Studying TV & Media Production Abroad

TV and media production is a huge global industry that continues to gain momentum and expand in cities across the globe. Studying TV and media production abroad will give you the opportunity to explore fun and exciting new developments in the field while having the adventure of a lifetime living in a foreign country.

Why Study Abroad

Many television shows and other media programming are becoming increasingly global by nature. With advances in technology, the potential to reach across borders and play for international audiences is becoming more and more important to become truly successful in the industry. Studying television and media production abroad will be your opportunity to gain valuable educational insight into the changing landscape of the media industry, not to mention it will inspire you to reach for new heights in your own professional career.

Most cities in our modern world have local news and media programming, but not all schools will offer courses within this highly specialized major. Whether you will be able to study TV and Media production abroad in a particular location tends to depend on how prevalent the media industry is within that country,  but other factors, such as the language barrier, can be a roadblock as well.

The good news is that universities within most English speaking countries do offer TV and media production degree tracks (or majors in a similar vein), and these schools are typically very open to international students enrolling in courses too. The UK and the United States are two of the most influential countries in global media, and as such you will find some of the world’s most prestigious TV and media production study abroad programs in these countries. Canada and Australia boast a handful of reputable programs in the field as well.

Most countries in Europe also offer television and media production study abroad programs; in locations ranging from France to Germany to the Netherlands you can find highly prestigious universities with television and media studies course options.

In East Asia, particularly South Korea, Japan, China, and Singapore, there are a decent amount of TV and media production study abroad programs that welcome international students too.

Courses & Programs

There are a wide range of courses you can take under the overarching discipline of TV  and media production. From fiction to nonfiction, writing to cinematography, journalism and directing to design, there are many different skillsets required for the team effort of producing television and other media programming.

Studying television and media production abroad, your options will largely depend on what type of program you choose and what type of academic institution you choose to enroll in. If you enroll in an English speaking university then you will likely have access to the full course catalogue, meaning a potentially large diversity of media courses to pick and choose from. If you attend a smaller international school or foreign university, which does not use English as the medium of education, your options will be much more limited.

Apart from taking classes at a full time university, there are also a number of specialized TV and media study abroad programs. These programs tend to be interactive by nature, led by a single professor, and might even bounce around between different locations throughout the program. Specialized programs also are usually shorter than regular semester options (generally lasting four to eight weeks) and typically offered over the summertime.

GoAbroad Insider Tips

Studying television and media production abroad will be a fun and adventurous experience that will expose you to a blooming industry within a new cultural context. As global interconnectivity continues to grow, new forms of media are constantly being invented and reinvented, making it a very exciting time to enter the field. Wherever in the world you end up studying TV and media production abroad, you can be sure that it will be a highly educational and eye opening venture, and one of the best memories you will create during your academic career.
