Food Waste Reduction Project in Portugal

Each day, about 2,000 kilograms of food is wasted in Portugal. Volunteers on this inspiring project travel around Lisbon visiting supermarkets, cafes, bars, and restaurants to collect unwanted or unused food. This food is then distributed to some of the city's poorest inhabitants. Volunteers help with food collection, preparing the food for distribution and giving it to the people who most need it. Not only does this project do amazing things for sustainability, but it also goes a long way to helping people in need. Volunteers can take part for one week to 12 weeks. Volunteers live in an eco-guesthouse in Lisbon with other volunteers. Three meals per day are provided.

Education is a fundamental human right, yet factors like poverty deprive millions of children of this right. In Portugal, many kids lack the necessary support to continue their education and reach their full potential. As a Youth Support volunteer, you work with children and teens (between 6 and 15 years old) after school or care for toddlers or babies while their parents study or work. Your goal is to be a positive role model, inspiring and encouraging them to think about their future, set goals, and achieve them! What to expect: • Positive Role Model: Spend time with children, helping them envision and pursue their dreams. • Educational Support: Assist with homework and teach English in an informal setting. • Activity Design: Create and implement new extracurricular activities and teach new sports; it’s up to you! Daily Tasks: • Teach English and help kids learn through fun, informal methods. • Keep them entertained with games and activities. • Supervise and interact with the kids • Tutor kids with their homework. • Share your talents and skills. Volunteer between June and August and provide extra help to our partner organizations as they host summer camps.

Program: Volunteer on Food Rescue in Portugal with IVHQ

10

This was my first time going abroad alone. I was really nervous before leaving because my English isn’t very good, and I was afraid of causing trouble for others. That nervousness stayed with me even until my second day in Portugal. I wasn’t familiar with the public transport there, and I felt like I messed up a lot of things. Unlike others who get excited before starting a new experience, I mostly felt scared. I even wondered why I had made such a brave decision. But little by little, that nervousness melted away because of the warmth and kindness of the people around me. At the hostel, I met sincere and talkative friends. During volunteering, I finally met staff who guided me patiently and helped me a lot. I could clearly feel that I was respected and treated equally. No one laughed at my broken English. That made me never regret my decision. I often walked alone on the streets of Lisbon, enjoying the beauty of the city. Although the weather wasn’t great, I will always cherish the warmth and touching moments this experience brought me.
