Construction Programs—Volunteer in Guatemala!

Construction volunteers work in and around the beautiful pueblo of Antigua, Guatemala. Assist in the repair or building of community centers, playgrounds, and classrooms for schools, orphanages, and rural villages. Construction work is physically demanding and includes digging, removing dirt, carrying bricks, mixing cement, plastering, painting, cleaning, and various other activities related to construction. Work days are normally from Monday to Friday, though this may vary based on the weather, project needs, and construction schedule. At all times, volunteers are supported by Maximo Nivel’s professional Field Managers and construction projects are led by professional foremen who determine the work program. Placements are available all year round, with start dates every Monday. This program is designed to take place for as short as 1 week and up to 1 year. NOTE: This program qualifies for 3-4 university credits via our School of Record. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age or accompanied by a parent or guardian. They must present proof of background checks and medical insurance.

Giving Guatemala Program

Huge population growth and migration have strained resources all over the country. As a result, its literacy rate is among the lowest in the world and poverty is prominent. Common standards of living, poor sanitation, and even limited access to clean water are all daily challenges faced by many Guatemalans. Work side by side with the locals on addressing the needs they have identified. Our staple activity in this location is the building of a cement floor for a family. The remaining work is divided among other projects, such as: - working with children at a local community library - teaching in an After-School Enrichment program - teaching pronunciation to students and teachers who are learning to write but speak the language These can often be changed (upon arrival) after discussions with the on-site coordinator. Do not hesitate to communicate if you feel like you are doing too much or too little work; our coordinators do their very best to meet the varying abilities of our volunteers.

Volunteer in Antigua, Guatemala

Volunteer in Guatemala – Travel with Purpose Looking for a meaningful way to explore Guatemala? Volunteering is a great way to give back, gain experience, and immerse yourself in local life—all while having an unforgettable adventure. We work with amazing community projects around Antigua, and they’re always happy to welcome motivated volunteers. You can help out with activities such as teaching children, supporting local health clinics, working with animals, assisting in homes for the elderly, or even engaging in hands-on work like construction or carpentry training for local youth. Most placements ask for at least 2 weeks, and since most projects don’t speak English, you’ll need a basic level of Spanish to get started. (No worries—we can help you prep with online Spanish lessons before you arrive!) Volunteering here isn’t just about helping others—it’s a chance to grow, learn, and create real connections. If you're up for a challenge and ready to make a meaningful impact, Guatemala is waiting.

Green Building at Hero School Guatemala

Of the 97% indigenous Mayan Kaqchikel in the rural town of Comalapa, Guatemala, 57% live in poverty and 27% in extreme poverty. Residents lack access to potable water, food, shelter, and quality education. Severe environmental degradation and climate change exacerbate these challenges. A significant shift in these circumstances requires a heroic and collaborative effort. To address these issues, Long Way Home was founded in 2004. In 2008, our team of educators, builders, volunteers, and administrators established Hero School to ensure multi-generational systemic change. During the construction of the Hero School campus, our team of local builders and over 4000 volunteers transformed more than 500 tons of repurposed waste (including 30,000 used tires) into our 20-structure campus. Today, 175 primary, middle, and high school students attend Hero School, receiving instruction from 25 dedicated educators. Our pedagogy prioritizes systemic thought, critical thinking, innovation, and global citizenship, preparing our local youth to navigate complex challenges with empathy and resilience.

A life changing experience

December 13, 2025by: Irene Neal - CanadaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!

I was looking for an escape from my comfortable lifestyle at home in Canada. I wanted to share my passion helping others less fortunate than myself. I searched international volunteering programs, have volunteered in four countries in 2025, and can truly say these experiences have changed my life. How do you feel when an elderly person in a old people's home in Zambia begs you to stay with them and share stories and smiles? What happens to you when the school children in Ghana hug you so tight you lose your breath? What overtakes your mind when you introduce positive ideas to women in an impoverished village in Sri Lanka, and see them take possession of new personal empowerment? Let me tell you. It grabs you by the heart and nourishes your soul. It makes you want to come back again and again. Which is exactly what I plan to do in 2026.
