A Guide to Women’s Studies Degrees Abroad
Why Earn a Degree Abroad
The ultimate plus point of women’s studies: rather than studying a specific discipline, the degree looks at the way of life from start to finish, from the past to the future. This means that purely having lived, you are qualified to have an opinion on the progression of women in your country; the way they are represented in court, politics, media and more. (Awesome, degree done, bring on the champagne!)
You may then think, but why do it abroad? Ever wondered the way the Australians perceives women as fearless leaders (after all, they were faster on the female prime minister bandwagon than most of Europe)? Or, how the one child policy in China affected boy/girl ratio and its knock-on effects in Chinese society? Each country has its electrifying versions of their women; don’t stay in your comfort zone and take a leap in your favorite pair of shoes. Have they ever failed you?
Discussing the impact of Rosa Parks in shaping today’s society is of course fascinating. But, would fellow South American peers think the same? Studying abroad gives the student a direct link to so many other bright young individuals bursting to share their thoughts. For a degree that studies every aspect of society from women’s perspectives, both in the past and the present, exposing yourself to a whole new culture will naturally enhance your awareness from the get-go.
Women’s studies give graduates access to wide ranging opportunities in both the private and public sector. But, with increasingly high supply of recent graduates and relatively stagnant level of demand, competition is fierce. A degree in women’s studies from international universities particularly increases your intercultural awareness, heightened by a wealth of knowledge. Even if it’s not for the sake of boosting your resume, after your time abroad, you yourself will feel different in the way you carry yourself and approach problems. Your time away will have an everlasting impact well after your student life.
Locations
Before you start advocating for “ovesters” instead of “semesters,” keep in mind: the world is your oyster. The field of women’s studies is becoming more and more popular internationally, and thus available at more universities than ever before. One of the best things about studying women’s studies? — every country has a dizzyingly wide range of women. Take some time to discover which programs best suit your needs, and then set sail!
Europe is known to be in a progressive state regarding women. Western European countries, like England, France, and Italy illustrate the high standards which many other countries aspire to. Holland might be the obvious answer for those seeking to challenge the legalization of prostitution and its social impacts, while Norway could teach a thing or two about social services for mothers.
The Middle East has typically been seen to offer a very different set of views on women’s rights, with women living a very different lifestyle to their counterparts in the West. With the majority of the countries in the region being Muslim, it will be a fascinating way to explore a new culture- especially from a religious perspective.
Being the continent to show the fastest economic growth, Asia offers a fascinating time to discover how women have been impacted along the way (or, as super-ladies would put it, how we shaped the economy). Consider choosing to study in Thailand or better yet, India – you will officially be the coolest and most well-informed friend everyone has.
Women’s Studies Degrees
Within the field of women’s studies, universities adopt the tools of science, economics, politics, history and other subjects to tackle the questions of women: how do we define women and their roles in society? As the nature and relativity of women around the world change on a daily basis, women studies are an exciting subject to pursue.
With the degree covering so many different wide ranging subjects within the realms of gender, the requirements for the course is general (although it’s always a good idea to double-check and pay attention to language demands for your women’s studies major), which keeps the possibilities large, allowing the student to really hone in on the specific city/country they want to study in. Be it feminist, gender or sexuality specific, or keeping it general with women’s studies, there is something out there that suits everyone.
Most large universities offer undergraduate as well as postgraduate degrees in women’s studies, with many offering spaces for doctorate students each year. Oftentimes, the degree cohort will be a manageable size and not too large, allowing frequent student-professor interactions as well as the students getting to know each other well. What an opportunity, to meet and learn with like-minded strong individuals passionate about women’s studies and the desire to empower women, with people from all over the world! (Queue metal shields with beautiful women engraved raised high to the sky with a big cheer of “yes we can”!)
Benefits & Challenges
Turn a challenge into a benefit. Don’t sit back when you see injustice or discriminating behavior towards women and men alike. Choosing the women’s studies major gives students the chance to fight back and debate constructively. It’s not marshmallows and pink bubblies all the time – many of those looking for women and gender studies jobs have received unprovoked criticism for choosing to study their degree. Don’t be intimidated and cower away; stand proud and celebrate what women have achieved in the past and what you will achieve in the future.
Multi-cultural, like-minded friends. Give the life of a student abroad a couple of weeks to settle in and acclimatise to your new surroundings. Before you know it, you’ll be picking up the country’s cultural references towards women to address in your first assignment. University years abroad is what many people consider the best time of their lives; add a cohort of strong-minded BFF queens, and it’s bound to be unforgettable.
