USAC Costa Rica: Heredia - Latin American Studies & Ecology

I had a lot of fun and got to go on trips (apart from the program, mostly) to see a lot of awesome places during the weekends this summer. I learned a lot more Spanish and improved my speaking pace, while also being able to understand a lot more and at a much quicker listening pace as well. That is the thing I think I am most proud of is my improvements with the language. But I am glad I studied abroad because it also gave me a LOT of opportunities to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. I have grown a lot as a person even in just 2 and a half months here. The nature and wildlife here are incredible and worth seeing.

I decided to study abroad to better my Spanish skills while also immersing myself in Latin American culture. Costa Rica has done just that! My Spanish has improved so much, and I have been able to immerse myself firsthand in what I have learned in my Latin American Cultures classes back at my home university. I would totally recommend this immersion program!

Studying abroad in Heredia, Costa Rica was truly life changing. The program did a great job helping us fully immerse and experience life there. The host families are amazing and the country is beautiful.

During my time in Costa Rica, I took Spanish coursework and completed an English Language Assistantship Intern at the Universidad Nacional. I assisted two classes across 3 different days, helping give writing feedback and develop their oral communication skills. In my Spanish coursework, we focused on complex grammar skills and refining our own writing styles. The home stay was farther from the University and downtown area than I would have preferred, but the taxi/uber availability was helpful.

i learned so much while studying abroad and living in costa rica and made many friends from all over the states while there. it was definitely something that i would recommend to anyone interested in studying abroad or thinking about it! there was definitely an adjustment that had to be made and it definitely was not easy at first but i grew so much as a person and as a student and gained confidence in my spanish speaking skills that i would not have gained otherwise.

I was lucky learn so much about Latin America and Costa Rican culture during my time abroad. I made great friends and the program gave me the opportunity to go on really fun trips. I never would have had this experience if not USAC.

My experience in Costa Rica was truly life changing and I now have a second home! I would love to go back and maybe move there for good. Such a beautiful place and an amazing program that I am forever grateful for.

I studied abroad this past summer (2025) in Heredia, Costa Rica. I did the 5-week summer program and I mostly went with the intention of improving my Spanish skills and also experiencing a new culture, going on adventures, and meeting new people. This program was exactly what I was hoping for with my study abroad! I had the best time meeting new people and making memories I will never forget. The academics were amazing as well as all of the staff supporting us. I felt very comforted, as everyone was so friendly! I loved the opportunities to explore the country as well. They had a variety of trips for us to explore various places including zip lining in the cloud forest and visiting waterfalls. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend!

Highly recommend USAC! Not only am I studying currently with them in Costa Rica, but I also did a semester with them in Uruguay. Both experiences were great!! They have a lot of support systems in place and have different ways of group activities within the program and also outside so you are able to immerse into the community as much as you want.

Overall, I loved my time in Costa Rica. However, if I had the chance to do it over again, I would have probably picked a direct exchange program where I was more fully immersed in the culture/language, but there were many qualities of the USAC Heredia program that make it valuable especially for those who haven't traveled much or don't speak Spanish. Pros: The home stay!!! I loved my familia tica. The food was great, the house was always perfectly clean, and I got to go on trips with my host family. It was sad to leave and I'm still in touch with them! Opportunities to meet other local university students at UNA. Gustavo, the Spanish track IV professor, was INCREDIBLE. The bus system in Costa Rica is awesome and I got to travel almost every weekend Cons: Surrounded by other English speakers. -Classes are not very rigorous or challenging. -Not great for students who already speak Spanish conversationally. - Sometimes the program directors are a little disorganized. I'd love to see USAC allow students to enroll in classes directly at la UNA.

If you are someone who has never been outside the program or doesn’t speak Spanish, this program would probably be great for you. However, if you want full immersion you will not receive that through USAC. They don’t tell you that your classes will have zero locals which means you have to go out of your way to make local friends.

Very good, this was a very expensive program but I do not regret it at all. I met my favorite people in the world through this program and learned more than I have than in any other four month period in my life other than when I was a baby.

