District hospitals in the area serve a population between 60,000 and 80,000 in size and are only staffed by approximately 3-5 doctors and 30-40 nurses. Despite the challenges, the Thai public healthcare system is often viewed as one of the best in the region. Some of the prevalent problems the local health care system is facing are teenage pregnancy, increasing levels of non-communicable diseases, and contagious diseases. Hospitals, however, do provide a range of services including emergency care, x-ray, laboratory, in-patient wards, OBGYN, pharmacy, ECG, dental, eye-care, and pre and post-op care. Thailand is an excellent place to undertake a medical internship, as you will observe how healthcare systems in developing countries can overcome many obstacles. The medical internship in Chiang Mai primarily involves shadowing and is, therefore, suitable for students of medicine, nursing, or healthcare. Cultural sensitivity and good team working skills are also essential since you will be working with a local team.
