Women Legal Aid and Human Rights Center in Arusha,Tanzania

International human rights include the right to work, to an adequate standard of living, to participate in cultural and political life, to education, and to freedom of religion. Even though Tanzania has ratified some human rights conventions, they are far from complying with them all in practice. A human rights center in Arusha run by a small, private NGO aims to provide legal aid and counseling services to poor and disadvantaged women and children in both rural and urban areas. It operates by conducting seminars, workshops, camps, and conferences as well as organizes legal aid, socio-economic support, and human rights education at the center and in the media. The Center strives to help as many people as possible but focuses primarily on women. Depending on your experience, education, and interests, you will be involved in various activities. The longer you stay, the more interesting your tasks will be. This program is open to both volunteers and interns. We welcome participants with a background or experience in law and human rights.

Medical Assistance and Outreach in Arusha

The placement is with a medical clinic or hospital, depending on your previous experience and training. Activities typically include shadowing doctors and other healthcare workers, observing how the healthcare system in Tanzania works, and performing basic care for patients under supervision. Take on a general support role as directed by a clinic or hospital staff. As a step contributing to the advancement of the equipment, appliances, facilities, and quality of these hospitals, we charge an extra 100 USD for these placements – a one-time fee throughout your time on the program. This is directly transferred to the institutions and centers to develop their facilities and service provision. One to two times per week, we perform medical outreach with a local organization. This involves traveling to a rural village, typically over rough dirt roads. We either visit several homes and provide medical treatment to local families or travel to one location where families come to us. This program is funded by volunteers. There is a $100 contribution given directly to the center by the volunteer.

Take me back

February 24, 2026by: Amber Wardle - England

Program: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!

10

From the start to finish, I felt supported from all the staff. Safety was a priority in South Africa and they ensured that these were remembered whilst we went out and enjoyed ourselves! The school was absolutely amazing and I loved the class and teachers I worked with. After programme, we had so much time to go and explore the local area of muizenburg and even head into the city of Cape Town to explore. It was importantly to follow the house rules as they kept you safe however I never felt as though the rules were restrictive and were very thought out to ensure safety to all volunteers. I wish I did longer than the 3 weeks and can’t wait to go back, I would recommend this trip to anyone and believe the process is so easy to do
