Study Abroad in Florence, Italy

Located in the heart of Tuscany, Florence clearly stands out as a cultural, historical, and academic center in Italy. It is known as the Birthplace of the Renaissance, as many Renaissance artists and authors called this city home. Dante, Boccaccio, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and many more all helped make Florence the most important place to be during the Renaissance. With a population of roughly 380,000 people, Florence is a city vast in land area but effortlessly maintains its small-town charm. Students will find that they are able to walk to any major area in less than thirty minutes and, after a few short weeks, they'll instantly feel at home and become comfortable in their new environment. And when they're ready for a bit of adventure, Santa Maria Novella, the main train station, gives them instant access to travel around Italy and Europe.

How to Intern Abroad in Italy

Prepare for an Internship

Set goals

Setting clear goals is essential to make the most out of your internship in Italy. A few basic goals for everyone could look like:

  • Identify your interests and focus on industries or fields that excite you. Make sure it’s something you want to take time to achieve and grow in.
  • Define your objectives and be specific about what you want to achieve. Reflect on whether you want to focus on gaining hands-on experience, networking, or enhancing your resume.
  • Identify research programs and people that align with your goals. Building connections within these programs can enhance your network.

Understand the benefits

Interning in Italy can offer numerous advantages for your career and personal development. Anyone heading there can expect:

  • Cultural immersion. Experience Italy’s rich history, art, and cuisine in both personal and professional ways.
  • Professional growth. Gain practical skills and insights in a global setting, whether it’s developing hard or soft skills, a trackable project, or adding to your overall knowledge.
  • Networking with many. Build connections with professionals and like-minded peers from all over the world and Italians.

Things to know

Wherever your internship is, a few important things to know are:

  • Learn Italian. Familiarity with basic Italian can be valuable in various settings, as even simple attempts to communicate in the local language are often warmly received by locals.
  • Cultural sensitivity. Approach your experience with respect and openness to Italian social norms and cultural practices, ensuring you align with their expectations and traditions.
  • Networking. Invest time in building both personal and professional connections; these relationships can lead to mentorship and expanded career prospects in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your university offers Career Services, that’s a good place to start your search for an internship in Italy. Your next option is to check online resources, such as internship placement platforms or the organization you wish to intern at.

Paid internships in Italy are hard to come by. Organizations that do pay interns generally provide a monthly minimum stipend of 300 euros, according to current laws. Some host companies offer housing or meals as compensation.

Interns are not required to pay taxes in Italy. But you still need to get the Codice Fiscale, which is requested from the Italian government. It allows you access to certain services, such as health care and a mobile phone number.

International students and recent graduates can intern in Italy. Most placements are conducted in English, so participants don’t necessarily need fluency in Italian. But learning it helps overcome language barriers.
