A Guide to Chemistry Degrees Abroad
Why Earn a Chemistry Degree Abroad
Weighing the pros and cons of getting your chemistry degree abroad can be overwhelming, but well worth the effort. The idea of going away to college in general can be challenging, so of course moving to another country might make you think long and hard, but if you have an adventurous spirit and a YOLO attitude, it just makes sense. When else will you have an opportunity to live in another country so freely?
Some students find international degree programs appealing simply because you can graduate in three years. By graduating early, you can not only jumpstart your career in chemistry, but also save money in the long run on tuition fees. Many chemistry degree programs abroad can end up being more affordable than U.S. institutions, for example, too.
Once you overcome the challenge of possibly learning a new language and acclimating to your new surroundings, you can step out of your comfort zone and seek an international network of friends. You will undoubtedly become exposed to new hobbies and interests you wouldn’t have had by studying at home. Plus, when you take a break from your studies, you can plan sightseeing adventures that you wouldn’t have had at a local university. By obtaining a chemistry degree abroad, potential employers will also take notice of your willingness to remain flexible and become more culturally aware.
Locations
International students pursuing a degree in chemistry abroad have plenty of location options to choose from. To narrow down your options, consider the whole picture. You already know you’re a chemistry geek and the periodic table is your life handbook, but when your nose isn’t in the books, how do you want to spend your free time? Obtaining a degree abroad is not only great for your resume, but also great for your soul, which makes it is equally important to go where you will be stimulated academically as well as soulfully by your surroundings and experiences.
Asia is a great place to start for students who are interested in earning a chemistry degree abroad. China, in particular, is a well known location for chemistry studies, as well as its beautiful landscapes, historic buildings, and pagodas.
Europe. Students who have already completed an undergraduate degree in chemistry and are considering seeking higher education may benefit from narrowing their degree search to Europe, especially the Netherlands or Sweden. Additionally, chemistry students interested in building a global network might want to consider earning a degree in Estonia, where universities emphasize partnerships with other universities abroad. Not to mention, Tartu is a historic gem of a city.
Australia. You can live in some of the most liveable cities in the world by earning your chemistry degree in Australia, including Perth and Melbourne. Outside the classroom, you’ll experience the mediterranean-like climate, indigenous flora and fauna, and breathtaking beaches, where you can relax and escape your studies.
Chemistry Degree Programs
Regardless if you are seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree in chemistry, there are many routes you can take to accomplish your academic goals. You should also consider looking into overall course structure, required courses, and facilities available at each university you are considering, in order to choose the chemistry degree that fits your learning style and career aspirations. For example, students who are interested in advanced chemistry topics and hands on experience might consider a chemistry degree that is structured in a way where the final year of study consists mainly of research in applied chemistry.
Undergraduate Degrees. As mentioned above, in some countries, you can earn your chemistry degree in less time, which means you’ll be able to begin your career a full year before your peers at home. This alone makes earning your undergraduate degree in chemistry abroad an attractive option!
Master’s Degree. If you already have an undergraduate degree in chemistry or another scientific field, and have the desire to further your education abroad, you can take your skills to a whole new level through a master’s degree in chemistry. Each location and university will likely present very different types of master’s degree opportunities, so hone in on your focus areas of interest and start browsing through unique options
Benefits & Challenges
One potential benefit of earning a chemistry degree abroad is the ideal classroom structure you simply can’t get at home. For example, there may be chemistry programs abroad that offer a lower student-teacher ratio, which will give you the chance to deepen your learning experience tremendously.
On the other hand, you may face the challenge of earning your degree not only in a new place, but also learning in a new language. Studying chemistry can be challenging enough without a language barrier. However, learning to communicate effectively in a new language will not only expand your studies, it will also help you immerse in your new home, help you make new friends, and grow as a person.
Determining if the overall benefits outweigh the challenges is totally up to you. If your quest for knowledge and a new chemistry degree is equal to your desire for adventure and opening your mind to new experiences, then a chemistry degree abroad will be worth all your efforts and time away from home. And at the end of the day, you can wow all your friends back home with your worldly knowledge (and maybe even your new accent). Who know, you might even surprise them with some international job offers and decide to stay a while longer!

Studying my bachelor's in Beijing was the best decision

I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.

A journey to comfort and warmth
February 07, 2023by: Emmanuel Junior Nweke - NigeriaLike the rising of the sun, slowly brings warmth to a cold day, that's how I can describe my experience at AUB. The people of Lebanon sometimes say they can be rude, but what I found out is the issue of trust, the people are rich in hospitality and once they trust you, they make you feel at home, and give you comfort and warmth. At the end, everyone would miss their time at AUB.

