The initiative aims to address decades of widespread deforestation through the planting of indigenous trees, removal of alien vegetation, introduction of ecosystem processes to the locals. Project activities include mass tree planting, painting of murals, dancing and jamming around a campfire, guided hikes, and so much more. Experience what it’s like to work as a marine scientist and professional diver whilst helping with vital ocean conservation projects. During this program you’ll live and work in the greater Cape Town region and conduct underwater research in a global hotspot for marine biodiversity. You’ll join a marine field station dedicated to furthering knowledge of our oceans so as to develop effective methods of protecting marine life and ecosystems. Based in an area of unique significance for marine science, False Bay, they conduct a range of research projects to better understand marine life and identify its greatest threats. A large part of their work relies on citizen science which they use as a means of mass data collection and broadening the reach of their community engagement and awareness drives. This is where you come in. Working as part of a team of passionate, experienced marine scientists you’ll go on research dives, survey populations of marine species, monitor habitats, and help their citizen science activities & eco-tourism expeditions. Aside from helping with important research ocean conservation work, you’ll get to experience training divers and leading them on dives.

The placement is in a wildlife sanctuary in the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa. You will accompany female rangers in their work against poaching, help the team monitor the lives of animals and plants, and participate in all the tasks in the reserve. During your stay, you will join the team members of the reserve and the anti-poaching unit on their daily patrols for 5-6 days per week. Wildlife Conservation Experience (WCE) is a 21-day program divided into 3 main sections: conservation, participation, and sightseeing. Conservation: The program focuses largely on conservation, wherein students acquire in-depth knowledge through several activities. These include targeted informal lectures, external courses from professional organizations, and physical work at the Centre. Participation: WCE participants get involved in the everyday care of many animal species at the Centre – cleaning, feeding, and assisting with or observing any veterinary activities occurring during their stay. They gain specific and personal knowledge of HESC's animals and operations/work. Sightseeing: The program enables participants to put theory into practice through direct observation in the wild or at other Centres specializing in research and conservation in areas different from HESC.

Contribute to education initiatives in one of Cape Town’s vulnerable communities where local youth often grow up in high-risk environments. This project contributes toward their educational development in a safe space to encourage their full potential. Through dedicated one-on-one tutoring sessions, you’ll assist student’s literacy and numeracy skills development and conversational English. Your contributions support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. In addition, you could be managing large class sizes where teachers conduct lessons in English, which is often not the students native language. Therefore, GVI has partnered with a local primary school to help improve the overall standard and quality of English lessons. In your free time, travel around the city and coastline, or visit one of the Seven Wonders of Nature, the city’s very own, Table Mountain.

This youth development project was started to provide young people living on the streets with a safe daily drop-off center and to mediate between the youth, families, and schools. Today, it has expanded and caters to at-risk youth in the town of Knysna. It is the perfect project for those interested in social work, sports, art and music, teaching, and counseling. As a volunteer, you'll assist a team of loving childcare workers and social workers. This is a fantastic project for educators, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and individuals with an interest in these fields. The main goal is to assist in and support the daily program organized for the youth attending the center voluntarily. If you wish to join this project as part of a social work internship, we can arrange this. The center is set in one of the poorer areas of Knysna. Their daily program includes modules in life skills, art therapy, sports, numbers, literacy, reading, music, personal development, and other topics. It takes place during the South African school term and isn't available from 15th December to 15th January. A fun-based program is also available and revolves around soccer or talent shows.