I had such a great time in this culture immersion. All of my professors were great and truly passionate about what they were teaching. My living situation was amazing being able to live with a host family. I had home cooked meals every night that were super tasty. My just family was awesome and we got really close. I was able to travel to new places every weekend and discover a lot of the country as well as some of Panama too. I made good friends in my program and had fun with them. I would chose Costa Rica every time.

My time in Costa Rica was definitely hard but one of the most rewarding and eye-opening experiences I have ever had the pleasure of taking part in. Not only did my fear of being a solo traveller dissipate, I now strive to travel anywhere an everywhere whether it be with friends, solo, or with new people I meet along the way. Without my solo trip to La Fortuna, I would not have learned so much about myself and I certainly would not have met some of my best friends to this day. Thank you Costa Rica for opening my heart, mind, and soul to a new way of living and looking at the world around me.

"Studying abroad is something that you will always remember." This is something that everyone says as an alumni, and quite honestly it could not be more closer to the truth. You leave the country, scared, intrigued, and excited to be able to spread your own wings and fly. You get the chance to grow as a person... to find those pieces of yourself that you never knew you even had. It can alter you to a point where you feel like you have changed and grown so much as a person. And this is exactly what it does, you have learned a new culture, a new language, and have built and created a new way of living for yourself. Maybe that is why they say that the biggest culture shock happens when you come back home. You have to step off a plane and almost go back in time, it is one of the weirdest feelings there is, and it leaves you with a sense of altered perception. No matter where you go from now on, your heart will carry those memories with you. Study abroad has left a lasting footprint on my heart and I am so glad to say that I had this opportunity of a lifetime. So if anyone ever asks me what I found whilst studying abroad, I will answer back with... "I found a home away from home."

My experience studying abroad in Heredia was life-changing and an amazing experience, both for learning in a new environment and for making friends. Staying with my host mother and getting to be immersed in the culture there gave me a new perspective on how people of other nationalities live, work, and have fun as a community. The classes I took as a biology major furthered my knowledge in ecology, and also gave me a chance to explore the diverse and unique ecosystems of Costa Rica. The other students in my program were wonderful, and we made so many memories together. Study abroad has made my life richer and given me adventure. I recommend USAC programs to everyone I meet and anyone who will listen!

Taking classes, traveling, and living in Costa Rica was the highlight of my college experience. I had never traveled outside of the United States before so I learned that there is a lot that I don’t know. Being immersed in a new culture taught me that you have to experience a place to truly know what the way of life is like there. I enhanced my Spanish skills and learned that preconceived ideas about a culture is harmful and we need to be careful about how we think about other groups and cultures because it may be unkind.

Studying abroad, like it is for many others, was one of the best experiences of my life. Even though everything didn’t get 10 stars, I met life long friends and learned so much that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Each day was valuable and brought me something new

Studying abroad in Costa Rica was a transformative experience that introduced me to the warm and welcoming Tico lifestyle. Through daily cultural immersion, I gained a deeper appreciation for Costa Rican values of community, simplicity, and joy. This experience also allowed me to reconnect with and redefine my own Latina identity, helping me feel more grounded in who I am.

Carlos and Cristina were amazing! I immediately felt welcomed and safe being a part of USAC. I made so many friends, loved my host family and learned so much from my classes and traveling around Costa Rica. I only did one summer semester but I wish I did two. Having a couple trips pre-planned as a group made it easy to feel included and bond as a group. All the professors were accommodating and understanding, giving us the best learning experience possible. I cannot say enough about how much I loved my experience.

My study abroad trip in Heredia, Costa Rica will forever be one of the best decisions I made during college. I decided to go on this trip because some of my sorority sisters went on it the previous year and couldn’t stop raving about it. On the trip, I got to immerse myself in Costa Rican culture. I met ticos (Costa Rican natives), developed better Spanish-speaking skills, and got to try all kinds of different foods. At the same time, I was also earning 7 credits towards my college transcript. The teachers were extremely patient and helpful when correcting my Spanish, and the campus is beautiful. I had to learn how to ride the bus everyday to campus, which was a meaningful experience in itself. My USAC advisors planned trips and activities for my group and I, including playing indoor soccer, roller-skating, going to the city, and exploring tropical rainforests. Overall, studying in Heredia, Costa Rica made me develop life skills and try new things that I wouldn’t have the chance to try anywhere else, making it a truly transformative experience. I recommend the Heredia, Costa Rica study abroad trip to anyone who wants to deepen their cultural understanding and have unforgettable experiences.