Attending a university in central Madrid is life changing and has many benefits, but attending an US accredited university abroad such as Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus is even better! On and off campus, everyday I experience a multicultural environment. Students are from around the world and my professors are as well. Having this diversity brings many great conversations to the table and allows all of us to learn from each other and make a connection. I have met so many people in my major that have given me a different outlook on things because of our diversity and interest to learn from each other. The campus staff are welcoming and helpful and the facilities are accommodating. I would recommend attending or studying abroad at this university because Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus has so much to offer.
Amazing option for college!
July 03, 2019by: Katelin Huber - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Overall the school is quite good. The business professors are professionals with years of experience, and the course work is challenging. They offer many opportunities to get hands on experience in the business field outside of the classroom. Campus lacks in club presence, but it is not your traditional campus. If you're looking to learn Spanish, go outside your comfort zone, and be fully immersed in a new culture, then I highly recommend this school! One of the best decisions of my life was moving to Madrid and studying here.

SLU-Madrid offers its students not only the opportunity to get an American degree in Spain, but also the opportunity to meet people from more than 60 different nationalities on campus. Moreover, Madrid is a great city for students, with affordable prices and tons of cultural and fun events. After almost 4 years here, I can't picture myself in any other university or program. No Spain No again!!
MBA from AUB
March 24, 2018by: Matt - United Arab EmiratesChoosing a business school was a major decision, and my number one goal was to position myself for an international career. I chose to focus on the Middle East & North Africa region because of its rapidly-growing population and demand for skilled talent. The MBA program at AUB's Olayan School of Business was exactly what I hoped for. As a non-business undergrad, I benefited greatly from the classes and workshops. I also had the opportunity to represent AUB at 3 business case competitions in Canada, Hong Kong, and Germany. Most importantly, I can credibly work with companies and business leaders from across MENA. Today, I'm based in Dubai and working at one of the world's top consulting firms. Anyone considering studying in this part of the world should have AUB and OSB at the top of their list.
A Spaniard in the American system
October 02, 2017by: C. Rodríguez - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
As a Spaniard that always have been studying in the Spanish System of Education, I can say that the American System of Education offers a range of skills completely different but very useful for our professional career. Without any doubt, coming to SLU-Madrid is one of the best choices I could have ever made!
Culturally dynamic
July 24, 2017by: Anna Bohren - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
I enjoy SLU-Madrid because I was given the chance to immerse myself in other cultures whilst still studying "the American Way" making my experience a lot more comfortable. While the campus has many Americans, it´s easy to find foreign friends and a good sum of the students speak more than just English and Spanish.
So happy with my decision
April 04, 2017by: SLU Permanent Student - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
I love everything about this place. I came here not sure what to expect, or how long I would stay, but after one year I can't imagine myself attending university anywhere. Initially I was worried about being so far away from home but I have made great friends and have been exposed to many cultures and also learned a lot about myself living here. I love the small class sizes because I am able to have a more personalized experience and the teachers here know me by name. The staff and faculty at this University truly care about your well being and are very welcoming. I have never felt unsafe in this city and it's an amazing place to study abroad. The buildings are colourful and lined with cobblestone roads and there are so many cafes around the city to sit outside for a coffee or to do homework! For those who like exploring there a lot of museums throughout the city. It's also very easy to travel throughout Europe. There is a great social night life in Madrid and always something to do here! To anyone who is consider coming to SLU - Madrid, my advice is to do it!
SLU-Madrid
February 17, 2017by: anonymous - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Before deciding to become a permanent student at SLU-Madrid, I had never visited the school, been to Madrid, or even to Spain. I was basing my decision largely on the opportunity I perceived, as well as on the students I had emailed with questions, and the staff I´d contacted while applying and confirming my attendance. Now, having been here for almost a full year, I can say that the opportunity I thought I was taking is much greater and more valuable than I imagined, and the people are just as knowledgeable and welcoming in person. Being immersed in a new country, a new language, and a new lifestyle is more exciting, challenging, enjoyable, and most importantly educational than I could´ve hoped for. The people I have met and experiences I have had (in Madrid, in class, and while traveling) are all so unique. I know I´m making great memories, learning invaluable lessons about culture and communication, and of course working towards my degree. The people I contacted via email and phone call before coming here are just as welcoming in person, if not more so. Students, faculty, and staff are invested in you, in your story, and in your success. All the students here have done something a little out of the ordinary by choosing to attend SLU Madrid, whether that is leaving their home country, attending an American university, or both. This common thread of being a little different creates such a welcoming community. In addition to the students, I've had great professors; the faculty here is diverse, dedicated, and extremely competent in their fields. Because the school is fairly small, all my classes have allowed me to get personalized help, both in class and during office hours. Any question I have asked has been answered; my professors know who I am. Choosing to study abroad, not just for a semester but for 4 years, at SLU-Madrid has been one of the greatest decisions I have made for my present and for my future.