Wealth of knowledge. Earning an international degree in women’s studies presents the chance to really immerse students in another culture’s way of perceiving women. You’ll also be forced into contact with other international students who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from their home countries. Daily life in another country in itself should be considered as a module; it offers insight that doesn’t have the same impact when it’s quantified and written down.
Whether you're a superwoman or superman, already so or on your way to becoming one, jumpstarting women’s studies careers with a fully-fledged international degree will give you options to fly in so many directions. Both males and females have shaped the world as we know it, and this degree without boundaries is critical in ensuring that power remains in the hands of both gender parties!

June 03, 2020by: Maycie Rosado - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Attending a university in central Madrid is life changing and has many benefits, but attending an US accredited university abroad such as Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus is even better! On and off campus, everyday I experience a multicultural environment. Students are from around the world and my professors are as well. Having this diversity brings many great conversations to the table and allows all of us to learn from each other and make a connection. I have met so many people in my major that have given me a different outlook on things because of our diversity and interest to learn from each other. The campus staff are welcoming and helpful and the facilities are accommodating. I would recommend attending or studying abroad at this university because Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus has so much to offer.
Amazing option for college!
July 03, 2019by: Katelin Huber - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Overall the school is quite good. The business professors are professionals with years of experience, and the course work is challenging. They offer many opportunities to get hands on experience in the business field outside of the classroom. Campus lacks in club presence, but it is not your traditional campus. If you're looking to learn Spanish, go outside your comfort zone, and be fully immersed in a new culture, then I highly recommend this school! One of the best decisions of my life was moving to Madrid and studying here.
Madrid is my campus!
October 19, 2018by: Eleonora Colzani - ItalyProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
SLU-Madrid offers its students not only the opportunity to get an American degree in Spain, but also the opportunity to meet people from more than 60 different nationalities on campus. Moreover, Madrid is a great city for students, with affordable prices and tons of cultural and fun events. After almost 4 years here, I can't picture myself in any other university or program. No Spain No again!!
A Spaniard in the American system
October 02, 2017by: C. Rodríguez - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
As a Spaniard that always have been studying in the Spanish System of Education, I can say that the American System of Education offers a range of skills completely different but very useful for our professional career. Without any doubt, coming to SLU-Madrid is one of the best choices I could have ever made!
Culturally dynamic
July 24, 2017by: Anna Bohren - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
I enjoy SLU-Madrid because I was given the chance to immerse myself in other cultures whilst still studying "the American Way" making my experience a lot more comfortable. While the campus has many Americans, it´s easy to find foreign friends and a good sum of the students speak more than just English and Spanish.
So happy with my decision
April 04, 2017by: SLU Permanent Student - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
I love everything about this place. I came here not sure what to expect, or how long I would stay, but after one year I can't imagine myself attending university anywhere. Initially I was worried about being so far away from home but I have made great friends and have been exposed to many cultures and also learned a lot about myself living here. I love the small class sizes because I am able to have a more personalized experience and the teachers here know me by name. The staff and faculty at this University truly care about your well being and are very welcoming. I have never felt unsafe in this city and it's an amazing place to study abroad. The buildings are colourful and lined with cobblestone roads and there are so many cafes around the city to sit outside for a coffee or to do homework! For those who like exploring there a lot of museums throughout the city. It's also very easy to travel throughout Europe. There is a great social night life in Madrid and always something to do here! To anyone who is consider coming to SLU - Madrid, my advice is to do it!
SLU-Madrid
February 17, 2017by: anonymous - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Before deciding to become a permanent student at SLU-Madrid, I had never visited the school, been to Madrid, or even to Spain. I was basing my decision largely on the opportunity I perceived, as well as on the students I had emailed with questions, and the staff I´d contacted while applying and confirming my attendance. Now, having been here for almost a full year, I can say that the opportunity I thought I was taking is much greater and more valuable than I imagined, and the people are just as knowledgeable and welcoming in person. Being immersed in a new country, a new language, and a new lifestyle is more exciting, challenging, enjoyable, and most importantly educational than I could´ve hoped for. The people I have met and experiences I have had (in Madrid, in class, and while traveling) are all so unique. I know I´m making great memories, learning invaluable lessons about culture and communication, and of course working towards my degree. The people I contacted via email and phone call before coming here are just as welcoming in person, if not more so. Students, faculty, and staff are invested in you, in your story, and in your success. All the students here have done something a little out of the ordinary by choosing to attend SLU Madrid, whether that is leaving their home country, attending an American university, or both. This common thread of being a little different creates such a welcoming community. In addition to the students, I've had great professors; the faculty here is diverse, dedicated, and extremely competent in their fields. Because the school is fairly small, all my classes have allowed me to get personalized help, both in class and during office hours. Any question I have asked has been answered; my professors know who I am. Choosing to study abroad, not just for a semester but for 4 years, at SLU-Madrid has been one of the greatest decisions I have made for my present and for my future.
