A Guide to Cooking Adventure Travel Abroad
Popular Locations
Gallo pinto, pad thai, crepes...they’re all dancing through our external thought bubbles. Where will you go for cooking adventure travel?
Thailand. Your local takeout pad thai has nothing on the fresh flavors you’ll experience when you head to the Land of Smiles. Get ready for juicy limes, piquant chillies, and more versatility with rice than you could imagine. Cooking adventure travel here often includes a stroll through local markets to pick up fresh ingredients you’ll be cooking with later on in the day.
France. France is culinary heaven whether you’re looking for savory entrees or sweet pastry delights. Join a baking class to perfect your skills and feast on macarons, croissants, and all the choux buns you can get your hands on. You can also enroll in more intensive cooking adventure tours if you’re an amateur looking to go pro.
Costa Rica. There are many reasons to visit lush Costa Rica, two of them being staple foods throughout the world’s history: coffee and chocolate. By visiting Costa Rica, you have the added bonus of being right at the source of these rainforest delights. Cooking adventures here will help you elevate your palate and discover the unique, bold flavors of each new bean!
What Else You Need to Know
Costs. Like most travel activities, cooking adventures are available at a range of price points for budget travelers, big spenders, and everyone in between. Check out FundMyTravel for an easy way to fill your piggy bank so you can start filling your stomach!
Accommodations. Half-day and day courses are very unlikely to provide accommodation as they would make up only part of a much larger trip. Longer courses lasting a few weeks or more may include accommodation, but this will of course incur a greater cost. Check course websites for details.
Visas. Travel regulations vary from country to country and are based on the passport of the visitors. Many countries offer cheap or free tourist visas but will require a student visa if you’re planning on enrolling on a more formal course. Check out GoAbroad Travel Resources for more information.
Safety. As always, keep an eye out for scammers when booking any activities. Trying to find reputable cooking adventure tours can be tough sometimes, but reading reviews online is a good start. Your hostel or hotel should also be able to recommend some companies if you’re willing to let your spontaneity take hold once your feet are on the ground.
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop
Don’t be afraid to try all the different foods in front of you! Sweet sticky rice with mango on the side is an absolute dream. And did you know choux actually means cabbage? That doesn’t sound quite as appealing as creme-filled treats, but we’ll let you be the judge! Bold flavor combinations abound, and cooking adventure travel programs often feel like the true meaning of the phrase “sugar, spice, and everything nice”. Your adventurous spirit got you this far, now let your stomach take over and embrace the new culinary delights. And who knows? You might discover a new love for escargot or come home with a craving for crickets!
Cooking adventure tours can be a great introduction to sustainable and ecologically-minded travel (especially if you’re headed over to Costa Rica!). We often don’t think about everything that it takes to get the food we eat all the way to our plates, but cooking adventures may very well show you the truth and nudge you into more green living. Visiting local farms and markets can be eye-opening experiences and show you the real impact of the food industry that you may have never realized before.

Best Trip Ever!
December 04, 2025by: Lucas Ford - United StatesProgram: Travel For Teens: Thailand Elephant Service and the Islands
My Adventure Tour to Thailand was filled with some of the richest and best memories I will ever make. I got to meet so many amazing people, both locals and friends I made on the tour. When I try and decide a favorite part, it's always impossible. From the time at the school, volunteer work with the elephants, visiting the temples, exploration of the islands, and so much more, each time a moment of the trip pops into my head, it brings a smile to my face. TFT staff did an exceptional job organizing the itinerary and engaging with the students, helping to create a fulfilling trip that will no doubt stay with me forever.

I left with more confidence in the kitchen and a real appreciation for Argentine hospitality and friendship. If you want something meaningful, hands-on, and unforgettable, Mente delivers exactly that.

An Unforgettable Adventure in Japan!
December 02, 2024by: Blasina Olowe - United StatesThis trip was unforgettable! It offered an incredible blend of cultural immersion and fun activities, making every moment meaningful. I loved exploring Tokyo’s lively streets and experiencing the peaceful beauty of Kyoto. One of the most unique parts of the trip was visiting Miyagi, where we connected with high school students and learned about their traditions. Life changing experience
November 28, 2024by: Callum BuchananProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester

The opportunities and emphasis on the 'discovery' aspect of the program
November 19, 2024by: Peter GrumanProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
Pacific Discovery was recommended to us by parents of a PD alumni (Aus/NZ) and it made a huge difference to us in our review of alternative programs. The points highlighted by the parents that appealed to us centered around personal growth, world/cultural/travel experience, great planning, and excellent guides; our student's experience was terrific in all these aspects, and we so appreciate the guidance he received during the program to help contextualize all of the amazing and mundane experiences he had on the progam. The opportunities and emphasis on the 'discovery' aspect of the program particularly for his individual development, was, for us, the main reason for selecting PD, and we couldn't be more pleased with how that purpose was achieved.
The spontaneous discoveries the group was making
November 12, 2024by: Diana GrumanProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
We loved the communication between Pacific Discovery and parents. The portal offered detailed information and forms prior to the trip. During the trip, the weekly summaries gave us a window into the activities and the spontaneous discoveries the group was making in their towns, service sites, and local hosts.
I feel like I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot about myself from stepping out of my comfort zone.
November 03, 2024by: Gemma ColeProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
The South America Gap Semester pushed me out of my comfort zone both mentally, physically, and socially. Pushing my body beyond what I thought it could do, opening up to - and being vulnerable with- a new group of people, and communicating in a different language in a place so vastly different than I’m used to, were all challenging and rewarding experiences. I feel like I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot about myself from stepping out of my comfort zone and opening myself up to new opportunities and possibilities.
Perfect trip
November 01, 2024by: Ryan Moore - United StatesProgram: Thailand Adventures and Service with Rustic Pathways

Hey Ryan! Thanks for joining us in Thailand! Beach time and contributing to conservation efforts is a great balance indeed! Hopefully you join us for another trip next year.
Best experience ever
November 01, 2024by: Jonathan Jackson - United StatesThis trip was the best experience ever. As soon as I landed, I met 2-3 other guys and we were inseprrable for the whole trip. But I do want to say that sometimes we could have had more free time to go around and see things on our own. Most of us were 16 and I think we could have more independence when we go around.
Hey Jonathan! Thanks so much for traveling with us! We're happy you connected with other people on your trip! And thanks for the feedback. We hope you know that your safety is of the utmost important to us.
Worth it!

November 01, 2024by: Lucas Jones - United StatesProgram: USA: Hawaii and New Orleans Travel with Rustic Pathways