I arrived to my study abroad so nervous and already feeling the culture shock. After meeting the other students in the program, my nerves began to settle. The program directors were so helpful and kind to all us students. The class sizes were small so I was able to have a personalized learning environment that best suited me and my Spanish skills. I had the best time making new friends, practicing the language, and gettting to explore the beautiful country. We would take trips almost every weekend to experience every aspect of Costa Rica. I learned so much about myself and the Tico culture through this experience. I would HIGHLY recommend studying abroad with USAC.

Through classes and interactions with the city I felt I really was able to dive into the language and learn so much. My classes were diverse allowing me to learn words focusing around my major and my future. I felt extremely comfortable with the teachers and other students which gave me an environment where I could confidently make mistakes.

My time in Heredia, Costa Rica is one I will NEVER forget, and I am walking away with a whole new family thousands of miles away. The USAC staff were reliable, caring, and attentive. I never at any point felt that I didn’t have the adequate support to be safe and have an amazing. My host family went above and beyond to make me feel safe, welcome, and loved. My professors were knowledgeable and fantastic. I felt like I experienced all of the best things Costa Rica has to offer—whether that’s city life, fútbol, the ocean, or the rainforest. I am eternally grateful for this experience and everyone that made it possible!

I studied biology last summer in Heredia, Costa Rica. It is a beautiful country and Carlitos & Cristina work hard to give you everything you need to explore as much as your heart desires. My host mom was also an amazing woman who made me feel incredibly comfortable and well fee. Theres really not a good reason to let the opportunity of studying here pass, I regret nothing!

Before going to Costa Rica, I was so terrified of living with a host family, leaving my family and friends behind, and being "alone" in a new country. When I got there, I immediately made friends with the other people in my program and the USAC orientation and activities that were organized put me at ease. I had the greatest experience of my life and made friends that I still consistently communicate with. If you are scared of studying abroad, know that I was too, but I don't regret going one bit!

I loved my study abroad program in Heredia with USAC. The program director is awesome and the staff in general were super supportive and helpful. They helped the students get used to live abroad quickly and provided us with the necessary resources to be successful. I really enjoyed the program and would recommend it to anyone considering going abroad for Spanish.

“Heredia, Costa Rica, was the perfect studying abroad destination for me. It had the perfect blend of Spanish and ecology courses that provided real-world interactions outside the classroom. My housing accommodation with a host family provided me with the perfect environment to practice my Spanish, continuously try local food, and immerse myself in the culture. While Costa Rica’s diverse environment is great for the ecology courses, it also was an amazing way to spend my free time. I learned how to take advantage of the public transportation to take me all over the country and experience hiking in mountains and swimming at the most beautiful beaches. Along the journey, I had memorable interactions with locals that grew my appreciation for local culture. Costa Rica has left me feeling more independent, resourceful, and appreciative to learn about other cultures than my own.”

I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. Upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised to meet my loving, encouraging and fun host family. I don’t know how, but I couldn’t have had a better match. I had the perfect balance of care, support and independence. Through group activities and field trips I was able to get to know other students and the wonderful culture of the country. The classes were enriching and challenging in new ways and I learned more than I ever expected to learn. The time flies faster than I could’ve imagined and I am so grateful for my experience.

The program was very immersive in the local Tico culture, and the wide range of classes offered kept me academically engaged while still having time for social activities and traveling on the weekends. The program director and program assistant were always willing to help or guide us, making the students feel comfortable in their new hometown. We have weekly outings to bond as a study abroad cohort and participate in a club on campus where we can meet local students and hangout with them.

It was truly a wonderful experience that I am better off for having done. Living and studying in a different country, especially one so culturally different from my own, gave me a sense of perspective of the world, made me more mature, taught me valuable life skills, and provided a different type of academic experience that has made me a better student and mostly likely a better person. I lived with a host family in the city were my university was located, who spoke very little English (forcing me to practice my Spanish) but were very accommodating and made great efforts to ensure that I access to the things I need and to feel included in their family. USAC also did quite a bit to get the students out in the city and provide opportunities for cultural experiences, and many of the classes had a lab element that involved going to new places for practical learning and exploration.

