Daan de Kraay is from the Netherlands. He studied international tourism in Breda. He has quite some travel experiences - he traveled through Europe, mostly by camping. In addition, he went to Thailand, Namibia, Florida, Mexico, and Australia. All these different cultures and countries impressed him greatly and he finds it amazing that he has been able to see all of this. The holidays were combined with sporting activities such as hiking, climbing, snorkeling, and canoeing.

I participated in the program in the year 2016 Sep - 2017 Jan.

What inspired you to go abroad?

I wanted to see the world and explore to see how Australia looked. I've heard many many stories about this country and they were all true!

Why did you choose Nullarbor Traveller?

I choose for Nullarbor Traveller because it was an opportunity for me to get out of the busy lifestyle at home and just to relax, do your job, and enjoy Australia.

What was your favorite part about Australia?

While there is nothing to see or do in the city itself (Pt Kenny, SA), it's more the locals you meet and the coastline to experience. Fishing or diving with dolphins was amazing. The hikes in the area were so cool and all the travellers you meet on the campground is special. Everyone has a different story or background. To have that together on one table is really special.

What made your experience abroad unique?

The most unique thing is the travellers you meet, the backyard you have (Jogging towards a beach with kangaroos jumping next to you), the tours that are offered. Swimming with dolphins, tasting great wines, looking at unbelievable sceneries, and sleeping underneath the stars. Nullarbor Traveller is a special place and business.

How did local staff support you throughout your program?

The local staff helped me a lot! All the tour guides are lovely, and the boss and his wife are one of the most funny and caring people I know. There is so much passion in the business. The marketing manager is also sweet and easy to work with, so all of this made it very easy.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?

I would have bought a car, to get me around the area or travel through Australia more after the internship.

Describe a typical day in the life of your program.

A typical day in life is waking up around 8:30 a.m., get some breakfast and then start doing emails, talking to hostels and passengers, do the bookings, talk with tour guides, welcome guest to the camping site, and maybe doing some finance or social media updates.

After that you may have some great leftovers from the dinner of last night and then for this dinner it's always going to be good. You may need to welcome the tour bus on the campground, prepare the barbie and campfire, and then relax with friends from all over the world that you haven't met yet.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time?

What I enjoyed most is running in my own backyard and beach (see photo). Besides, going around with Hooky - a local I met on the camping - watching footy or fishing on the beach were my favorites.

What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?

Your room is next to the office, so your life is the business. But with such a beautiful and warm business as this, that's easy.

What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?

Get some beers for the boss and some souvenirs for his wife! And always be sweet to the tour guides and the marketing manager!

What surprised you most about Australia?

The lovely people and the real countryside. The endless roads were not so lonely but became beautiful. I think the peace and the beauty surprised me the most.

What is one thing you wish you would have known before traveling abroad in Australia?

That everything went by bus. Then I would have bought a car.

If you could take on an international adventure again, where would you go?

I want to go to Brazil and Japan! But Australia is one of the countries I want to visit as soon as possible again.

What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?

Freedom and exploring something new makes everybody happy!

Now that you're home, has your time abroad impacted your life?

Yes, it definitely did. It made me grow as a person and it made me love travelling!

Would you recommend Nullarbor Traveller to others? Why?

It's a great place to learn so much and experience a beautiful real Aussie lifestyle.

This is my third time going abroad to do an internship or work. I think that while being abroad you learn a lot about yourself and the world. You can read about things and you see a lot of things through social media these days, but experiencing and seeing a place yourself, there is just somethin...

I always enjoyed traveling and exploring new countries, which was also the main reason for choosing to study tourism.
