How to Study Abroad
Types
Types of Study Abroad Programs
There are three common types of study abroad programs:
- Direct enrollment. This program allows you to study abroad in an international university, often alongside local students. Your course choices may be limited to classes in English, classes for international students, or classes designed for study abroad students, such as language and area studies. In some cases, you might be able to choose any courses offered at the university. These programs are ideal for any student and are usually the desired choice for upperclassmen who need classes in their major.
- Provider or University Program. The second type of study abroad program is one designed entirely by a study abroad provider or a university for international study abroad students. While there may be less interaction with local students, the curriculum may be ideally suited for you and other international students. You may also study alongside peers from around the world. These programs may last a week, a summer, a semester, or a year.
- Customized Program. The final type of study abroad is the customized program, or often referred to as the faculty-led program. This is a study abroad opportunity designed specifically for a group of students from one university and may or may not be hosted by an international university. This might include a research project in the field with other students and researchers, or it may be as simple as a trip organized by your professor visiting key destinations in his/her course.
There are other types of study abroad opportunities, including service learning for university credit, internships abroad for academic credit, non-credit study abroad, including language school learning, or study programs abroad, excluding any credit. You might also consider an exchange program, which is typically a reciprocal agreement between your home university and another university, allowing students to swap places and pay their home tuition and fees.
Why
Why Study Abroad
The majority of students who study abroad report it to be their most significant learning experience during the university program. Students also often report studying abroad as a life-changing experience. It is one of the activities that will help you perform better overall at university, engage more with your classmates and faculty, and improve your communication skills and academic performance. There are dozens of convincing reasons you should consider studying abroad.
Whether or not you study abroad for credit and how you utilize that credit is up to you. For many students, this may be the most important question. Ask yourself important questions to decide why studying abroad might be a great choice for you. Do you want to satisfy some degree requirements? Check off some general studies or core requirements? Do you need a foreign language proficiency for your major? Do you feel like some parts of the world may be better settings for courses in your major?
You might start by making a checklist of your goals in study abroad. If your number one goal is to see Angkor Wat, any program to Cambodia might satisfy your goal. If your primary goal is to take Advanced Nuclear Physics, you need to find a program that offers this class, teaches in English, and allows international students to enroll in advanced courses in Nuclear Physics. If language acquisition is your goal, be sure the study abroad program offers language classes for foreign speakers and that they offer these classes at all levels.
Benefits
Benefits of Studying Abroad
There are countless benefits to studying abroad—broadened horizons, new perspectives, and marketable skills! If you’re interested in a career in international sectors or in the humanities, then studying abroad is a no-brainer. Your cross-cultural communication skills will improve tenfold, and you’ll have the opportunity to study a new language as well. But even if your long-term career goals aren’t internationally-oriented, you’ll still come away from study abroad as a more well-rounded person with cool stories to tell, having learned more than a few new things about yourself in the process.
You know all this, the real benefit will be the internal rewards you get from this experience. You will have memories that last a lifetime, you may make friends who you will be close to for the rest of your life, and you will look at the world through a new set of eyes. The transformation is so profound that students occasionally change their major, decide a career choice and perhaps modify their entire life plan after studying abroad.
There are many more benefits of studying abroad you've never even thought of, too.
Funding
Study Abroad Scholarships & Funding
Many students need financial help in order to study abroad. If you’re studying abroad and you expect to earn credits, federal financial aid may help cover the costs. Each university has its own policies, but most US universities will allow you to utilize federal financial aid as long as your credits are pre-approved and you enroll in the minimum number of classes to remain full-time (typically 12 credit hours during the semester and 6-9 credits in the summer. The best way to be sure is to consult your financial aid advisor, meet with your study abroad office, and talk to your academic advisor to be sure your credits will count. Institutional aid or scholarships from your home university have varied policies regarding their application to study abroad. Often, institutional aid is simply a discount and may not be used for study abroad. Other schools support study abroad and are willing to subsidize the experience by allowing your aid to be utilized.
If you don’t receive financial aid, or if you’re studying through a university or provider where you can’t apply your typical aid, then you may need to rely on study abroad scholarships, study abroad loans, or crowdfunding platforms like FundMyTravel. Your study abroad department will also be a great lead on where to find study abroad scholarships and how to qualify. If you get creative, there are many other ways of paying for study abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is study abroad?
To put it simply, study abroad is a set time (perhaps a semester or year) when you pursue your academics overseas. This can be through a program at your home university, or it can be through an independent study abroad company in coordination with your university or degree program. Although studying abroad is typically done during college, you can try it out in high school too!
Can I study abroad?
You absolutely can study abroad! There may be a few requirements through your university, degree program, or study abroad provider though. For instance, some universities don’t allow you to study abroad with a GPA under 3.0. You’ll also need to consider your academic goals and how studying abroad fits in. For instance, are you an accounting major? You can still study abroad of course, but it may be a bit more difficult for you to find an opportunity in your degree track. Be sure to speak with your study abroad department or academic advisor to figure out the best move for you.
How long is study abroad?
Your study abroad program could be as short as two weeks, and as long as a full academic year. It could be during any season, and during any year of your academic career. How long your study abroad program lasts is up to you and your goals! Do you want to come home fluent in a second language? Then maybe a full academic year abroad is the right choice for you. Do you want to take fun electives or knock out a few additional credits outside the regular school year? Consider studying abroad for a couple months during the summer. Your study abroad department, academic advisor, and program coordinator will be able to help you decide.
And by the way, if you’re interested in earning your full degree abroad, there are lots of options!
What are some benefits of studying abroad?
There are countless benefits to studying abroad—broadened horizons, new perspectives, and marketable skills, just to name a few! If you’re interested in a career in international sectors or in the humanities, then studying abroad is a no brainer. How to get scholarships to study abroad
Most students need financial help in order to study abroad. If you’re studying abroad through your home university, the financial aid and scholarships you normally receive each semester will most likely cover at least part of the tuition. However, you’ll want to check with your financial aid office about the specifics.
If you don’t receive financial aid, or if you’re studying through a university or provider where you can’t apply your typical aid, then you may need to rely on study abroad scholarships, study abroad loans, or crowdfunding platforms like FundMyTravel.
Your study abroad department will be a great lead on where to find study abroad scholarships and how to qualify. We’ve also put together the resources below to help you learn more about finding and securing funding for your study abroad experience.
What are the best study abroad programs like?
With so many study abroad programs available to you, how can you be sure which one is the one? To find the study abroad program that will suit you best, you’ll need to narrow down your goals. What do you want to learn? What do you want to see? Who do you want to be after studying abroad? Do you want 24/7 on-site support, pre-departure assistance, and resume writing help? And what are your absolute dealbreakers? Once you have your answers, it’ll be easy to find the best study abroad programs for you.

