Join us in our medical internship at a district hospital in Chiang Mai, Thailand. You will work in district hospitals that are severely under-resourced. District hospitals in the area serve a population between 60,000 and 80,000 in size and are only staffed by approximately 3-5 doctors and 30-40 nurses. Despite the challenges, the Thai public healthcare system is often viewed as one of the best in the region. Some of the prevalent problems the local health care system is facing are teenage pregnancy, increasing levels of non-communicable diseases, and contagious diseases. Hospitals, however, do provide a range of services including emergency care, x-ray, laboratory, in-patient wards, OBGYN, pharmacy, ECG, dental, eye-care, and pre and post-op care. Thailand is an excellent place to undertake a medical internship, as you will observe how healthcare systems in developing countries can overcome many obstacles. The medical internship in Chiang Mai primarily involves shadowing and is, therefore, suitable for students of medicine, nursing, or healthcare. Cultural sensitivity and good team working skills are also essential since you will be working with a local team.

This exciting program offers internships for participants currently studying medicine. Placements are available in several notable private and public full-service hospitals in Chiang Mai. In all cases, volunteers/interns can work closely with a supervising physician and are paired with a full-time doctor they shadow on daily rounds. Interns are only placed with doctors with an exceptional command of English. They are highly qualified professionals, many of whom have been educated in the US or the UK. Responsibilities vary according to individual qualifications, experience, and/or comfort level. Participants with a full medical degree often enjoy far more access when administering care and interacting with patients. However, it is important to note that most interns only observe or help with minor tasks. Despite careful monitoring of the supervising staff in every aspect of the internship, it’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for medical students, considering they would never get the same level of “behind-the-scenes” experience in a Western hospital.

ISDSI offers independent 8-week internships in the summer (June through July). Internships are a unique opportunity to explore a field or topic you are interested in, help you prepare for graduate school, explore an area you are curious about, or see if this might be something you’d like to do more of. Each internship placement is developed in collaboration with the student and host organization. While there is no "list" of available internships, most partner organizations are willing to work with ISDSI and each student to create unique learning opportunities. We work with several NGOs (non-government organizations), government clinics and offices, small businesses, community enterprises, and others. Some of the areas where we have placed students include (but are not limited to!) the following: Sustainable agriculture Public health Veterinary and pre-vet animal care Child development Education Environmental science Community development Human rights Entrepreneurship Health care and more!

Be part of a Medical Intern Project in Thailand. You get the chance to find out firsthand why Thailand has become a medical center for much of Asia and why westerners travel half-way across the world to receive inexpensive, expert medical care. Thailand's medical system is well known for its highly qualified doctors, staff and new medical equipment. Interns will be paired with a full-time Thai doctor and work five days a week (Mon-Fri) 8:00am-4:00pm. In special cases interns may work on weekends and evenings. Interns will shadow the Thai doctor in their normal, daily routines and assist with professional responsibilities. No more than two interns at any one time will be paired with each full-time doctor. The amount of on hands involvement while interning will depend upon the interns' experience, education, comfort level, the length of the internship and the consent of both the attending doctor and the hospital administration. Interns who have completed course study and received their medical degree will be able to execute a more active role during their internships.
