South Africa
July 17, 2025by: Mallary Lalim - United StatesProgram: Volunteer and Teach in South AfricaVolunteering here was one of my top moments. It was so amazing to be welcomed by everyone with open arms and happiness. The local team was beyond amazing and helpful for ever situation. The other volunteers were amazing and so very respectful. The kitchen staff made the best food and was always making sure everyone ate and had the right food.
Go with realistic expectations and an open heart
July 17, 2025by: Anna Machacek - HungaryProgram: Volunteer in Medicine in Peru - CuscoThis program is a great opportunity if you're looking to learn more about healthcare while making a real difference. I volunteered in an elderly care facility in Cusco, and while the medical tasks were limited due to local regulations and my Spanish level, I still found the experience meaningful. I helped with feeding, general hygiene, companionship, and some light medical support like measuring physiotherapy. Be prepared for a bit of a culture shock in the beginning, especially if you don't speak much Spanish. The environment is very different from what you might be used to, and it takes a few days to settle in, but once you do, it becomes incredibly fulfilling. The Local Team provided excellent guidance and made sure we felt supported. I'd absolutely recommend the program, but with the mindset that you're there to help however you can, not to perform advanced clinical procedures. Go with an open heart and realistic expectations!
This Experience and trip to Jamaica was the ABSOLUTE BEST!
July 16, 2025by: Dana Mitchell - United StatesProgram: Teaching and School Support in Jamaica with IVHQThe guidance and preparation resources I received from IVHQ before starting my trip were invaluable. I was provided all of the information up front and walked through every single step that I needed to take in successfully moving forward through execution of my trip. The resources are there to read and ingest and the program management staff is always available within 24-hours to answer all questions one may have. The impact from my volunteering stretched me out of my comfort zone by allowing me to understand the ways others move around on a daily basis and how accepting everyone is for individuality. I gained the experience of set expectations. Here in the US where I live, expectations "waver' in some cases, but in Jamaica, there is a consistent value of "expectation or consequence" which I honor. If somone is hesitant about joining this program I would say: "Leap into something you never experienced and be prepared to learn about other cultures and thier ways of living, working, and playing!

I actually didn't start out looking for ways to either volunteer or to get abroad. It was while job searching my senior year of college when I was getting slightly depressed thinking about sitting at a desk in an office all day every day that on a whim I started looking up opportunities working with animals (my true passion). I came across a volunteer program that advertised saving baby sea turtles in Costa Rica. Having never been out of the country by myself before, but thinking it sounded like the perfect fix to my sudden onset of turning-into-an-adult-anxiety, I decided to go for it! My plan was to get it out of my system so that I could happily settle into my professional career once I got home. That completely backfired, obviously, and my trip only ignited a newfound burning need to continue to travel as much as I can!

Sustainability is fundamentally about balance. It’s about behaving in ways that enable a diverse range of stakeholders to succeed and flourish in the long-term. There are many elements to sustainable volunteering, but some of the aspects for a volunteer to consider include how transparent an organization is in terms of how they identify the projects they support, especially in relation to projects that involve children, the extent to which volunteers will be trained and supported to work with local people in a responsible way, and the ability of an organization to demonstrate the long term impact that their projects have had on supporting genuine community or environmental needs.

It was the end of my HSC and I was bitten by the travel bug. Cambodia was a place theoretically close to my heart, but I had never been there. I empathized deeply with the extreme poverty and corruption that existed there. That is what ultimately pushed me to apply.
