How to Study at Language Schools Abroad
Overview
What are language schools?
International language schools are pretty much what they sound like. They’re designated institutions or organizations that specialize in the instruction of one or multiple languages, which pretty much always includes the local language. They offer highly effective lessons, as well as plenty of opportunities for practice, if you want to learn a language abroad.
The benefits of learning a language abroad
The biggest benefit of learning a language abroad is immersion! Learning Spanish in Madrid is a lot different than learning it in a classroom at home. Everywhere you go in your host country, you’ll be exposed to the language you’re trying to learn. Even a trip to the grocery store will be a language learning experience!
Other benefits of taking language courses abroad include increased confidence and feelings of capability, new perspectives, a greater understanding of intercultural communication, and maybe even new ways of thinking.
Getting Started
How to learn a language abroad
Learning a language abroad can sound intimidating to many people, especially when you’re a complete beginner. However, whether you’re a novice or have already started studying your target language, you can absolutely benefit from language immersion programs abroad.
Here’s how to learn a language abroad:
- Choose a language. If you don’t know what you want to study, you might be wondering how to choose a language to learn when there’s so many to choose from. A good way to choose is by thinking about your academic or career goals. Do you want to work in Spain? Study first edition Russian literature? Take business trips to Beijing someday? Figuring out what you want in the future will help you pick a language to learn.
- Choose a destination. Some languages, like Spanish, are spoken in dozens of countries around the world. Many languages also have different dialects and accents within their many homes. If you’re learning a language for school or work, then your destination choice will probably be a bit more obvious. Otherwise, you may want to research your options before selecting a course in order to find the best fit for you.
- Set goals. Most likely, you can’t stay abroad forever to learn your new language, which is why you need to make the most of your time. Whether you’re going abroad for two weeks or two years, you need to set language goals for yourself. Do you want to be fluent? Reaching such a speaking level will take dedication and commitment, while gaining conversational skills may be more attainable in a shorter amount of time.
- Find language courses. Once you know what you want to learn and where, it’s time to look at language programs abroad! The best programs will have lots of positive reviews, and be well-established within their host community. Be sure to ask your program advisor about the opportunities they provide to practice your new language skills.
Duration
How long does it take to learn a language through immersion?
How long will it take you to learn your target language? If you’re looking at intensive language courses abroad, immersion will be a huge part of the curriculum. Three months of uninterrupted language immersion will do wonders for your speaking and comprehension skills.
However, if you don’t have three months to commit to learning a language abroad, even two weeks of language immersion can take a beginner up to conversational levels. The trick is to avoid being passive in your language learning journey! You’ll need to be actively practicing nearly all day, every day, if you want to really make a difference in your language learning. If you want to be fluent, the longer your immersion lasts, the better.

I enjoyed my experience in Beijing
October 15, 2026by: Markus Mosimann - SwitzerlandFrom September 21 to October 9 I attended a small Chinese class at LTL in Beijing. It was really a great experience! In the morning, in a small group, I learned about several topics. The grammar and the vocabulary were introduced by Summer Wang, our teacher. She did a truly outstanding job. She was well prepared, spoke excellent English, challenged us and encouraged us to speak. In the afternoon I had one-on-one lessons with Snow Yang. I talked a lot with her and learned a great deal, not only about the language but also about the culture. Thanks to her empathetic, flexible and funny personality, we had great conversations. And I even learned to write some Chinese characters. I would like to thank the whole LTL team in Beijing for a wonderful time!
Thanks for your lovely words, Markus. We're delighted you had a great time studying with us in Beijing. Hope to see you back again someday soon! LTL Team
I never imagined I'd feel so at home in a place thousands of miles away!
October 15, 2026by: Meghan Riley - United StatesProgram: Summer Spanish Immersion in Mexico | 15 & 30-Day Programs
I never imagined I'd feel so at home in a place thousands of miles away! From the relaxed pace of life to the incredible hospitality of the locals, Mexico completely won me over. One of my favorite things was discovering all the little places around Cuernavaca that I would never have found on my own. There was always something interesting happening, whether it was a spontaneous outing, a delicious meal or simply enjoying an afternoon together. Iguana Abroad has created something really special here, and the personal touch makes all the difference. It's a fantastic way to experience a side of Mexico that most tourists never get to see.
