3-6 Months Volunteer Programs in Uganda

I spent one month at the Nyamukino site with two of my colleagues and the rangers, conducting rapid assessments and documenting species. It was an exciting and unforgettable experience that deepened my appreciation for nature and conservation. One of the most memorable parts of my experience was conducting transect walks with my colleagues, identifying and documenting different species. The unarmed rangers were incredibly knowledgeable about the local environment, and their rich indigenous knowledge made our fieldwork even more rewarding. Their passion and commitment to conservation were truly inspiring. The experience also gave me the opportunity to encounter bird species I had previously known only from books and theory, including the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill. These moments brought my classroom knowledge to life and strengthened my passion for biodiversity conservation. The evening patrols with the unarmed rangers were special, allowing me to appreciate the aesthetic value of nature while gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting it. My sincere gratitude goes to the management of Environmental Defenders for their remarkable work, continued efforts in environmental restoration, and commitment to raising environmental awareness. I am grateful to have been part of this experience, and the memories and lessons I gained at Nyamukino will remain with me for a long time

It was incredibly an enriching experience to gain hands-on experience in conservation work from the field activities especially in the reserves that protect important landscape and biodiversity. The staffs where supportive and easy to work for time I was there...Though interms of technicality as far as conservation work is concerned, it was lacking and would love if technical qualified personnels who are knowledgeable about conservation and has understanding of biodiversity of local area to be stationed in the reserves where the field work are done to offer guidance and help in technical aspects. The pre departure communication is excellent but it's quite different once at the site and I think this could be improved by having weekly reports assignments and reports and should be followed closely.. The health can be improved in especially in the reserves where atleast a medical personnel assigned during periods of field works to provide emergency services incase of accidents..

My experience was positive, informative, and worthwhile. I appreciated the opportunity to learn new things, improve my understanding, and gain valuable knowledge that I can apply in the future. The internship provided valuable practical experience in biodiversity surveys, habitat assessment, plant identification and wildlife observation at Got Arana and Nyamukino reserves. It strengthened my fieldwork skills and improved my understanding of biodiversity conservation and environmental management. The living arrangements provided an opportunity to adapt to the field environment and develop flexibility. Although adjusting to a different routine presented some challenges, the experience contributed positively to my personal development. The internship helped me appreciate the importance of cooperation between conservation organisations and local communities. It highlighted the role of community participation in promoting environmental awareness and protecting natural resources. Safety was an important consideration during field activities, particularly in remote wildlife habitats. Access to healthcare was also a concern because medical facilities could be far from some field locations. The experience emphasized the importance of timely access to medical assistance. Security was available through the rangers. Overall, my internship at Environmental Defenders was a rewarding learning experience that enhanced my practical skills, personal development and appreciation of conservation work. It provided valuable exposure to field research and the realities of environmental management.

There is a difference between studying conservation in a classroom and experiencing it with your own hands. For me, this experience at the reserve was truly a first time for everything, and I enjoyed every bit of it. From collecting, drying, and handling seeds to working in seedbeds, learning about seed banking, and participating in tree planting and restoration, I got to experience the practical side of conservation that I had previously studied in theory. I began to appreciate the work, patience, and care that go into growing indigenous trees and restoring degraded landscapes. Wildlife monitoring was equally exciting, especially following the black-and-white colobus monkeys. Seeing animals interact in their natural habitats was fascinating and reminded me why protecting ecosystems matters. Beyond the conservation activities, living in nature was an experience I will always cherish. Waking up to the sound of birds, breathing fresh air, and being surrounded by nature brought me a kind of happiness that is difficult to describe. Every day offered something new to observe, learn, and appreciate.And for me who likes taking pictures of nature,this was it for me.My phone was filled with pictures of beautiful scenery. This experience reminded me that conservation is not just something we study,it is something we experience, practise, and commit ourselves to. I came away with new practical skills, beautiful memories, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Sometimes, you may know something in theory, but nothing compares to doing it for the first time. And for me, this was a season of firsts, growth, discovery and joy.

Coming from the busy city of London, this was a fantastic experience to open my mind, get to know a festinating culture while being able to reach out to people in need and support this honest, small charity led by Ivan. I have been able to learn a lot about the food, the way of living and about the people in Uganda thanks to BID. I was able to learn how to make bricks for the organization, plant vegetables for food supply and visit villages where vulnerable people are helped and women are empowered thanks to BID Uganda.

I am motivated, responsible, and eager to learn from every experience. I am open to feedback and always ready to improve my skills. I value teamwork, communication, and adaptability, and I aim to contribute positively to any project or organization I join while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

Traveling half way around the world to volunteer effort, time and energy on marine conservation takes trust. GoEco delivered, far exceeding any preconceived expectations and hopes we had before arriving on Naifaru. The entire team provided thorough support, training and guidance so that we could participate, contribute and perform to our utmost potential. We left with a tremendous sense of achievement, accomplishment and countless unforgettable memories.

