Surpassed My Expectations - An Incredible Start for a Complete Beginner! I began my 1-on-1 Chinese course at That's Mandarin as a complete beginner with very limited vocabulary. I was initially overwhelmed, relying heavily on translation tools and struggling to understand spoken Chinese. However, after just one month with my incredible teachers, Long Laoshi and Erica Laoshi, my progress has surpassed my expectations by far. The transformation is remarkable. My listening comprehension has improved dramatically; I can now understand everyday conversations, or at least enough to grasp the context, without constantly needing a translation app. What felt like "slow motion" reading at the start quickly accelerated after the first two weeks, thanks to their effective methods. The synergy between Long Laoshi and Erica Laoshi is their greatest strength. They complement each other perfectly. Erica Laoshi is a wealth of knowledge on Chinese characters, their history, and how to logically build vocabulary. Long Laoshi was instrumental in building my confidence to speak, using language flow practice and spontaneous conversations that pushed me to use my own words and ideas. Both teachers are exceptionally motivating and followed a core structured approach, which provided a helpful guideline. Yet, they were always flexible, adjusting lessons based on my needs and patiently answering any question that arose. I particularly loved that their teaching went beyond grammar and vocabulary to include cultural and historical knowledge, creating a rich and engaging mix that never felt tedious. It's clear they are not only knowledgeable about the Chinese language and culture but also about effective teaching methodologies. I can wholeheartedly recommend That's Mandarin and especially Long Laoshi and Erica Laoshi to any student seeking a supportive, dynamic, and profoundly effective learning journey.

Cette école de mandarin est une évidence pour ceux qui souhaitent apprendre le mandarin. Je suis pour une durée de 7 semaines dans leur établissement de Chengdu, dans le Sichuan. J’écris ce commentaire après 4 semaines sur place, pleines de bons moments. Avant de partir, j’hésitais beaucoup entre cette institution et une autre nommée LTL. J’ai choisi That’s Mandarin car mon cousin avait fait LTL à Pékin et avait eu une expérience moyennement convainquante. L’école a toujours été très disponible pour moi. Que ce soit dans la planification de la durée de mon séjour, mon hébergement, etc…Personnellement, l’école m’a fourni une chambre tout à faite correcte dans un immeuble à deux pas de la station de métro Ren Min Bei Lu. L’établisement m’a aussi apporté son aide quand il a fallu s’inscire pour l’examen HSK sur place. Merci à eux encore par ailleurs. L’école se situe au 5ième étage d’un immeuble très cental et très facile d’accès. Je suis tout les jours accueilli très chaleureusement par les proffeseures Wu et Rui Rui. L’école est très bien amménagée. 7 salles de classes avec de grands écrans et un grand hall pour étudier ou jouer à des jeux. Ambiance super bonne-enfant. Il y a une dizaine de proffeseurs différents, tous très très sympatique. (Particulièrement Dao Dao et Xi Xi qui me taquinnent quotidienement hahaha.) L’école organise parfois des événements ludiques extra-scolaires. Pour mon cas, j’ai pu participer à une soirée de Mahjong sichuanais, où je me suis découvert une véritable passion pour ce jeu! Je prends des cours avec la proffeseure Wen, très bonne proffeseure qui sait très bien guider les élèves ! Hors de ce qui est de l’école. Chengdu est une ville fantastique avec une façon de vivre et une gastronomie complétement différentes de celles des autres mégapoles de ce pays. Chengdu est aussi super bien placée pour ceux qui souhaiterait voyager en Chine. Vous êtes à moins de deux heures de trains de lieux fantastiques comme le Budha de Leshan ou encore la ville de Chongqing (À ne surtout pas oublier aussi la ville de Zigong, qui a été une véritable surprise pour moi ! Véritable pépite très peu connue, qui vaut clairement le détour pour ceux qui veulent voir la vraie Chine rurale) En résumé : Ne vous posez plus aucun doute, That’s Mandarin Chengdu est l’endroit où il faut aller pour apprendre le mandarin et vivre une expérience hors du commun dans un pays hors du commun !

Teachers are very helpful and accommodating. They are great at making sure I understand the lessons, and the coursework itself is very thorough and manageable (even for beginners like myself). Combined with several culturally themed social outings, this is a school I'd highly recommend for learning Chinese.