A Summer To Remember
October 15, 2026by: Anthony Selsby - United KingdomProgram: Summer Spanish Immersion in Mexico | 15 & 30-Day Programs
Best summer of my life, can't thank the two Harry's and Fabi enough they really made this one so so special. Made some amazing friends I’ll stay in touch with forever, memories I'll keep forever, and my Spanish has improved a lot too... what else could I ask for?? Mexico is such a beautiful country, and Cuernavaca really impressed me as well. Would so much love to come back again! The food, the trips and all the incredible laughs made every day so unforgettable. Just loved experiencing Mexican culture and practising Spanish outside the classroom !
Really excellent course which exceeded my expectations.
October 15, 2026by: Jacob Swan - CanadaProgram: Private Spanish Immersion Course
Really excellent course and exceeded my expectations. My host family were genuinely lovely people, the school was beautiful as well, the campus really impressed me. Cuernavaca is a really special place, and it was a pleasure getting to explore the beautiful surrounding area on the trips and events I did. There were a lot of memorable moments, but probably the highlight for me was playing chess in mornings at the school campus with my teacher Sebas. Would definitely recommend and hopefully I'll be able to return as well one day!!
The Most Authentic Experience I've Had in Mexico
October 15, 2026by: Shannon Phelps - United StatesIf you're looking for a typical language school, this probably isn't it - and that's a good thing! Iguana Abroad seriously gave me the chance to actually experience Mexico - while learning Spanish... and Semana Santa was unlike anything I've ever seen. Incredible. Before arriving I was nervous about travelling alone, which I've done before but a long time ago, but within a day everyone felt like family. Everybody said the same - it's one of Iguana Abroad's amazing strengths as a course. My host family made me feel so welcome, and my teachers were so patient, encouraging and genuinely cared about helping me improve my Spanish. For me the highlight was visiting Ocotepec during Good Friday to see the Viacrucis parade. I'd never experienced anything like it before - if you are reading this - you need to see it! We also visited Tetela del Volcán on Easter Sunday. The streets were just filled with music, dancing, the incredible Chinelos costumes. It felt like we were experiencing traditions that most tourists never even hear about. I don't think I'd heard about "Semana Santa" until honestly recently. The cooking class, local markets, cultural workshops and excursions all helped us understand Mexico beyond what you could ever learn from a guidebook. An amazing course in an amazing country during an amazing time!
I am so glad I found this course!
October 15, 2026by: Charlie Rimmer - United KingdomJoining the Iguana Abroad easter course was honestly great luck for me. I'd been travelling around Mexico for almost 2 months and was starting to feel really quite down and frustrated about my level of Spanish. I kept on feeling embarrassed when trying to talk to people, eventually shying away from conversations, and basically thinking, this is probably not going to be the trip I'd been getting ready for and dreaming about for so long. After spending a long time studying Spanish I started thinking I'd never learn. I actually arrived to Tepoztlán (about 30 minutes from Cuernavaca) less than a week before the course started, and knew nothing about it until someone in the hostel I was staying at mentioned it. I honestly wasn't planning on doing a course in Mexico, but after reading the reviews and talking with the guys who run the course, I signed up, and I am so glad I did. My main reason for joining was really about learning some Spanish. My plans were to spend the next few months in Latin America, but I didn't want to if I couldn't properly talk with anybody. Just two weeks with Iguana Abroad changed all of that, and I left speaking a far better level of Spanish. And more than that, I wasn't even aware that easter (Semana Santa) was such a big thing in Mexico, so that really blew my mind as well. Seeing the way it is celebrated in Mexico was fascinating, beautiful, and a lot of fun. Without question, this was the best part of my time in Mexico. Can't recommend it enough - and especially joining over Semana Santa.