I studied abroad in Heredia in Fall 2022 and it was the best 4 months of my life. The staff is incredible, my host family was so kind and the country as whole is so beautiful. My group was really small but we had little events in the beginning that bonded us all and I miss everyone so much now. The only category I didn’t give a 10/10 to was the academics simply because the Spanish medical terminology class I was so excited for got cancelled right before I left. I think it was because I was the only one in my group that signed up for it, but it’s not a course offered at my home university so that was super disappointing. Luckily I found the other courses to be super helpful with my Spanish and often really fun as well. The professors in this program are all very kind and fun as well. Usually super understanding and easy to get along with. I can’t even express how much I would recommend this program. The locals are also so kind. On multiple occasions I had ticos help me and strike up a convo with me which helped me practice my Spanish. The field trips/tours were sooo cool as well. Seriously best semester of my life.

My experiences, overall, was great. I met a lot of new friends and gained a few mentors as well. My teacher was beyond helpful and always available to help me out. The trips that were put together by staff were amazing and so fun. I would highly recommend studying abroad if you get the chance. It definitely helped my Spanish language skills and I gained confidence while chatting with members of the community.

I loved studying with USAC for the past 4 months. It was incredible to be studying during the week and finding hikes super close to Heredia, visiting different volcanos and so many beaches. Each new place I visited in Costa Rica complemented my Cultures of Latin America classes and the Survey of Latin American Art as well. I was able to finish my Latin American Studies minor, complete more requirements for my Spanish major and take classes to better my understanding of Spanish. Overall I had a wonderful experience that I would recommend to anyone looking for an amazing country to explore.

I am SO thankful I chose my program in Heredia, Costa Rica. I felt like this was such a great fit for me while I was adjusting to a new culture and finishing up my Spanish Major. The program director and assistant director were very helpful and made our experience as great as it absolutely could be!

This program exceeded all of my expectations. I was impressed with every part from our resident directors to our group trips as well as our professors. Our directors always had their office open if we wanted to just come in and chat, needed help planning a trip, or had any concerns about our homestay or academics. Our included trips were extremely fun, and I always learned something new. My classes contributed significantly to my Spanish fluency, and our professors really cared about us and our success.

In 4 short months abroad in Cost Rica, my life changed forever. I learned more Spanish than I ever have and I challenged my adaptability skills. It was such an amazing experience and I am grateful to have been a first generation student who pushed the boundaries in my family. Studying abroad has motivated me to travel to at least one new country every year and learn about different cultures.

My experience studying abroad in Costa Rica was life changing and easily the best era of my entire life. My host family was very accommodating and became a second family to me that I still stay in contact with. The classes were fascinating and helped me to absorb so much of the culture. My language skills increased incredibly and I feel much more proficient. The USAC team of Cristina and Carlitos were incredibly helpful and I cannot leave enough good reviews for them.

I loved traveling to a different location each weekend, especially due to having 3day weekends. One of my favorite trips I took was when I went to monteverde where I went ziplinning across mountain ranges. It was one of the best experiences in my entire life. I also enjoyed staying at different hostels while traveling and meeting new people. I greatly appreciate the time I spent there and all the great new friends and experiences I had while there. I would definitely visit again.

This was such a positive experience that I will never forget. It was the highlight of mucky college career. My host family was so warm and welcoming, and I am still in contact with them today. They made me feel at home. I also loved exploring the country, and the program advisors were so sweet and helpful in the planning of our trips. I made lasting connections and I can’t recommend this enough.

As soon as I arrived in Heredia I was greeted by the most loving host mama and grandma I could have ever ask for. I was fully welcomed and immersed into the beautiful Costa Rica lifestyle along with full time Spanish practice and wonderful food. The program directors along with all of my teachers showed love and care for each student. They were all so excited for me to be there and were passionate about this program. I adored my experience even more upon reflection with my return to the US, I can’t wait to go back some day to visit all the incredible people who helped me experience the true Pura Vida!

