Volunteers in Guatemala must be at least 18 years old at the start of the placements (unless accompanied by an adult). Depending on the nature of the placement, a basic grasp of Spanish is preferred. In certain cases, it is possible to commence with only rudimentary Spanish but lessons will be a requirement. A more advanced knowledge is required for medical placements. Spanish lessons are strongly recommend for all participants.
Some experience in the field in which you are volunteering is also helpful, as is a responsible, enthusiastic, positive and compassionate attitude. Being willing to help in many areas, and being able to use one's initiative will make for a great experience for all involved.
NOTE: Travel Insurance is compulsory for all programs in Guatemala.
