A Guide to Studying Conservation & Preservation Abroad

While many people consider themselves armchair history buffs or nature lovers, very few actually dedicate themselves to the preservation of the past and the environment. Studying  conservation and preservation abroad is a great way to expand your knowledge in some of the world’s most valuable fields, while learning about a country that has always spiked your interest. When it comes to conservation and preservation study abroad programs, the world is yours for the taking!

Why Study Abroad

History and the environment are everywhere, and so conservation experts are needed all over the world to help preserve and restore the most valuable reminders of our past and the future of our planet too. From museums to natural wonders to archaeological sites to rainforests, studying conservation and preservation abroad is your chance to earn both academic credit and practical experience in the field. This is your chance to go anywhere in the world and train with the best in the business, so what are you waiting for!

Locations

The past is engrained into cities and landscapes all across the planet, hence there are hundreds of places where it is possible to study conservation and preservation abroad. Yet, while there are many countries in the world that are rich in historical assets and unique environments in need of conservation and preservation, a few primary factors may determine your decision of where to study abroad.

First, the language barrier. Conservation and preservation are highly specialized subjects, so while English language programs do exist in many regions around the world, your study abroad opportunities will be greatly enhanced if you can speak a second language. Most large universities use their national language as the language of instruction, in which case you will have access to the entire course offerings of an institution if you speak the local language. Even smaller schools tend to utilize their native tongue in most courses and programs.

Beyond the language factor, also consider studying abroad in a place that excites you and that you are curious about. Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, though undeniably intertwined, are all places where the study of conservation and preservation takes on a distinct form and focus. There is of course immense local diversity within these regions as well, so make sure to cover these bases when deciding where to study conservation and preservation abroad.

Courses & Programs

One of the best things about studying conservation and preservation abroad is that you will often actually be interacting with the environment you choose to live in. Not many academic subjects afford you with such an opportunity to explore your surroundings so intimately.

Some common courses that students take abroad within the field of conservation and preservation related to history include art conservation, historic building preservation, financing for historic preservation, and documenting historic preservation. It is up to you entirely what area you will specialize in, art and architecture being the most common areas of conservation studies for most students. Taking on the subject from another perspective, students can also take courses in environmental preservation, sustainable development, and even wildlife conservation.

Conservation and preservation degrees are traditionally conferred at the postgraduate level, although courses in the general subject area are more commonly offered at the undergraduate level too. Therefore, it is usually possible to take conservation and preservation courses in a variety of institutions for academic credit.
