This experience changed my life for the best!
August 19, 2026by: Jimena Amaro Cordova - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
My internship at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects pushed me far beyond what I expected, taking me from supporting program logistics to independently running counseling sessions and managing my own client caseload within just a few months. I was trusted with real responsibility early on, from leading a group of 45 adult learners on my own to adapting a therapeutic intervention on short notice for an urgent client referral, and that trust taught me more about clinical work and resilience than I could have learned in a classroom. This experience confirmed that clinical psychology, particularly cross-cultural and community-based care, is exactly the path I want to pursue.

My internship in Barcelona and experience with Connect-123 has been amazing! They helped place me into a biomedical research lab studying liver transplantation outcomes and I had amazing coworkers and a lovely time working there. I have gained many valuable skills here-from co-authoring a review paper to learning various types of histological and immunological analyses, which will assist me in future research I pursue. Connect-123 has been supportive and helpful every step of the way in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. These past few months have taught me important professional and personal skills, especially regarding cultural humility and adjusting to life in a new country. Overall, my experience in the research lab has strengthened my desire to pursue a career in medical and clinical research while also expanding both my academic and personal horizons. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking meaningful research and cultural experiences abroad.

A Well-Supported and Welcoming Volunteer Experience in Kisumu
March 29, 2026by: Susan Hauptshul - GermanyProgram: Volunteer to Empower HIV-Affected Women in Tailoring, Kisumu
I was looked after from the moment I arrived until the day I left, which was really reassuring, especially as it was my first time. The project was great, and we were truly valued and made to feel welcomed throughout our stay. I spent my time working within the women empowerment program and engaging with different community activities, which was a great opportunity to learn and contribute. The side trips were well organized and reasonably priced, making it easy to explore and enjoy the experience even more.
A Humbling and Eye-Opening Experience in Kenya
March 28, 2026by: Marlene Kaufman - CanadaProgram: Volunteer to Empower HIV-Affected Women in Tailoring, Kisumu
I count myself as one of the lucky people to have been born in the developed world, where systems work and many things are taken for granted. Volunteering in Kenya completely changed my perspective. It made me realize how much we have, and yet how often we still complain. This experience was not only meaningful but also deeply reflective for me. Working with the women in the program was truly special. They are humble, proud, and full of life despite the challenges they face. Even in situations where they are unsure about their next meal, they still carry genuine smiles and a strong sense of dignity. That level of resilience and positivity is something I will never forget. The organization provides a supportive environment for volunteers. The accommodation was comfortable, with reliable Wi-Fi and internet, and I always felt safe. There is also flexibility to explore the country, which made the experience even richer. I had the opportunity to travel to Maasai Mara and see the Big Five for the first time, which was unforgettable. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to experience a different way of life, learn from incredible people, and reflect on what truly matters. I continue to stay connected with the organization and support their work whenever I can.
My First International Volunteer Experience Changed My Life
March 28, 2026by: Godfrey Biller - ScotlandProgram: Volunteer to Empower HIV-Affected Women in Tailoring, Kisumu
This was my first international travel, my first long flight, my first time visiting a developing country, and my first volunteer experience abroad. Everything about this journey was new to me, and stepping out of my comfort zone turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. Volunteering with the women at Kar Geno in Kenya opened my mind in ways I never expected. I learned so much about life, resilience, and the strength of community. The experience truly sharpened my thinking and gave me a deeper understanding of the world outside my home country. It was challenging at times, but also incredibly rewarding. I would encourage anyone to take such a step at least once in their life. My time volunteering with the women in Kisumu is something I will always remember as one of my best life experiences.
A Life-Changing Experience I Will Never Forget!
March 25, 2026by: Angelica CastroVolunteering with this nonprofit organization for two weeks has truly been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. During my time working with the children, youth, and wider community, I came to realize just how blessed and fortunate I am—not because of what I have, but because of the opportunity to give, to connect, and to share meaningful moments with others. As part of our time there, my friend and I had the joy of sharing something very special to us: theater and improvisation. Back home, we work with young people through theater, and it was incredible to bring that passion to the schools we visited. We led theater and improv classes, and seeing the kids and youth fully engaged, laughing, creating, and expressing themselves was truly magical. Through these classes, we wanted to not only spark joy, but also to encourage them to dream big—to discover their passions and pursue the future they imagine for themselves. One particular school left a lasting impression on both of us, and we felt a strong calling to return. We are now planning to come back and start a library project—a space where imagination, learning, and curiosity can continue to grow. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience to anyone seeking personal growth, deeper human connection, and a new perspective on life. It will open your eyes, touch your heart, and change the way you see the world. Also, Nairobi is a vibrant and fascinating city to explore! From its rich culture and warm people to its lively streets and breathtaking surroundings, it offers an unforgettable adventure that beautifully complements the volunteering experience. I am filled with gratitude, and I cannot wait to return. #UCESCOAfrica
Interesting experience
March 25, 2026by: Greta SorrentinoI participated in the program for two weeks, supporting the women's training center in creating different types of designs. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the training center and am very proud of the progress and the learnings that were exchanged during my stay. Overall, UCESCO is a great organization to be a part of, especially due to the flexibility it offers to take part in different projects and connect with its wonderful people. I was somewhat surprised by some additional expenses I encountered during my stay; Uber rides from the accommodation to the project site seemed to be the only mode of transport, which turned out to be quite expensive. Additionally, be prepared to spend extra money if any particular materials are needed for the ideas you'd like to realize for the project. I didn't find this aspect fair, as I believe it should be included in the initial fee or mentioned in the project description. I discussed this inconvenience with the UCESCO team, and they were very responsive and immediately helpful in finding solutions to ensure that I felt listened to and understood. I highly appreciated their quick response to resolving these issues. I feel confident in recommending an experience with them, as they are constantly working to improve on every project and guarantee a better experience each time. Overall, I highly recommend the organization and its amazing team.#UCESCOAfrica
Enriching two weeks
March 25, 2026by: Masayo IshikawaI joined UCESCO for two weeks to be engaged in Women’s empowerment program in one of the slums in Nairobi. The program takes place at a training center supporting many single mothers start up their small businesses either in tailoring or hair salons. The students are all motivated to gain their better and i independent life in the future. UCESCO staff were very supportive and flexible for my idea and proposal to make my social impact meaningful. They also committed to follow up my program going forward. I truly recommend UCESCO to join and experience enriching stay in Nairobi.
