Spend a semester abroad in Barcelona, taking English classes in a city where Mediterranean sunshine meets daring architecture and vibrant street life. Think Gaudí’s colorful curves at Park Güell, the sound of guitars drifting through plazas, and palm trees swaying beside the sea. From golden beaches to mountain views, Barcelona blends coastal calm with a bold, creative spirit. Join a welcoming host family, form close friendships with your cohort, and immerse yourself in Catalan culture. From tapas nights in El Born to afternoons at Barceloneta Beach, every day brings something new. Take guided excursions to Tarragona’s Roman amphitheater by the sea and the awe-inspiring Sagrada Família, Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece. Your semester promises fun adventures, lifelong friends, and a future shaped by global experiences.

Travel to Barcelona, Spain with Abbey Road Programs this summer! Improve your Spanish, meet new friends, explore the amazing sights of the Barcelona region, and so much more! The highlight of the program is our residence: a modern, comfortable and secure apartment complex, within the city. It has a gym, rooftop pool, AC, wifi, and many common areas for students to socialize. Abbey Road provides three meals a day of high-quality food through a variety of venues. We cook together one or two nights per week, with the help of our staff (this is excellent preparation for college years). On some nights we go out for group dinners at trendy local restaurants in the El Born neighborhood. Some nights we have takeout food. In any case, our students eat authentic, quality food, as opposed to fast food or tourist meals. Our teaching method emphasizes active, hands-on learning, cultural and language immersion. Most of our Spanish classes include interacting with locals, practicing Spanish, and small group Spanish conversation workshops. We go to many cultural and athletic events in Barcelona and its vicinity, as well as day trips to Figueres, Girona, Sitges, and more.

Prepare for High School Student Exchange
Understand benefits
Going abroad as a young traveler, there’s a lot to learn and there’s lots to gain!
- Care and guidance beyond the classroom. Through an exchange program, you have support and guidance from everyone involved, making it an excellent option for a young traveler.
- Transcripts travel with you. Your transcripts should be translated between two affiliated schools easily. Attending an unaffiliated school abroad, credits and subjects may be harder to translate into your school’s curriculum.
- Trust the process and gain independence. These programs help break through any fears you may have about the experience. It can actually increase your confidence and independence.
Things to know
Equip yourself with as much information as possible as you prepare for your student exchange. Here are some essentials to keep in mind:
- Language - Worried about not speaking the language? Most programs don’t require you to know it beforehand. Depending on your studies, you can dive into full immersion or take language classes as an elective.
- Accommodations - You’ll likely stay with a host family or in dorm-style housing. What’s available really depends on the program and the time of year you’re going.
- Visas - Some countries require student visas, especially for longer stays. It’s a good idea to check with your embassy ASAP for the latest info. You can easily find embassies through GoAbroad's Embassy Directory.
- Costs - The price tag depends on where you're headed, how long you'll be there, and a few other factors. Worried about covering the cost? Try starting a crowdfunding campaign with FundMyTravel to help out.