Living in Madrid
February 16, 2017by: Livia - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Coming to SLU Madrid has been and still is an awesome experience. I was not expecting to encounter people from so many different cultures and for them to be so open. Not only does the university offer a great learning experience but the student body itself develops it even further. I think Madrid is a very nice city to study in because of how many different things you can do here, from tapas to museums to parks it is filled with things that have made this experience abroad feel like home. In fact, I do not consider myself as studying abroad, after only 2 years I can already call Madrid my home and this is thanks to the university which promotes different learning experiences and makes you feel like part of a big family and community that is SLU. Can't wait for the next 2 years to come.
Let Madrid inspire you
February 14, 2017by: hello2 - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
When leaving the USA, I did not set any expectations. Upon my arrival to Madrid and SLU campus, my life completely changed. You are immersed within the community on school, classes and the city. Everyone is so lovely and helpful that it makes it so much easier and better. From classes, to school activities SLU Madrid campus really provides you with the tools you need to succeed, not just living abroad, but in life too.
Among the Spanish
February 14, 2017by: Isaiah - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
Deciding to come to SLU-Madrid was an easy decision. The small class sizes, the ability to earn an American degree in Spain and being in the Spanish capital, Madrid, were all factors that went into the process of choosing SLU-Madrid. In my opinion, SLU-Madrid is a very unique living, social and academic experience. It's unorthodox to your traditional American university because it forces students to be culturally immersed. Madrid truly is the campus for students here; we're not like a typical U.S. school where students don't stray too far away from the comfort of their campus. Here, you'll find yourself exploring Madrid for yourself and meeting friends along the way. Living with a host family has helped me make connections, better understand the local culture and of course, acquire new words to my Spanish vocabulary. SLU-Madrid is your home-base during school hours, but Madrid will truly foster your semester, year or four-year experience. If you're jaded with American life or you want to feel that "something different," definitely consider SLU-Madrid!
Freshmen Pre-Med
February 13, 2017by: Alec Tardy - SpainProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
As a pre-med student, the course selection is not as flexible as I had hoped. Nevertheless, the staff and classes that are offered are amazing. Teacher take the time to get to know each student. Staff members remember who you are. Over all, studying at SLU Madrid has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.
The best multi-cultural experience abroad
April 14, 2016by: Anonymous - PanamaProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
I do not think there is other programs where students from over 60 nationalities have the opportunity to interact and integrate interculturally as in Saint Louis University - Madrid. The classes and professors are terrific, and the overall experience is fantastic. There are two types of students: those who visit (or study abroad) and those who are pursuing their degree. As it is a small campus, those who pursue their degrees in Madrid bond a lot, and try to help and include those who are visiting/abroad in anything they need. The campus is on a beautiful and safe neighborhood in the center of Madrid. The professors are from all over the world, greatly prepared and who help build a campus community.
Spanish Major
January 17, 2016by: Spanish MajorProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
I came to SLU Madrid as a freshman, and fell in love with it immediately. There is so much diversity and appreciation for other cultures that it creates a fun and academic learning environment for everyone.
Studying in Madrid
December 04, 2015by: 123Program: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
My time studying here has been filled with many interesting emotions. I have discovered what I am passionate about and now I know what I would like to do further on after graduating. I am a part of many clubs and organizations, therefore I do not have a lot of free time on my hands, but I enjoy being a part of these clubs. As someone that is not born and raised here, I do experience nostalgia for my home country, but SLU is one big family, so I get over that feeling easily. The academics here are at a very high level and the professors will always help you when you need it.
Life in Madrid
December 03, 2015by: Leo - MadridProgram: Study Abroad at Saint Louis University-Madrid Campus
This university is excellent! I have had a great time here so far, and I'm looking forward to the rest of my time here! The university faculty and staff are very helpful, and the students are fun and friendly! I would highly recommend spending as much time here as you can!