Volunteering as mother and daughter
March 25, 2026by: Geraldine cervillaI spent a week in Nairobi working for UCESCO with my 15 years-old daughter. I was especially interested in women empowerment projects. I knew that this experience would have a lasting impact on her young mind, but before I left, I wasn't sure of how much we would be able to help in a short week. The reality is that even in one day, volunteers can make a difference. We come with different perspectives, and conversations with the beneficiaries of the organization are enough to brighten their day and open up their minds. I highly recommend UCESCO as an organization to volunteer with. Their passion is incredible. We always felt safe even in the middle of the slums. Our hearts are now full of emotions and our heads full of ideas to continue to help remotely.
an amazing experience at UCESCO Africa
March 25, 2026by: Kiyomi FujiokaMy son Kohshi and I had an amazing experience at #ucescoafrica and in Kibera teaching beauty school students (mostly young single moms) how to start business and elementary school kids how to play origami. Thanks to Kingsley, Edna and our Kenyan mom Joy ❤️. Kibera is known as the largest urban slum in Africa with population of 500k to over 1m living in extreme poverty. While I’m already back in Singapore, Kohshi is staying there for 2 more weeks to help clean beaches in Mombasa and build schools in Samburu. #ilovekenya #ucescoafrica
Meaningful Experience in Women Empowerment and Community Work
March 25, 2026by: Kerina Saro - EnglandProgram: Volunteer to Empower HIV-Affected Women in Tailoring, Kisumu
This is a truly wonderful organization, especially for anyone interested in learning more about women empowerment and the realities of HIV-affected communities. My time volunteering at Kar Geno was very meaningful, and I had a great experience working with the women in the program. The mothers in the project are strong, welcoming, and very determined to improve their lives, which makes the whole experience inspiring and emotional at the same time. The organization takes very good care of volunteers. Safety, health, and general wellbeing are clearly a priority, which made me feel comfortable throughout my stay. The accommodation was secure, the environment was friendly, and the internet connection was reliable, something many travelers worry about when coming to rural parts of Africa. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who wants a real, hands-on experience in community work, especially in areas related to women empowerment, HIV awareness, and grassroots development. It is not just volunteering — it is an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
A Warm and Relaxed Volunteer Experience
March 22, 2026by: Jeanne Boubal - GermanyProgram: Volunteer to Empower HIV-Affected Women in Tailoring, Kisumu
I had a wonderful experience volunteering here. The environment is friendly and welcoming, and the women are very supportive and happy to have volunteers around. Communication can sometimes require patience since not everyone speaks fluent English, but it is still easy to connect and work together. The work itself is relaxed, so you have enough time to also explore the local area. During my stay I was able to visit places like Maasai Mara, Ndere Island, Kit Mikayi, and Kakamega Rainforest. The community treats you with a lot of respect and appreciation, and you truly feel valued. It was a meaningful and enjoyable experience that I would recommend to anyone looking for a cultural and volunteer opportunity.
An Inspiring Time at the Seamstress Project in Kenya
March 22, 2026by: Bronwen Wicks - AustraliaProgram: Volunteer to Empower HIV-Affected Women in Tailoring, Kisumu
One of the most beautiful things in this program is seeing women progress from nothing to becoming confident and skilled. Many of the women join the program after facing stigma and very difficult life situations, but step by step they learn, grow, and become experts in their work. Watching this journey is like seeing a child grow from not speaking to walking and talking. Their courage, patience, and determination are truly inspiring, and the smiles on their faces show how much the program changes their lives. My time in Kisumu was unforgettable. I experienced the real life of the community, including early morning boat rides with fishermen, watching the sunrise over the lake, visiting Dunga Beach and Dunga Hill Camp, and seeing the daily life of women buying fish from the lake. These are experiences you cannot get as a tourist alone. The accommodation was very comfortable. I stayed in a shared house but had my own private room. The place was clean, safe, and had very strong internet, which made it easy to stay in touch with family at home. I felt secure and well supported during my stay. This program is a wonderful opportunity to see real change in people’s lives, and it is an experience that stays in your heart even after you leave.
Sharing IT Skills and Learning from the Community in Kenya
March 21, 2026by: Robert Cohen - United StatesProgram: Volunteer to Empower HIV-Affected Women in Tailoring, Kisumu
Volunteering with Kar Geno – Center for Hope was a very meaningful experience for me. I am Robert Cohen from Denver, Colorado, USA, an IT professional who has worked with IBM and HP. During my time in Kisumu, I worked with the women in the tailoring and entrepreneurship program, helping them learn basic computer skills and how to use online platforms like Facebook Marketplace to promote their products. The women were very welcoming, eager to learn, and highly motivated to improve their lives. Even though computer literacy is still limited, their determination to succeed is very inspiring. I also had the chance to explore Kisumu, including local neighborhoods, and I was impressed by how friendly and welcoming people are everywhere. The accommodation was comfortable, with a private room, modern kitchen, strong Wi-Fi, and good security. This experience gave me a deeper understanding of life in the community, and I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to share skills while learning from others.
