A Guide to A Guide to Biotechnology Degrees Abroad
Why Earn Your Degree Abroad
Biotechnology is a field that takes place primarily in the laboratory, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also benefit from exploring the world beyond. Travelling to earn your biotechnology degree abroad in a different country is the opportunity to uproot from the familiarity of home, get outside your comfort zone, and try new things that will shape how you see the world and what you want out of your future career. If you’re ready for a challenge both in and outside the classroom, then go abroad for your degree in biotechnology!
Locations
Biotechnology is an industry-intensive, competitive field, so not all universities around the world will offer a degree program within the discipline. You will have no trouble, however, finding plenty of biotechnology degree programs abroad in countries that are significant global players in science and innovation. Furthermore, many smaller countries with advanced economies will also offer biotechnology degrees frequently within their university systems.
Global powerhouses like China, Germany, and the United States are all major leaders in biotechnology, and also offer some of the best academic programs in the world. Accordingly, these are a few of the most popular destinations where to earn a biotechnology degree abroad for international students.
Other popular destinations where to pursue a biotechnology degree abroad are major energy-exporting nations such as Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. A core part of biotechnology is developing new methods to maximize efficient energy usage, and studying abroad in any of these destinations will place you at the heart of important nodes of productivity.
As a disclaimer, if you intend to earn your degree abroad in biotechnology outside of the English-speaking world, then many universities will give you a language proficiency test upon enrollment to ensure that you have a basic comprehension of the local tongue. You won’t get a better opportunity to become bilingual!
Academics & Degrees
At the undergraduate level, earning your degree abroad in biotechnology will require you to take a wide range of fundamental courses in the hard sciences, along with supplemental courses within closely related subjects such as biochemistry, bioengineering, biosystems, and cellular biology. Upon obtaining your B.S. in the field, you will then be ready to move on to either entry-level positions in industry, or else directly into a graduate program.
At the graduate level, a Master’s degree abroad in biotechnology will last one or two years and require a substantial amount of independent research. You may also be required at this point to pick a focus within the field, such as agricultural, industrial, or medicinal biotechnology. Moving on to then earn a PhD abroad in biotechnology will require several more years of advanced study along this path.
Universities around the world will differ in their pre-requisites and the structure of their degree programs for international students of biotechnology, so do your research carefully to decide upon where seems like the best fit for your interests and qualifications. Many schools that offer a biotechnology degree abroad will further encourage international students to apply for an internship or other such means of supplementing their studies, as well.
Benefits & Challenges
Know the World. Earning a biotechnology degree abroad is about much more than academics; it is the opportunity to get a sense of the vast infrastructural and scientific challenges we face as a global community, while learning fundamental approaches for how to solve them.
Choose the Environment. Biotechnology works closely within local environments to develop a sound technological infrastructure which can best benefit local communities. Going abroad to earn your degree is the opportunity to choose any ecosystem you’d like to enter.
Meet the Challenge. No one said it will be easy. Living in another country and adapting to a new culture and language is a huge adjustment process, but one that will push you to become the best version of yourself.
Earning your biotechnology degree abroad is an opportunity to travel and see the world, while simultaneously devoting yourself to a worthwhile academic endeavor. If we are to use biotechnology to help us meet the challenges of the 21st century, then we likewise need our biotechnologists to work together on a global scale!

Studying my bachelor's in Beijing was the best decision
June 16, 2026by: Nina Koskinen - FinlandProgram: Bachelor's & Master's Degrees in China | Apply with GAC
I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.

Best decision ever
May 31, 2016by: Brittany - EnglandProgram: Degree Programs at the University of Westminster, London
I enjoyed my time at Westminster University. I studied in the post-graduate course Media, Campaigning and Social Change. This course exceeded my expectations. It covered everything listed on the information site plus so much more. University of Westminster is very diverse and I always met so many people from all over, studying various and interesting topics. The academic staff are very professional and know their topics well. The foundation of learning at UW is based in critical thinking. I loved how I was allowed to express my own opinions, hear others and learn from them and also and analyse an idea from all angles. I would recommend this university and this course.
