Volunteering in South Africa is becoming increasingly popular as there are so many incredible projects going on in this diverse country. With apartheid ending only in 1994, there is ample opportunity to make a difference while the country looks toward a bright future. An amazing backdrop of stunning mountains, rolling grasslands, and crescent beaches makes volunteering in South Africa truly incredible!

Is “incredible” even a strong enough word?

You’ll also be sure to meet fellow travelers from all over the world while volunteering in South Africa, making extra-curricular activities like hiking, surfing, and safaris even more spectacular. For those a bit more adventurous, shark cage diving is also an option, and best done with moral support!

South Africa volunteer projects range from animal welfare and conservation to eco-tourism and small business development. Those interested in tracking and observing endangered species, and educating others about them, will especially be interested in what these programs and projects have to offer.

Whatever you’re interested in, you’re sure to get hands-on experience volunteering in one of these brilliant, bustling, and very diverse South African cities!

Where to volunteer in South Africa

1. Cape Town

As a volunteer in South Africa, you’ll get up to amazing adventures in Cape Town.

The popular South African city of Cape Town is home to incredible sights like Table Top Mountain (which you could hike, visit via cable car, and/or potentially paraglide off of), the Cape of Good Hope, and Robben Island.

In addition to these natural highlights, there is also a hip, multicultural scene with museums, galleries, world-renowned restaurants, and colorful nightlife. There’s no better place to volunteer in South Africa!

Relax on your days off by touring the Winelands, home to acclaimed vineyards like those in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Or take a stroll through the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens followed by a concert in one of the many parks.

The volunteer programs available are just as exciting as the city itself, and include everything from surfing education to animal rescue. Volunteers in South Africa would all agree that you’ll never be bored in Cape Town!

2. Johannesburg

The city of Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, and therefore teeming with volunteer opportunities! Once home to Nelson Mandela, there is no better place to make a positive difference in Africa.

Educate yourself at the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, which demonstrate South Africa’s struggle to end segregation, then visit the many other museums and galleries which showcase South African art and culture.

You’ll also find art outside of the museums; Johannesburg’s residents are known for their creativity, and street art can be viewed all over the place (but especially the Maboneng precinct, which used to be an industrial area).

3. Hluhluwe National Reserve

Get ready to feast your eyes on one-of-a-kind animal encounters.

Located in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region, Hluhluwe National Reserve is the quintessential spot for volunteering in South Africa, especially for nature lovers! This area has the highest biodiversity in all of Africa, so you’re sure to spot some of the incredible animal and plant life that the continent has to offer.

Not only will you observe these rare (and in many cases endangered) animals, you’ll be able to assist with conservation efforts, working towards ensuring their survival. This is an incredible place to volunteer in South Africa!

Recommended Programs:

4. Durban

Not only is Durban known as “South Africa’s playground”, it’s been voted as having the highest quality of living in South Africa three years running! This place is proof that volunteering in South Africa doesn’t have to drain your bank account; Durban is not yet as touristy as other South African destinations and is quite affordable.

You’ll still be in the most biodiverse place on the continent, with ample opportunity to go on safari to see the Big 5 (lion, African leopard, rhinoceros, African elephant, and African buffalo). The landscape is just as diverse as the animal life, featuring beautiful beaches, mountain ranges, and picturesque valleys.

5. Zululand

Animal sanctuaries and wildlife encounters are a MAJOR perk of South Africa volunteering.

Located in the northwest of South Africa, Zululand is a vibrant cultural hub. Volunteering in South Africa is not complete without this incredible cultural experience where you’ll hear the Zulu language (isiZulu), view (and maybe even try on) traditional dress, and witness events like the Sangoma Khekhekhe’s Annual Snake Dance or Zulu Reed Dance, where young Zulu women dance for the current king.

In South Africa, volunteering here means you’ll also have access to some of the most renowned game reserves (Hluluwe-Imfolozi, Zululand Rhino Reserve, Ithala, Phinda, and Thanda) in the world. Zululand has an intricate and proud history, and was once a kingdom at war with the British Empire. The Zulu tribe now represents the largest population of ethnic groups in South Africa, and visitors are encouraged to learn about their rich culture and long-standing traditions.

6. Pretoria

Pretoria is the capital of South Africa and located further inland than the other major hubs of the country. That being said, it has wonderful weather year-round, a great excuse to participate in the many braais (barbecues) and to get outside to see the Jacaranda trees in bloom — their brilliant purple blossoms make for some incredible photos! Your days off from volunteering will be full of outdoor adventures and markets. Grab a friend to taste some local craft beer!

Volunteer opportunities in Pretoria include Big Game conservation programs and even a monkey rescue operation (we repeat: there’s a monkey rescue operation — so cool) but also teaching and community development programs, like sports coaching. Rugby and soccer are very popular in South Africa!

7. Port Elizabeth

You won’t regret finding projects in Port Elizabeth during your stint volunteering in South Africa.

Volunteering in South Africa is a rewarding experience with long term benefits for both you and the community you’re working in. There’s no South African city you’ll see your impact in more than Port Elizabeth; once a pretty dangerous place to be and pocketed with areas of extreme poverty, you’ll be a part of making downtown come to life and helping the community flourish. There are also opportunities to work with youth and in the healthcare system.

Port Elizabeth, like other South African cities, is also very near some major national parks and reserves, like the Addo Elephant National Park. To top it all off, you’ll be on the Sunshine Coast with access to marine conservation projects for dolphins and whales! You will most likely catch a glimpse of these and other marine life while volunteering in South Africa.
