What inspired you to travel abroad?

My inspiration to go abroad stemmed from a desire to broaden my horizons by experiencing different cultures firsthand. I enjoy immersing myself in new environments and learning from diverse perspectives.

Additionally, going abroad allows me to explore career opportunities that align with my goals, offering a more global view of my field.

Why did you choose the Intensive Chinese Group Class program at That's Mandarin?

I chose this program and organization because it offers a high-quality and intensive curriculum at a reasonable price, combining both academic rigor and practical exposure.

The inclusion of cultural activities also appealed to me, as it provides a well-rounded experience. Additionally, their excellent support and commitment to student success made them stand out to me.

What was your favorite part about Shanghai?

Shanghai is an ideal city, known for its vibrant lifestyle and welcoming atmosphere.

It offers a diverse array of experiences, from scenic city walks and world-class museums to a lively nightlife and rich arts and culture scene. Here, one can find everything they’re looking for, making it a city full of opportunities and memorable moments.

What made your experience abroad extraordinary?

China is truly unique, especially if you were born and raised in a Western country with a Western mindset.

I believe it's nearly impossible to fully understand China without being physically present. The cultural and language barriers make it challenging to access authentic sources about the Chinese lifestyle.

How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?

The local staff provided exceptional support throughout my program.

They were always helpful and approachable, assisting me with various aspects such as finding accommodation and managing daily tasks. Their dedication made a significant difference in my experience, making me feel welcome and easing my transition into the new environment.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?

Shanghai is a sprawling city, and navigating it can sometimes be challenging due to its size.

It’s essential to carefully plan where you live in relation to your workplace or study location. Without strategic planning, daily commuting can become difficult and time-consuming. By considering transportation options in advance, you can greatly enhance your experience in the city.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

In the mornings, I attended an intensive Chinese course, which allowed me to immerse myself in the language and culture.

After classes, I spent my time exploring the city or engaging with life on the university campus, where I was completing an exchange semester. This balance provided me with both academic growth and a deeper cultural experience.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?

In Shanghai, the possibilities are practically limitless, offering something for everyone, regardless of their interests.

For instance, as someone passionate about jazz music, I found the city's jazz scene fascinating. It blends elements from both Western and Asian music cultures, creating a truly unique experience.

What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?

I stayed in a studio apartment with an open kitchen and a private bathroom.

The space was comfortable and conveniently located in the heart of the city. Its central location allowed easy access to my school, as well as nearby convenience stores, cafes, and bars, making it an ideal spot for both studying and enjoying the city’s vibrant lifestyle.

What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?

It’s important to be aware that this course is highly intensive.

Each day, you’re introduced to dozens, if not hundreds, of new words and phrases. Managing and absorbing this volume of information can be challenging at times. However, if you’re able to keep up, the course offers a fantastic opportunity to gain a deep understanding of both the Chinese language and culture in a relatively short period.

Would you recommend That's Mandarin to others? Why?

If you're interested in learning about Chinese culture and language, this is undoubtedly the right place.

The combination of well-structured course content, engaging cultural activities, and comprehensive support for daily life ensures that your experience is both seamless and enriching, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the culture.

What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?

In my opinion, the biggest benefit of this experience is the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, spanning different ages and backgrounds, but sharing the same mindset and vision.

It’s inspiring to connect with individuals who bring diverse perspectives yet are united by similar goals and aspirations, fostering a sense of community and mutual growth.

Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?

Exposure to different cultures fosters a more open-minded and empathetic outlook.

Each region has its own unique paradigms and lifestyles, and understanding this diversity broadens one’s perspective. This experience not only enriches your mindset but also enhances your ability to read situations and understand the emotions of those around you, making you more adaptable and perceptive in diverse settings.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

For me, meaningful travel means staying away from popular tourist attractions as much as possible and immersing myself in the city like a local.

It's about exploring hidden gems, connecting with local people, and understanding the culture from a more authentic perspective, beyond the surface level of typical tourist spots. This approach allows for a deeper, more enriching experience of the place.
