A hands-on learning-on-the-job education!

I had so much fun getting my hands dirty in the trenches of an actual archaeological dig! We split time between the classroom and in the trenches, but all of our time spent with Dr. Karavas was invaluable. While we spent a lot of time digging, there was ample time to explore Athens. I highly recommend this course because of the people and the experience it provides!

Wonderful Expierence - Voula field school 2026

I was a year-long student with CYA and joined the archaeology field school at Voula for the winter session, and I had an absolutely amazing time. The dig was both informative and fun. It was very hands-on and truly allowed me to gain the experience I was looking for in the field. Professor Karavas led the field school for us, and he was wonderful. He is very knowledgeable while also being a truly engaging and fun professor to learn from. The cohort there with me was also amazing, and we all connected quickly. In addition, Athens is an incredible city with so much to offer in terms of food, adventure, and history. You have plenty of time to explore it during the evenings and weekends. I definitely recommend CYA’s winter session. It is a blast.

Participating in the winter session was the best choice I ever made!

When I applied to study abroad at CYA my plan was only to be there for the spring term. However, as I looked into the winter offerings, I was very attracted to the Anthropology of the City course with professor Aimee Placas. The course was incredible and I'm SO glad I made that leap to take it and extend my time at CYA. The course really took a deep dive into current events in Athens and gave insight into both the culture of Athenians as well as immigrant communities and other small groups living in the city. Most if not all of our classes were spent outdoors exploring the city--and with the best professor I could ever recommend!