The program was very well organized, and all questions were always addressed – whether directly related to the tasks or more general matters. I felt well supported at all times.<br><br>I especially want to highlight how valuable it is to have a local Mozambican staff member like Gércia on the team. She not only brings maritime knowledge but also shares important insights about local customs and culture – a huge asset!<br>When Jule was away for a few days with another group, Gércia took over the leadership of our group, smoothly managed any changes to the plan, and handled everything very professionally. You truly have a fantastic team, and that deserves to be appreciated!<br><br>Food & Meals<br>The food was consistently delicious – thank you, Brodie and the Tilak Lodge team!<br>However, after two weeks, I noticed that some meals repeated quite often. It would be great if AOA could give Brodie a bit more flexibility and resources to offer more variety in the menu. I'm sure with more freedom, Brodie could surprise us with even more creative and diverse meals!<br><br>Scuba Diving<br>The guides at Tofo Scuba were excellent – professional, experienced, and always supportive. Whether it was the Advanced Open Water course, ocean safaris, or fun dives, I always felt safe and in very good hands. They made every dive a great experience, and I appreciated their clear briefings, calm presence, and strong awareness of safety and the environment.<br><br>Suggestions for Improvement – Equipment<br>There is definitely room for improvement when it comes to technical equipment:<br>There are clearly not enough GoPros/underwater cameras for the volunteers.<br>The printer is currently unusable due to empty ink cartridges – and no replacements were available.<br>Coming from a technical/IT background myself, I was honestly surprised at how outdated and overused some of the devices are. One or two new laptops or computers would make a real difference and improve the workflow on site.<br><br>Final Words of Appreciation<br>I usually don’t give such detailed feedback – but Jule, Gércia, Brodie and the Tilak Lodge team, as well as Ross and the Tofo Scuba crew, all deserve a big compliment. I was a little uncertain about booking a volunteer trip with an organization I didn't have personal experience with, but wow! I'm thrilled I took a chance on GoEco. Their staff were incredibly communicative, helpful and supportive throughout the process - they patiently answered all my questions, guided me to a location that suited me and made sure I had all information I needed to ensure a wonderful trip. The Giant Tortoise Breeding Center volunteer experience in the Galapagos Islands was more than I could ever have imagined... filled with ideal balance of hard work, interesting learning, plenty of free time for diving/snorkeling/relaxation, connection with the local community and endless opportunities for Spanish practice. I felt supported by both GoEco and the IOI program. I'm already looking forward to my next GoEco travel opportunity.

I enjoyed some of the activites , but not others. The rivre walk and the walk to the koppies was 10/10. No intrenet was challenging , so 7/10. Jane , Precious , Patrick and Lucas were 10/10. I woul recommend this project to anyone who needs a detox from Social media.

I chose the Real Uganda volunteer experience because it seemed a trustworthy program that offered genuine volunteer activities, not just tokenism. The program delivered in every way. I loved living with a Ugandan family. This created a deep level of empathy and understanding for day-to-day life. I loved the groups I volunteered with. The women were so genuinely welcoming and appreciative of having a volunteer. And while my world and theirs is vastly different, my life has been enriched by spending time understanding their world and their lives. If you want to do more than just travel Uganda, I highly recommed the Real Uganda. The program is professionally run, provides great communication and Leslie is a dream to work with. A+++++

Volunteering with Murphy Charitable Foundation Uganda has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It is truly one of the best organizations to volunteer with abroad. During my time with them, I had the incredible opportunity to work closely with children and women in rural communities. The warmth, resilience, and joy of the people I met was deeply moving, and the entire experience was nothing short of amazing.

The local connections the volunteer house provides for us is amazing. I can basically go to buy clothes, having surfing class, and getting a massage with discount from those connections. It feels like we’re embraced by the local community, and it feels absolutely wonderful!

The most memorable experience for me was to have a beautiful encounter with an enormous manta ray. It circled us for more than 20 minutes on our dive and it was absolutely incredible! But that was only one out of so many amazing, memorable experiences with animals as well as people!

A Life-Changing Experience with Hope Children’s Foundation Volunteering with Hope Children’s Foundation was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I was motivated to join because I wanted to make a meaningful impact on vulnerable children, and HCF provided the perfect platform to do so. During my time there, I had the opportunity to work closely with the children, assist in educational programs, and contribute to community outreach initiatives. The staff was incredibly welcoming and supportive, making me feel like part of a family. Seeing the children grow and thrive through our efforts was deeply fulfilling. This experience has shaped me both personally and professionally, strengthening my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. I would highly recommend HCF to anyone looking for a volunteering opportunity where they can truly make a difference.

I have to say swimming with the whale sharks was one of the most amazing things I’ve done in my entire life! Everyone in the boat with the same enthusiastic energy celebrating every time we would find a whale shark and jump with them, it was a trip I’ll remember forever!