I learned a lot
October 13, 2026by: Roswitha Menke - GermanyFrom 9/13 to 9/25 2026 I attended the A2-class in a small gruop at LTL - four students in the first week, three in the second. Our teacher, Alice He, did a great job answering all our questions and focus on the skills we needed to improve the most. My Chinese speaking skills definitely improved. I also enjoyed the lighthearted atmosphere - the staff was always ready to help, ready for a chat concerning life and challenges in Beijing. Linda organized great events - the Ditan book market and the sketching lessons were highlights. Rita accompanied me on several afternoons: 798, the tea museum, and her home were great possibilites to learn about life in China. All in all a clear recommendation for anyone at any age who wants to learn Chinese in Beijing. Hugs and many thanks Roswitha
Thanks so much for your kind words, Roswitha. We hope to see you again some day :) LTL Team

很棒的课程,很棒的老师
October 12, 2026by: Adam Janmohamed - United Kingdom在 That's Mandarin 学习中文的体验真的很棒。
Ready to put what I've learned to use
October 12, 2026by: Stephanie Schwenke - GermanyIf you're wondering if one week is worth it, the answer is definitely yes! When we first met, I told Heather at LTL Beihai that my goals were practical Chinese for help as I travel and to work on my intonation. She took my request on board and tailored each lesson to my needs, working with me to improve vocabulary, sentence structure and practice tones and pronunciation. I strongly recommend Heather!
So happy to hear it, Stephanie. It's a pleasure to hear you had such a great time in Beihai with us. Hope to see you again soon :) Best wishes, LTL Team
Enjoyed my time in Chengde with LTL!
October 12, 2026by: Celina Sheng - CanadaI am a person with Chinese ethnic origin but born and raised in Canada. Before studying with LTL, I could listen, speak, read, and write a bit, but it was far from fluent. I could speak to people in Chinese a bit, but I often felt insecure and embarrassed by my bad Chinese. I decided to spend 5 weeks with LTL. I spent the first week in Beijing to get transitioned into China, and then 4 more weeks in Chengde. I really enjoyed my time in Chengde. Land-wise, the city is quite small and very walkable. Everything is within a 30 minute walk. Didi rides are fairly cheap as well (around ¥5-10 a trip). Everyone I met here is friendly. I have been able to chat with the locals in Chengde and make friends. People say that Chengde is more slow-paced, which I can definitely feel in comparison to Beijing. I really enjoy a slower paced environment because I think that life shouldn't feel rushed! The city is still very lively and vibrant with a lot of people around you. Zhongwen's family has been an absolute pleasure to live with and I often played with her daughter in the evenings. Zhongwen has given me plenty of opportunities to connect with locals. Additionally, my teacher I-da Li has been a pleasure to work with. I-da is not afraid to correct my mistakes (accent and grammar), which I really appreciate because it helps me sound more Chinese! My confidence in my Mandarin has improved a lot. I find myself surprised that I can hold conversations fairly well. Even though I'm still not 100% fluent, I feel like this experience has given me the tools and confidence that I need to continue to improve my fluency. While I personally have tried not to speak in English in Chengde, I have found that there are quite a few locals interested in learning English. So, even if your Chinese is not perfect, you'll be able to connect with people who want to practice their English with you and you two can have an engaging language exchange.
Wow Celina this is so great to read! We are thrilled I-da and Zhongwen both played such a big part in your positive experience in Chengde. Thanks so much for taking the time and keep up the great work studying Mandarin! LTL Team

Studied at LTL Chengdu for 3 months with Panpan老师
October 10, 2026by: Jason Budiana - IndonesiaI studied at LTL Chengdu for 3 months and had Panpan as my teacher. We had 4 hours of one-on-one class everyday. Panpan is very cultured and understands english extremely well so it was very easy to understand when she would translate and explain Chinese words, phrases, idioms, or even 抖音videos. Before I came to Chengdu, Panpan went out of her way to scout apartments for me to move in to. She is not only a good teacher but also a really good friend. She would always invite me to go out with her friends or other students who eventually became my friends. She always recommended something fun for the weekend and her knowledge on places to visit is top tier. She is also really funny and can get along with anybody! The teachers are awesome and have really good english. Panpan, Chenxin, Ying, Stiles, and Wuyi are some teachers at LTL Chengdu who made my learning experience as fun and enjoyable as it was.