When I was searching for a language school, I did a lot of research, and Schönberg Education turned out to be the best choice I could have made. So far, I can wholeheartedly recommend Schönberg Education to anyone who’s thinking about learning Mandarin.

My 4 Week Mandarin Language Course with Schönberg Education
August 17, 2026by: Yoram W - United StatesI spent four weeks studying Mandarin at Schönberg Education, and it was honestly one of the most memorable experiences of my life. From the start, the school felt welcoming and supportive. My teacher, Alice, was exceptional — patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in my progress. She pushed me to improve while making every lesson enjoyable, and I could feel my confidence in speaking grow week by week. If you are serious about learning Mandarin and truly immersing yourself in Chinese life, I really recommend this school.
Hi yoram, we’re grateful you chose our school to be part of your Chinese journey. also thank you so much for your lovely review. Your feedback means a lot to us. Seeing your progress motivates us to continue giving our best every day. Jiayou.

August 16, 2026by: Sihu Kim - South KoreaProgram: Accredited 120-Hour TEFL/TESOL Course $39 with certificate
It is a nice course with many learning task and affordable price. I needed the subtitle on video so I think the video collection is good for student like me. I can understand most of what the lecturer say, but subtitle are the number one . Next we have task and activity that I like alot and then ideas of games I can use to my young student.
It was wonderful
August 16, 2026by: Abigail Faulkner - United StatesReally enjoyed my time here, wish I could have stayed longer. The only caveat is that the crowd tends to be either rather young (think 16-19) or older (40+) so if you are in the middle of that (I was 22) befriending people may be a bit more awkward, especially with the constantly changing crowd. However, that was not a big problem as I was able to make many great friends outside the program (and some within as well!). Staff were all incredibly informed, helpful, and outgoing and really made the time a blast. The events they offered were plentiful and diverse as well, which was very handy and good for meeting various people. Additionally, the spanish lessons were taught fully in spanish (although staff knows english and helped answer questions in english when people truly didn’t know how to communicate in spanish) which was very good and helped rapidly increase my spanish comprehension and skills.

I especially enjoyed that we went on several excursions not just in Buenos Aires and within Argentina, but also the trip to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, was also a very enjoyable experience so I want to thank Arcos for this experience.

August 14, 2026by: Tim Tim - KazakhstanIt’s not my first time come to China and this time I chose Beijing to attend the camp. I was astonished that there are so many students from different countries and we all try to speak Chinese while we were at class( teacher was very friendly and nice) even even though after class, there are English discussion everywhere hahaha! I like the activities every day especially the ping-pongand I also went to the Great Wall. That was fabulous!

