountain. That moment was very intense and emotional as none of the kids or volunteers gave up despite being a very tough hike. It was very impressive seeing how the townships near Cape Town look like and thinking about the kids living there. That made me think about tough things those kids are probably passing through every day of their lives, I was speechless and in tears but at the same time I was aware that our program was helping them somehow. Just do it, is the best thing can happen in your young age, and it will change your way to see the world.

Universal love and belonging through IVHQ's safe and welcoming experience

IVHQ made preparing for out trip abroad so easy! The guide tells you step by step what needs to me done, gives you correct links to get it done, and offers personal support throughout the entire process! The local team on the ground in Tanzania was wonderful! From the minute you walked out of the airport and saw the driver with an IVHQ sign, to meeting the volunteer coordinator and feeling like you’ve known her your whole life, to all the mamas who took care of you in the houses, absolutely everything was thought of and communicated to you. IVHQ took all of the uncertainty that you might have about traveling to a foreign country and immediately made you feel welcomed and safe! My daughter and I volunteered at a daycare/preschool and were overjoyed with our experience! The director and staff were very welcoming and enthusiastic about our presence. We were able to dive right in on day one and assist the teachers and play with the kids! We enjoyed every minute we had with the children! We stayed at on of the volunteer houses in Arusha and we were very pleased with our accommodations. My daughter and I were in a bedroom with two sets of bunk beds (4 people) and a bathroom. All of the beds were made up with everything we needed (sheets, blankets, pillows, and mosquito nets). The bathrooms had American style toilets and hot showers. The mama provided three hot meals a day and coffee and tea. The most incredible part of staying in the house was meeting other people from all over the world who were there to volunteer as well! The food was fantastic! We were a little nervous about what the food would be like and whether or not we would get sick…however our food was terrific! The mama’s really can cook! Everything was so fresh and delicious! All of the interactions with the people were incredible! Everyday was a new experience with the people who we volunteered with in the community and with the people who lived in our house with us. There was always someone who wanted to do something. Never a dull moment. I have met so many incredible people in my two weeks that it was hard to say goodbye. I've realizes that no matter our differences in culture and language and lifestyle, that love is universal! People just want to be acknowledged and loved and talked to and heard and helped and belong! I felt so blessed to be able to volunteer in Arusha and be welcomed and immersed into their community! IVHQ provides you with the structure and foundation that will ensure that you are safe. The communities they partner with are well established and welcoming. You will only ever regret not going sooner.

IVHQ's guidance was very helpful and easy to understand. At my placement, I love playing with children and eating lunch together. It was kind of different from my country style so it was super fun. I could meet so many kind of people from around world and it was awesome to learn from their experiences too. They inspired me a lot and I was really happy to volunteer with them.

Everything was sorted out for me before I went on the trip, which put me in a comfortable position. When I was not sure of the specifics with certain aspects of the trip, I sent out an email to my Program manager and received the answer within days. The local team was honestly better than I could have hoped. Everyone was so kind and helpful, I felt that I was in good hands throughout the entire journey. I really want to come join this project in the near future. I will remember the kids and this time forever. I am so happy that I went through with this. The volunteer accommodation was amazing, clean, great food, and overall the location was unbeatable. The cook was extremely skilled at her job, cooking South African dishes as well. Everything was delicious and no complaints on my end. My favorite moment on the program was gifting the children shoes and bags. They really needed them and to see the smiles on their faces as the revived them was such a beautiful moment. Seeing where the kids came from had the biggest impact on me. Because they come from nothing and they still manage to carry on with their lives in a way most could not in America. It showed me how grateful I should be of all of the blessing I have and to keep going back to South Africa and other places to help in any way possible. If you volunteer through a reputable organization as IVHQ you would meet great people and have a wonderful experience in whichever program you chose.

An incredible, positive, safe and fun experience

IVHQ preparation was very detailed and any questions I did have were answered promptly and thoroughly by my Program Manager. The local team in South Africa is incredible! The coordinators were so kind, approachable and easy going - they looked after us very well and provided us such a great, positive, safe and fun time. The volunteer accommodation was comfortable and safe, no one has access to the accommodation except staff and volunteers. Chefs were incredible, food was very nice and well prepared. We were asked who would be home for meals and their was plenty of food provided accordingly. With the kids my favourite experience was watching how much they were willing to try anything and help each other achieve goals - climbing the Mountain with the kids was a challenge but watching them support and help each other the whole way up became a highlight for me very fast. Going into volunteering I didn’t realise the impact it would not only make to others but the impact it would have on me. The kids and the people in South Africa have genuinely changed my life for the better, hearing the stories, seeing their homes and then seeing the way they act, their smiles, how caring the kids are will stay with me forever. I realised very fast that it’s not about making a massive difference to everyone, if you can help just one person realise their worth and that they matter and can do great things, that’s all that matters.

I just got back from my two week volunteering program with IVHQ and it was amazing, here I was able to see a new country and work with the locals. Would recommend! I was able to meet the other volunteers who came from all over the world and work with the most adorable children and amazing teachers. It is the best feeling and it doesn’t feel like work but rather shear enjoyment!

Life-changing SA trip

Traveling to South Africa was the best, most life changing experience of my life thus far. At first, I was very unsure and nervous about traveling to a foreign country all by myself but after preparing and going through each step on IVHQ i felt a lot better. Upon arrival I was immediately greeted by 5 other girls in the program, all just as nervous as me but after just an hour we had become best friends. I met people on this trip that I will remember forever and made connections that are unforgettable. I felt very submersed in the culture and the life that is lived in SA. It was truly amazing to be able to work with disadvantaged children and really try and make a difference. I recommend IVHQ to all of my friends and family.

Seriously the best experience in my life. Have an open mind and I assure you you will have a blast. Be prepared to meet people from over the world and most importantly emerge and respect the local culture. Don’t think twice when volunteering,, do it and stay as long as you can you won’t regret it. Some people on my program were not pleased about the program they chose so make a wise selection. If you have donde it before you will enjoy it more. I personally did childcare and I loved every second of it.

Volunteering 6 months in SA

I volunteered for 6 months in South Africa with Ivhq and it was the best decisions i could have made. I just finished high school and even though all my friends were starting University in fall, I wanted to travel and to see a little bit more of the world. I worked in a daycare center in a township called Capricorn and the kids i worked with were so amazing! Not being able to see them every day breaks my heart and i wish i could go back again. During my time in South Africa i met amazing friends (Volunteers and Kids) and i know i will be in contact with most for a very long time. Volunteering and experience a culture so different from mine really helped me grow a bit as a person and also made me really grateful for everything i was given. I really recommend volunteering because it can help you grow as a person while experiencing a different culture and seeing amazing new places.

Thanks for your reviews Anna! I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed your time on the program, and hope this break, before beginning university, has helped you a little bit to decide what you want to do in the future. I am sure that the children miss you as much as you them, and thanks for just being generally awesome! ^Claire - IVHQ South Africa Program Manager

One of my close friends came to South Africa and went through a similar organization and she recommended IVHQ. Typically, we wake up at around like 6 to 7:30 and then Karl picks us up and drives us to daycare. And we have morning routine go through certain activities, snack time, lunch. Then they take a nap. Karl picks up back up and we go home and have lunch. Volunteers just need to be really open-minded and try and help as much as you can with the kids. Everyone is so awesome.
