A Guide to Volunteering Abroad in Counseling
Prepare for Volunteering
Understand the benefits
Volunteering abroad can make a significant impact on both the organization you're helping and yourself. Here are some of the ways it can benefit you:
- Cultural immersion. You'll get to live and breathe a new culture, seeing daily life, traditions, and values up close. It’s a great way to expand your view of the world.
- Skill development. This will give you the chance to hone your counseling skills with hands-on experience and real challenges you might not face back home.
- Impactful contribution. Your work will address mental health issues and support those in need, making a lasting difference and offering you a deep sense of fulfillment.
Things to know
Before you pack your bags and embark on your counseling volunteer adventure, here are a few important things to keep in mind:
- Language skills - Learning the local language will enhance your ability to communicate and connect with the community, allowing you to provide more effective support and form meaningful relationships.
- Cultural sensitivity - Approach different cultures with respect and openness. Understanding local customs, traditions, and social norms will help you avoid misunderstandings and build trust with those you're assisting.
- Health and safety - Stay informed about necessary vaccinations and health precautions, and familiarize yourself with safety guidelines. Have an emergency plan, know the nearest medical facilities, and keep a list of essential contacts.
Choose a Location
Your destination sets the stage for an unforgettable counseling volunteer adventure. Consider these places to visit and make a real impact with your counseling skills:
Kenya
Kenya offers a rich cultural experience and a significant need for mental health support. Volunteers can work in community centers or schools, helping to address mental health challenges and providing much-needed counseling services.
India
India, with its diverse population and cultural heritage, provides a unique opportunity to work with a wide range of mental health issues. Volunteers often collaborate with local NGOs to support mental health initiatives and provide counseling services.
Peru
In Peru, volunteers can immerse themselves in the local culture while working in underserved communities. Opportunities often include working with children and families affected by mental health issues, providing both counseling and educational support.

WEHAF and Mt. Meru Hospital Volunteer Service
September 12, 2026by: Ray Jones - United StatesI planned a trip to Arusha, Tanzania through Medi Trip primarily for my son, who is a Pre Med student at university. Medi Trip and Pearl, in particular, did a wonderful job making the arrangements and sending excellent and relevant information relating to the volunteer assignments. My volunteer assignment was with WEHAF--Women's Encouragement HIV-AIDS Foundation. The accommodations were great. The staff at the hostel was friendly and very helpful--everything was kept very clean and orderly. Careen with Medi Trip was available and extremely helpful in showing us how to travel to our assignments from the hostel and how to get around Arusha. When I was seeking recommendations for a safari, Pearl placed me in contact with a local safari operator, and we enjoyed an amazing three day/two night safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. I also sought recommendations for a hiking trip to Mount Kilimanjaro with a locally-owned guiding service. Pearl placed me in contact with Nyange Adventures, and they took very good care of my son and I as we climbed Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route. Praise Nyange is an amazing guide and environmentalist. His farm and tree planting operations were outstanding, and his team of guides and porters second to none. My son's volunteer assignment went extremely well. He was able to work with the anesthesiologists and anesthesia techs at the hospital in the general and OBGYN operating rooms. He witnessed and assisted in numerous operations and procedures over the course of the two weeks we volunteered in Arusha. He logged over 60 volunteer hours in just 8 work days! My experience with WEHAF was equally rewarding. I assisted Thedy Lengoje, and her team at WEHAF, with providing sorely needed assistance to widows (the majority of whom are HIV positive) from the community with food supplies, mattresses, beds, gas stoves, and other items needed to alleviate their difficult circumstances. I also helped complete the parking lot and perimeter wall painting at the "Mama Center", where women in the program go to learn how to sew and obtain other skills to be able to start their own small businesses. I did not think I would be doing manual labor during my assignment, but I saw a need and was given the freedom to complete those projects while I was in Arusha. The Medi Trip staff were professional and responsive to all my inquires leading up to our assignments. Travel and housing accommodations were both timely and comfortable. I cannot recommend Medi Trip enough. I am so pleased with the time my son and I spent in Tanzania and we will remember all the people with whom we came in contact (Pearl, Careen, Kombo, etc.) fondly and forever. Jambo!

It was a experience I will remember for life
September 05, 2026by: Ziyi Pan - ChinaProgram: Volunteer in Latin America! Costa Rica, Guatemala, & Peru
As a 16-year-old traveling alone in Costa Rica, Maximo Nivel made me feel safe, supported, and welcomed throughout my entire experience. The staff and my host family gave me all the support and guidance I needed, which made being away from home so much easier. I especially loved how Maximo brings everyone together, allowing me to meet so many amazing people from different cultures, countries, and backgrounds. This has been one of the best experiences of my life so far, and as my first solo trip, I feel like I’ve grown so much as a person. I gained more confidence, independence, and a new appreciation for different cultures and perspectives. I truly don’t think I would have had this experience or grown as much without Maximo Nivel.
Working with kids in the Incan Capital
September 03, 2026by: Keelin Wittkamp - United StatesProgram: Working with Kids—Volunteer in Peru!
My experience in Peru has been absolutely amazing! Working with the kids has been such a wonderful experience, not only do I get a ton of new friends but I get to learn with them. The teachers are so wonderful and are very patient with my Spanish. The kids are the sweetest ever and are so eager to learn. I get to work with the 3 year olds and it is such a rewarding experience. I am learning so much in the classroom and the kids help me with my Spanish so much. Overall, I recommend working on this project to really feel like you are part of the community and see the culture first hand. Exploring cusco has also been so rewarding. I get to take the bus to my placement everyday which is super cool because I am with all of the locals and get to see real life peru. I am grateful to be experiencing this more as a local rather than a tourist. My host family has been super kind and makes me feel like family. I have felt extremely safe and can even walk around at night by myself with no worries. My host siblings and I have also often talked about how the food has never been bad since we´ve been here. This country is so so beautiful and I cannot wait to keep exploring all that it has to offer.

Dental Volunteering in Cusco
August 22, 2026by: Paulina Morrissey - United StatesProgram: Volunteer in Latin America! Costa Rica, Guatemala, & Peru
My experience in Cusco was such an amazing time. The people and atmosphere were amazing. Only after a short while this place and these people became a second home and family. The dental program was a great experience especially for a pre-dental student, you learn so much and meet so many great doctors, great for people who are ready for hands-on experience, learning, and giving a helping hand. I have already planned my return and can't wait to explore more of the programs that Maximo has to offer!

This experience changed my life for the best!
August 19, 2026by: Jimena Amaro Cordova - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
My internship at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects pushed me far beyond what I expected, taking me from supporting program logistics to independently running counseling sessions and managing my own client caseload within just a few months. I was trusted with real responsibility early on, from leading a group of 45 adult learners on my own to adapting a therapeutic intervention on short notice for an urgent client referral, and that trust taught me more about clinical work and resilience than I could have learned in a classroom. This experience confirmed that clinical psychology, particularly cross-cultural and community-based care, is exactly the path I want to pursue.