USAC was a good program in regards to language immersion and student support, but did not plan very many group activities or care much about our involvement in our host city. They do a great job of host family placement and care about your living situation very well. Heredia was a great city to call home. It was a city experience without having to be in the heart of San Jose. I felt very safe in Heredia. It was not too far from some amazing beach towns and I was even able to travel to Panama with the help of USAC during our spring break. USAC classes are very rigorous, so be prepared to have a lot of homework and work hard, but the best thing about this USAC program was that we never had class on Fridays, so we could take 3 day trips every weekend if we wanted to! Costa Rica overall is the most friendly and relaxed place I have visited. I loved spending my days as a beach bum when I wasn’t in Heredia for classes.

My time in Heredia was amazing! My host family, teachers, and program coordinators were all so sweet and I met some fantastic friends. I learned a lot by traveling all over the country (every single province!) and I was able to really immerse myself in the community to focus on my Spanish speaking abilities. My Spanish has improved a ton, and I'm much more confident and independent than I was before. I recommend this USAC program to anyone interested in learning about Spanish language or la cultura Tica. I'll always remember my 10 weeks in Heredia as the best summer in my life!

My study abroad program became one of those oh-my-god-PLEASE-stop-talking-about-it-we-get-it-you-lived-in-Costa-Rica type things. Studying abroad with University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) was so impactful on my life that I find some way to incorporate it into most conversations - intentional or not. My experience in Heredia, Costa Rica checked off all the cliché study abroad talking points: I met some of my best friends (95% of which I have visited since leaving), truly felt like a member of my host family, completed a meaningful internship, strengthened my confidence and independence, grew my language skills, and immersed myself in a new culture. It's easy to use all of these over-used descriptions for experiences like mine, but I could not truly encapsulate my spectacular four months studying abroad with words alone. I have an endless amount of stories to tell now. Thanks to USAC and Universidad Nacional (and my friends and host family), I grew as a student, a daughter, a friend, a translator, and a traveler. Who knew that school could be so fun? I'll talk about my study abroad program until the end of time.

The USAC program in Heredia was unforgettable! The students, the staff, and the families were all good. It was my first time out of the United States and USAC made the transition easy while still giving me great exposure to the country and its people. Costa Rica also offers so many activities outside of class and it's so easy to travel. It's a great place to go if you enjoy doing things outdoors. Pura vida!

I loved USAC from the moment I met the staff and directors at Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica. They were so welcoming and helped every student settle in and have all of the information needed for traveling, school, home-stays, safety, and more. I would study abroad with USAC again and again after the care I received from the staff, and the incredible experience. Everything was planned well for field-trips and get-togethers, the whole program was just amazing and I wouldn't have changed anything.

As an older USAC exchange student, I lived in my own, off-program accommodations with much less English-to-English interactions than my fellow program classmates. This helped my speaking skills skyrocket tremendously and gave me much more freedom to travel without supervision (or an overprotective host mom). However, it also isolated me, as I was 1) further from the campus than other students and 2) not invited to as many outings. I also had outgrown that whole "You can drink at 18 here!" craze and learned to avoid hanging with the younger students on weekends to avoid taking a mom role. That said, the freedom was great: I ran for an hour every morning, practicing my Spanish translating street signs and learning Heredia's geography. I also traveled the country alone during Semana Santa, visiting the Osa Peninsula and Puerto Viejo in one week, free to plan whatever excursion I please without waiting on anyone. Though the cultural catcalling sucked as lone woman in a Latin American country, I rarely felt unsafe, and strangers were helpful and looked out for me (especially other women I sat next to on public buses or stood beside in ticket lines). I would definitely go again, and for a younger study, this program is a great, safe place to start their traveling lives.

My time in Heredia truly changed my life. The program staff were extremely supportive in all situations, and the program took care of all the logistics and complicated details. Wonderful host families, excellent professors and classes, wonderful excursions, and great price. USAC was perfect for my first international experience and gave me the confidence to pursue more in the future, plus friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

I got to spend 4 months in Heredia, Costa Rica with USAC. It was such a fun and great experience. The staff was very supportive, helpful and friendly making sure we knew how to travel throughout the country and be safe as well. The people in the program were very welcoming and the host family was great. If there are any troubles with the host family then USAC staff is available to support the students. Great program would recommend!