Thanks Jason, it's been great to have you back at LTL again! We're happy to match your expectations and we hope you continue to make great progress going forward. LTL Team
In good hands for HSK5 exam
October 05, 2026by: Miriam Mitchell - United StatesProgram: Immersive Learning: Homestay with Professional Teachers
I did a one month full immersion program with Lingoinn. My homestay experience was really good. I felt very comfortable and very safe. Both teachers were very professional and very experienced with teaching at the HSK5 level, so I felt like I was in good hands to be better prepared for the HSK5 exam that I'm taking this coming fall. Lingoinn's organization and support was very, very good. They kept checking up on me during the entire homestay and they would always answer our questions very quickly. And also, it was super fun. I was a little bit out of my comfort zone in the beginning, but I adjusted and I was able to have a really fun experience. So, thank you.

The best Spanish course there is!
October 05, 2026by: Sarah Claes - BelgiumProgram: Private Spanish Immersion Course
I joined Iguana Abroad because I wanted to improve my Spanish before travelling more in Latin America, like a few other people I met during my time as well. I had only studied a little before coming to Mexico, maybe just for a year, so I was quite nervous that I would not understand anything, especially Mexican Spanish. It was also my first time travelling alone outside Europe, or anywhere actually. It took only a few days and I already felt much more confident with every day. The teachers were very patient and so fun, and I never felt embarrassed when I made mistakes which is one of my biggest worries before joining and because I have learnt languages before. The classes were serious and sometimes hard but also really fun, and every day I could use what I learned outside the classroom which is what I hoped for when I applied. One thing I really liked and I hoped for as well, was that it was not only about learning Spanish in a classroom. We visited many interesting places, learned about Mexican culture, tried local food, and spent a lot of time speaking with local people, and with new friends I have now. I met so many amazing people which I am so thankful for. Also before coming to Mexico, I was kind of worried because lots of people told me it was pretty dangerous especially as a woman. After spending my time in Cuernavaca, I realised that, like everywhere, you just need to use common sense. It is no different than just using common sense in any place that you go. I always felt well looked after and safe, and having the Iguana Abroad team there as well if I needed anything gave me a lot of confidence to just not ever worry. I am so grateful for that. I would definitely recommend Iguana Abroad to anyone who wants to learn Spanish and experience the real Mexico, not only the tourist places.
One of the best experiences of my life
October 05, 2026by: Michael Wilson - United StatesProgram: Private Spanish Immersion Course
I came to Mexico at 62 years old with absolutely no Spanish and really no idea what to expect either. It was my first time ever visiting Mexico and spending 15 weeks with Iguana Abroad turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. Starting from total zero was definitely pretty intimidating at first, especially as I have never even practiced Spanish before but the combination of the daily group and private Spanish lessons, really amazing activities, and complete everyday immersion made so much of a difference. Even just week by week I was noticing that my level was getting better and by the end of the program I was having conversations in Spanish that I seriously never thought would be possible. One thing I would definitely want to say to anybody reading this is that one of the highlights of my whole time with Iguana Abroad and the guys here was staying with my local host family. I also spent some time in private accommodation, but if you're deciding between the two, I'd strongly recommend the homestay. I was welcomed into the family from day one and totally overwhelmed by their kindness to me. The relationships I built there have lasted well beyond the course, and I'll be returning to Cuernavaca next year for the wedding of one of my host family's relatives, and it's amazing to think that I'll be able to chat with everyone in Spanish when I get back. Harry and the entire Iguana Abroad team were excellent, and worked so hard to make this trip not just possible, but to become an important time for me. I can't recommend these guys highly enough.
Intensivo y simpatico
October 03, 2026by: ines vielhaben - GermanyProgram: Spanish Immersion Online | Fast-Track Your Fluency!
