A hands-on learning-on-the-job education!

I had so much fun getting my hands dirty in the trenches of an actual archaeological dig! We split time between the classroom and in the trenches, but all of our time spent with Dr. Karavas was invaluable. While we spent a lot of time digging, there was ample time to explore Athens. I highly recommend this course because of the people and the experience it provides!

Wonderful Expierence - Voula field school 2026

I was a year-long student with CYA and joined the archaeology field school at Voula for the winter session, and I had an absolutely amazing time. The dig was both informative and fun. It was very hands-on and truly allowed me to gain the experience I was looking for in the field. Professor Karavas led the field school for us, and he was wonderful. He is very knowledgeable while also being a truly engaging and fun professor to learn from. The cohort there with me was also amazing, and we all connected quickly. In addition, Athens is an incredible city with so much to offer in terms of food, adventure, and history. You have plenty of time to explore it during the evenings and weekends. I definitely recommend CYA’s winter session. It is a blast.

Participating in the winter session was the best choice I ever made!

When I applied to study abroad at CYA my plan was only to be there for the spring term. However, as I looked into the winter offerings, I was very attracted to the Anthropology of the City course with professor Aimee Placas. The course was incredible and I'm SO glad I made that leap to take it and extend my time at CYA. The course really took a deep dive into current events in Athens and gave insight into both the culture of Athenians as well as immigrant communities and other small groups living in the city. Most if not all of our classes were spent outdoors exploring the city--and with the best professor I could ever recommend!

CYA Winter 2022- Archaeology

This was truly one of the most interesting and exciting programs I have ever been on. College Year in Athens is dedicated to teaching students in a way that gets them out of the classroom and into the world around them, even in the midst of a global health crisis. This three week long winter program is a great way to familiarize oneself with the fundamentals of an archaeological excavation and meet people with similar interests. Professor Karavas is one of the most knowledgeable professors in the field and is able to draw on his experiences at his own dig site to provide students with a world-class and one of a kind experience.

Response from provider

Hi Gaetano, thanks for spending the Winter Session with us! It sounds like you were really able to connect with your coursework and interests while on-site at an archaeological excavation! We're so happy to hear that you were able to enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience with CYA!