My program in Heredia, Costa Rica has opened me up to a world of possibilities-literally. Before studying abroad, I had barely left the United States and although culture shock was inevitable, I find many elements of tico culture to be favorable. The people here are welcoming, friendly, most know multiple languages and are always ready to help out. The lifestyle is more relaxed and my time here has been, for the most part, stress-free. As far as USAC goes, the staff is phenomenal. We always have cultural and social activities that have helped us bond as a group, and we have a program where we are set up with tico friends, so I have been able to make many friends and exchange culture. It is very easy and cheap to travel within the country, and the USAC staff is very helpful in figuring out how to do it. The most beautiful place I have ever been was definitely Bocas del Toro, Panama which I visited through an optional tour with USAC. In this program, I feel valued and truly cared for in any way I need. My classes challenge me enough, and my fluency in Spanish has already increased tenfold. I can feel the pura vida lifestyle seeping into my own lifestyle, and know this program is opening me up to a world of possibilities for work, travel, and cultural connections, as well as teaching me to push myself and stay fearless. I could not be more thankful for the opportunity to study in "La Ciudad de Flores," Heredia, Costa Rica and even if just for a short time, share in the natural beauty of a country with a culture as rich as its landscape.

I loved my experience here. It was so rewarding going outside my comfort zone and trusting that I am on the path I should be on with the people I need. It was a magical experience and I met incredible people (locals) who I still remain in contact with to help me with my Spanish and update each other in life. I made a real family out there with the Ticos. The USAC staff and faculty were always so helpful with getting us what we needed and getting us involved with our passions. I extended my time with USAC in Costa Rica because I enjoyed it so much. It was the best time ever and I am using what I learned there in life here and I am a much more well-rounded, confident, balanced person. I learned so much it is one of those things you have to experience for yourself to truly know the impact it can have on you.

I wanted to choose a study abroad program in Latin American where I could really immerse myself in the culture. I wanted to improve my Spanish and this program has given me everything I could ever ask for. Great people, a good education system, and an amazing cultural experience. Costa Rica is full of beautiful places and a rich culture. USAC has made my time here extraordinary. It is everything I could hope for in an education abroad program. Pura Vida!

This has been the most amazing experience of my life. Costa Rica is known for the saying "pure vida", which basically means enjoy this simple, pure, amazing life. Heredia is in a great location to take a bus ride to San Jose and travel to all of the other beautiful places in the country. It is also great to go to classes at a university (UNA). I've gotten to meet many locals and participate in campus events. My host family is so kind and makes sure I have all I need and am safe. The USAC staff here is awesome and plans fun events almost every week, including soccer games and roller skating. All of the students in the program are nice. Overall, this is an amazing program.

Having to leave Heredia, Costa Rica after a semester was incredibly difficult. This "city of flowers" became like a second home to me in ways I could have never imagined. I was fortunate to study through USAC, who was helpful in arranging everything from housing to classes to extracurricular activities and providing support throughout the duration of the program. A typical day included eating breakfast with my host parents and siblings and then heading to the National University where I took classes in grammar, literature, culture and even Latin American dance. After that, I volunteered in tutoring a blind student in English, which was an incredible opportunity also given to me by the USAC program assistants. I was able to get some studying in at a local cafe and had the evenings free to play soccer, go to concerts, watch movies or just hang out with the family. Living with a host family was the best way to practice my Spanish as they invited me to family functions, and I was constantly forced to converse in the language. They took such good care of me, and again it was difficult to say goodbye. They have plans though to come visit me next summer, which I would absolutely love. Studying abroad through USAC is something I would highly recommend. It was one of the more affordable options and the staff is extremely supportive. They were available by phone any time of the day and the office was conveniently located a quick walk away. The central office staff in Reno was quick and happy to answer my questions ranging from financial aid to course selection. I never felt like a bother with my many emails and confusions. I would highly recommend studying abroad through USAC and encourage anyone considering Costa Rica to go.
