Volunteer and Teach in Cambodia

The education level in Cambodia still is very low causing large amounts of poverty and unemployment. English skills are required for most jobs in Cambodia, yet not everyone has the opportunity to learn the language. Many young Cambodians looking for jobs get rejected because they speak very little or no English due to the fact that most parents simply cannot afford this type of education for their children. Our volunteers are placed in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the Cambodian provinces of Pursat and Kampong Speu. Many projects urgently need teachers who can help out with specific skills like English. Sometimes other skills, such as Computing, Mathematics or Art are also required. Volunteers will teach a whole class or small groups, working alone or alongside other teachers and volunteers, and the longer you stay the more responsibilities you receive, and often the volunteer will invest some time each day on preparing lessons carefully. Orphanage and NGO schools run throughout the year and only have holidays during the public holidays. We work with a combination of schools (Orphanage and NGO).

Ethical Volunteering in Cambodia

The Globalteer Cambodia Community Project is located in the town of Siem Reap, near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat. The program works with carefully selected independent partner projects in and around the city. Globalteer works with projects that provide free supplementary education programs, vocational training, and access to free healthcare and nutrition. We also work with projects that develop sustainable agricultural programs for their communities as well as with a specialist clean drinking water project that drills wells for some of the poorest villagers in the region and installs highly effective water filters to prevent the spread of often serious and sometimes fatal water-borne diseases. The program focuses on the poor and vulnerable, helping them and their families to establish long-term solutions to their needs through education, healthcare, nutrition, and income generation.

Volunteer as an English Teacher at our NGO for Poor Children

New Dream of Cambodian Children Organization (NDCCO) is a non-profit organization in Phneachey Village, on the outskirts of Siem Reap. NDCCO was founded in 2014 and was registered as an official NGO in 2018 with the government of Cambodia under number 2197. We provide free education, school meals, and community support to underprivileged children and families from our partner communities. We believe education is a key factor in the fight against poverty and that every child has the unalienable right to access quality basic education. NDCCO has an approach that emphasizes sustainable education. We work with the local village chief to target families in most need, offering them a place at the school. Most jobs in Siem Reap are in the hospitality services; thus, the ability to communicate in English is required to access employment. By providing free English lessons to underprivileged kids, we offer them greater employment opportunities. With the help of volunteers, we deliver lessons five days a week to over 230 kids from 6 to 17 years old.

Volunteering in Cambodia with IVHQ was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

I volunteered in Cambodia with IVHQ and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. From the beginning, IVHQ supported me every step of the way. They gave me clear info, helped me prepare everything, and answered all my questions super fast. I felt safe and ready before even arriving. When I got to Cambodia, the local team welcomed me so warmly. They really cared and made sure I was okay throughout the whole time. I worked at a school with children from difficult backgrounds and some with special needs – and I’ve rarely felt so much love in one place. I was assigned to different classes, from kindergarten to grade 4. My tasks were varied: sometimes I supported the local teachers, other times I led short lessons myself. Often there was a bit of time to prepare, but a lot of the work required improvisation and creativity – whether through games, songs or simple exercises. But don’t worry: there’s always someone around to support you, and your efforts are truly appreciated. The accommodation was simple, but it had everything I needed. I had my own private room, which was a big plus – and I’d definitely recommend the AC upgrade, especially because Cambodia can get really hot! The food was another highlight: three delicious meals a day, always fresh, local and full of flavour. Every day brought something new. Some days were tough, but I learned so much – about the world, about others, and about myself. Thank you IVHQ and thank you to the amazing team in Cambodia. I’ll never forget this time and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a real and heartwarming volunteer experience.