Love to hear it Tim! We loved having you at LTL and we can only hope you come back soon :) Best wishes, LTL Team
Amazing trip in china
August 14, 2026by: Giulia G - ItalyI want to write this review because my school trip to Beijing was really, really beautiful. I am so happy and I want to share my experience. Every morning we had Chinese class. The teacher was very nice and she laughed a lot with us. Chinese language is very difficult for me, but she explained everything slowly. I learned to say "ni hao" and "xie xie" and also "wo yao" – I want! In Italy we don't learn Chinese, so this was my first time. I liked it very much. The class was not boring – we played games and repeated words like parrots. It was funny! In the afternoon we went to visit many famous places. First, we went to the Forbidden City. It is so big – really, really big! I thought it was only one building but it is many, many buildings. The red walls and golden roofs are fantastic. I took many photos with my phone. My friends and I walked for hours and we were tired but happy. Then on Saturday we went to the Great Wall. This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my whole life! The wall goes up and down the mountains – it is like a dragon. We climbed and climbed and when we arrived at the top, the view was amazing. I could see everything – the trees, the mountains, the sky. I felt like a king! I stayed there for a long time because I didn't want to go down. It was a long tired day trip though. We also visited theA lot of other famous attractions in Beijing, which we heard before we came To China, and we took a little boat with the whole group and our teacher. It was so relaxing. I also liked the markets – we went to the Market and I bought a scarf for my mother and a t-shirt for my brother. The sellers were very friendly and we laughed when I tried to speak Chinese. They said my pronunciation was not so good but they were nice about it. Well, our group tried different food every day but still just a small portion of Chinese multiple food styles. the food was very different from Italian food. But I liked it! Peking duck is really delicious – the skin is crispy and you eat it with pancakes and sauce. Also I tried dumplings and noodles. Some food was strange for me but I tried everything because when you travel, you must try new things, right? While, we were at LTLschool, there are also some other students not from our group, they are from different countries, but also luckily I use home Italian students like us. Our teachers and guides were also very good. They always controlled us and never lost anyone. They told us many stories about China and we listened with open mouths. And each of us got a present on our last day!! Now I am back in Italy and I miss Beijing a lot. My friends and I still talk about this trip every day. We look at our photos and we laugh and remember everything. I think this was the best week of my life this year. If you are a student like me and you have the chance to go to Beijing – GO! Do not think too much. Just go. It is far from home, yes. The language is difficult, yes. But it is so, so worth it. You will see amazing things, eat good food, meet nice people, and make memories that stay forever. I hope to come back to China one day. Maybe I will study Chinese more and speak better! For now, I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone in Beijing – teachers, guides, shop owners, and all the friendly people. You made my trip special. Grazie! Xie xie! Ciao! 🇮🇹❤️🇨🇳

Feeling like a king at the top of the Great Wall!! We love that image! It sounds like an unforgettable first taste of China and we are so happy the classes, the food and the sights all made such an impression. Thanks so much for sharing this and keep up the great work studying Chinese. Grazie e xie xie! LTL Team

How study abroad altered my brain chemistry
August 14, 2026by: Yohany Meneses - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: Argentina: Public Health in Urban Envr.
I arrived expecting to learn about public health, but I left with a new understanding of myself, my future, and the world around me. Through SIT’s Public Health in Urban Environments program, I studied Argentina’s health system, epidemiology, and social determinants of health while experiencing firsthand how culture, community, and inequality shape health. My independent research on access to dental care in underserved communities was especially meaningful. As someone pursuing pediatric dentistry, speaking with dentists and families strengthened my desire to make oral healthcare more accessible and culturally responsive. But some of my most important lessons happened outside the classroom. Living with a host family, traveling throughout Argentina, building friendships, and navigating a new environment pushed me beyond what was comfortable and made me more independent and open-minded. Study abroad didn’t just give me memories or academic credits it changed how I see my education, my future career, and myself. As a mentor, I hope to help other students take that same leap and make their experience their own.
I miss it everyday!!
August 14, 2026by: Sofia Lerma - United StatesMy time as a University of Sussex student was a life changing opportunity. I got to grow and connect with people who I was able to explore with. I constantly reminisce on my time there and all that I got to do and for that I am grateful!
Choose this program for its beautiful scenery, not for its food and affordability.
August 14, 2026by: Ian Spry - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: Iceland: Renewable Energy (Summer 1)
I initially thought that the experience would be much more academically intense than it actually was. This notion was based on the information in the syllabi. The seminar syllabus listed weekly required readings and even an in-class exam, but neither occurred. In the project class, the weights for each assignment were far from accurate, and the required word count was double what it should have been. I am not complaining that I did not have much work to do, but the syllabi should be updated to represent the classes accurately. The two individuals who led the program did a good job planning the experience and ensuring that students were in the know about the activities that would be done each day. However, some activities and site visits felt like fillers to make sure students did not have too much free time. The dorms and hostel we stayed at were overall very solid. The only negative was the kitchen at the hostel in Akureyri, which only contained a mini fridge, a microwave, and one burner. The food in Iceland is extremely mediocre due to its reliance on imported products. This means that produce and food overall were often below the standards of food in the U.S. On top of this, any above-average food you want to eat will cost you an arm and a leg, so eating out often is impossible if you want to stay within budget. One positive of Iceland is that almost everyone knows English. This made traveling and communicating very easy. Icelanders are known to be very honest and can sometimes be judgmental if tourists are not abiding by the country's norms.

Impressed! Not going to say it was perfect, as little is, but the longer course was really interesting and did the job well of bringing me from someone who knew nothing (literally) about ESL to feeling confident about what to do on day 1. Thanks!
