What inspired you to travel abroad?

I was inspired by the desire for helping disadvantaged children from other communities who need help in education and learning.

Why did you choose Love Volunteers

I chose Love Volunteers for its easy processes in registration and clearly defined information about the whole programs, as well as continuous communication with the participant during and after completion of the program.

What was your favorite part about Turkey?

It was my first time volunteering abroad. I think that simplifying things and making it uncomplicated is a major thing to take into consideration. During my stay, I met nice teachers and students; they always sent their greetings and showed their appreciation and happiness for my presence. Even better—the language barrier was never an obstacle for them in showing their kindness!

What made your experience abroad extraordinary?

Istanbul is a great city, where you have many things to do. I was traveling alone for the first time, so it was a unique chance to discover the city.

How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?

The local team and the teaching staff in the school were very cooperative and amiable. They broke the language barrier with the children and they were always available for help.

What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?

I wish that I could have extended my stay and gotten to know the children more. I loved the environment.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.

I woke up early at 6:00 a.m. Then, I would have a shower, get dressed, and have my breakfast in a nearby coffee shop. I always used taxis to reach the school. The lessons started at 9:30 a.m. I attended the English lessons with the English teachers for the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades. We were practicing with them verbal communication and some lessons. The classes ended at 3:15 p.m. I would have my lunch with the teaching staff during recess.

What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?

I really enjoyed walking through Istanbul and visiting its attractions. There is so much to do there—you can't get bored while you are staying in this city. I liked getting together with some friends also.

What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?

I stayed in a hostel that was located in the heart of the city. Everything I could have possibly needed was available in the area.

What is one thing every future participant should know about Childcare & Development in Turkey before their program begins?

Everyone should know that volunteering in a foreign country is a challenging experience. They must work hard to simplify their speech to children. The children are trying to learn and practice English, as it is not their native language. You can always use a translator to make your ideas and thoughts more understandable to them. You should be open-minded and have the desire to help always.

Would you recommend your program to others? Why?

Absolutely, I recommend participating in this volunteer program through Love Volunteers! I was actually the first volunteer in this program.

What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?

The improvement of your self-confidence and decision-making skills, as well as meeting good people and developing new friendships.

Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?

After this journey, my desire to help children in need and to participate in another volunteering program abroad has increased. It has deepened my humanitarian feelings, and has reinforced  that we are all humans and equal.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?

Meaningful travel is the way you deal with people—it reflects your morals and upbringing. Always show people your positive traits, especially when you are abroad.

I had traveled quite a bit but I wanted to go somewhere and truly immerse myself into a different country, see a new way of life that wasn't in a book. And I wanted it to be somewhere fairly off the grid.