Living in Madrid
February 16, 2017by: Livia - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Coming to SLU Madrid has been and still is an awesome experience. I was not expecting to encounter people from so many different cultures and for them to be so open. Not only does the university offer a great learning experience but the student body itself develops it even further. I think Madrid is a very nice city to study in because of how many different things you can do here, from tapas to museums to parks it is filled with things that have made this experience abroad feel like home. In fact, I do not consider myself as studying abroad, after only 2 years I can already call Madrid my home and this is thanks to the university which promotes different learning experiences and makes you feel like part of a big family and community that is SLU. Can't wait for the next 2 years to come.
Let Madrid inspire you
February 14, 2017by: hello2 - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
When leaving the USA, I did not set any expectations. Upon my arrival to Madrid and SLU campus, my life completely changed. You are immersed within the community on school, classes and the city. Everyone is so lovely and helpful that it makes it so much easier and better. From classes, to school activities SLU Madrid campus really provides you with the tools you need to succeed, not just living abroad, but in life too.
Among the Spanish
February 14, 2017by: Isaiah - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Deciding to come to SLU-Madrid was an easy decision. The small class sizes, the ability to earn an American degree in Spain and being in the Spanish capital, Madrid, were all factors that went into the process of choosing SLU-Madrid. In my opinion, SLU-Madrid is a very unique living, social and academic experience. It's unorthodox to your traditional American university because it forces students to be culturally immersed. Madrid truly is the campus for students here; we're not like a typical U.S. school where students don't stray too far away from the comfort of their campus. Here, you'll find yourself exploring Madrid for yourself and meeting friends along the way. Living with a host family has helped me make connections, better understand the local culture and of course, acquire new words to my Spanish vocabulary. SLU-Madrid is your home-base during school hours, but Madrid will truly foster your semester, year or four-year experience. If you're jaded with American life or you want to feel that "something different," definitely consider SLU-Madrid!
Freshmen Pre-Med
February 13, 2017by: Alec Tardy - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
As a pre-med student, the course selection is not as flexible as I had hoped. Nevertheless, the staff and classes that are offered are amazing. Teacher take the time to get to know each student. Staff members remember who you are. Over all, studying at SLU Madrid has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.
The best multi-cultural experience abroad
April 14, 2016by: Anonymous - PanamaProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
I do not think there is other programs where students from over 60 nationalities have the opportunity to interact and integrate interculturally as in Saint Louis University - Madrid. The classes and professors are terrific, and the overall experience is fantastic. There are two types of students: those who visit (or study abroad) and those who are pursuing their degree. As it is a small campus, those who pursue their degrees in Madrid bond a lot, and try to help and include those who are visiting/abroad in anything they need. The campus is on a beautiful and safe neighborhood in the center of Madrid. The professors are from all over the world, greatly prepared and who help build a campus community.
Spanish Major
January 17, 2016by: Spanish MajorProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
I came to SLU Madrid as a freshman, and fell in love with it immediately. There is so much diversity and appreciation for other cultures that it creates a fun and academic learning environment for everyone.
Studying in Madrid
December 04, 2015by: 123Program: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
My time studying here has been filled with many interesting emotions. I have discovered what I am passionate about and now I know what I would like to do further on after graduating. I am a part of many clubs and organizations, therefore I do not have a lot of free time on my hands, but I enjoy being a part of these clubs. As someone that is not born and raised here, I do experience nostalgia for my home country, but SLU is one big family, so I get over that feeling easily. The academics here are at a very high level and the professors will always help you when you need it.

This is an incredible experience! Such a beautiful, sunny city with so many cultural offerings and a diverse society. The Mediterranean lifestyle is dream-like! Beyond wonderful!! Professors are super qualified and small classes allow for full attention and the full student experience. Definitely an adventure worth having!!
amazing
December 02, 2015by: rama - madridProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
My experience in SLU Madrid so far is amazing. Being a Spanish campus, we receive the American education but with a Spanish type culture. Therefore we have the best of both countries. Also, I love the fact that we have so many different cultures that come together as one.
